四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In the most southern part of our planet, there's a place that's covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的)  place on the Earth.

As the world's least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look for the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.

Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people's daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather.

Sleep is also difficult. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create "night".

Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七级以上的) winds. They can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.

What's more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.

Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists' passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

【1】 From the passage, we learn that Antarctica_______.

    A. is covered with water

    B. rains heavily from time to time

    C. has little wind most of the time

    D. has sunshine during every night for 5 months

【2】Scientists from China go to Antarctica to _______.

    A. find out ways to control water pollution

    B. research climate change and marine biology

    C. grow plants and vegetables in special condition

    D. stop the hunters from killing the marine life

【3】In order to sleep well in Antarctica, the scientists have to __________.

    A. wear more clothes to keep warm

    B. cover the windows with black plastic cloth

    C. connect research stations with ropes

    D. eat more fried and canned vegetables

【4】We can replace (替换) the underlined word ‘passion’ in the last paragraph with _____.

    A. strong love

    B. full preparation

    C. pleasant introduction

    D. amazing imagination

    【5】The passage is mainly about__________.

    A. views of Antarctica

    B. exploring(探索) Antarctica

    C. how to survive in Antarctica

    D. climate changes of Antarctica

  • 25、A secret to win

Once a 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo (柔道) though he had lost his left arm in a car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese sensei, a judo teacher. Three months later, he was still practising with the same move. So he asked, “Sensei, shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the sensei replied.

The boy kept training. Months later, the sensei took him to his first match.

Surprisingly, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match was more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient. The boy used his one move to win the match and now was in the final.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy seemed to lose the game. Being worried that the boy might get hurt, the referee (裁判) called a break. Just before the referee wanted to end the match, the sensei came to him.

“No,” the sensei said, “let him go on.” Soon after the match began, his opponent made a big mistake: he dropped his guard (防守). Suddenly, the boy won the match.

On the way home, the boy and the sensei talked about every move in each match. Then the boy gathered the courage to ask, “Sensei, how did I win the match with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First, you’ve learned one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known guard for that move is for your opponent to catch your left arm.”

【1】How many opponents did the boy face in the story?

    A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.   D. Five.

【2】Why did the boy’s last opponent lose the game?

    A. Because he failed to protect himself in time.

    B. Because he was not strong and experienced enough.

    C. Because the referee ended the match.

    D. Because he was afraid to hurt the boy.

【3】The boy could win all the matches mainly because ______.

    A. his opponents made more mistakes than he did

    B. his opponents were more impatient than he was

    C. the boy was better at guard than his opponents were

    D. the boy’s biggest weakness became his biggest strength

【4】From the passage we can infer that ______.

    A. disabled people are the best ones in learning judo

    B. one can win achievements by keeping practising

    C. it is important to find a good referee to win a match

    D. it is useless to learn too much knowledge and skills

  • 26、   What will the world of the future be like? There are plenty of people who are happy to give their opinion of what we will be doing in 2050.Here are two predictions about the world of tomorrow.

When we dream about the future, many like to think of owning a personal flying car.The advantages are obvious. This technology would allow total freedom of movement. We could fly at 480km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control. If the cars become popular, there is likely to be an air traffic jam.Another big problem is mechanical failure(  机械故障  ).What will happen if the cars stop working? These are problems we must expect if flying cars become a reality.

Three-dimensional(3D) printing is another new technology with exciting possibilities.3D printers are used to build an object with liquid plastic. They build the object layer by layer until it is complete.Car companies already use 3D printers to make life-size models of car parts, and medical companies use the technology to make man-made body parts. As we move into the future, 3D printing will revolutionize(  彻底改变  ) the way we shop, the way we manufacture products and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such equipment will be extremely expensive.

So, in the future, we might be able to fly to work or print out new shoes.Although there are some problems to solve before this will be possible, we can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer for millions of people.

1The underlined word “predictions” means in Chinese.

    A.计划 B.条件 C.预言 D.发展

2A personal flying car in the future may have problems.

    A.two B.three C.four D.five

3   build the object layer by layer until it is complete.

    A.Car companies B.Flying cars C.Body parts D.3D printers

4From the passage we can infer that the writer . about the future life with technology.

    A.doesn’t care B.feels hopeful C.feels disappointed D.really worries

5Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Environmental protection. B.The world of tomorrow.

    C.Advantages of tomorrow. D.Future plans.

  • 27、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.

At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.

Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.

Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.

The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally

left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

【1】At first, the local people helped Columbus and his men by__________.

    A. giving them food

    B. building a house for them

    C. repairing their ship

    D. providing them with a book

【2】The local people became angry because the Europeans__________.

    A. looked very different

    B. had nothing to trade

    C. were cheats and thieves

    D. wanted to take their land

【3】What did Columbus do after returning to his ship on the night of the meeting?

    A. He discussed the problem with his god.

    B. He waited for the eclipse to finish.

    C. He read about the stars and planets.

    D. He told his men what happened.

【4】What can we learn about the Europeans from the passage?

    A. They all believed in god.

    B. They never returned to Spain.

    C. They admired the local people.

    D. They caused their own problems.
