四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、It’s not easy to find a person with the qualities(品格)it takes to be a hero. I didn’t really understand the meaning of the word “hero” until my third year in the college.

If you saw her, you wouldn’t think she really looks the part, but she is stronger than Superman could ever be. Her name is Sandra Keierleber. I first met her at volleyball tryouts(选拔赛), but didn’t notice anything special at first. As the week passed, however, she showed she had more heart than anyone. She stood out because she never gave up, no matter what.

Sandra isn’t the tallest or the fastest-in fact, this was her first time playing volleyball and it showed-but that didn’t stop her. She was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. By the end of tryouts she had found a place in everyone’s heart. When the name list for new members was put up, we all waited nervously as she checked. When she stood at the door and smiled happily, all we could do was cheer.

After Sandra made the team, she worked even harder to improve her game. When she asked for help, we gladly taught her. She also became our fan, attending almost every school game and even joining us in the city games. We all like her, because she never thinks about doing things the easy way, or losing that smile. Because of her great efforts, she makes herself a true hero-and my hero, too.

  • 25、When I was a senior in college, I came home for Christmas vacation and expected a fun-filled week with my two brothers. We were so excited to be together and we volunteered to watch the store so that my mother and father could take their first day off in years. The day before my parents went to Boston, my father took me quietly aside to the little den behind the store. He took out a cigar box, opened it and showed me a little pile of newspaper articles.

    “What are they?” I asked.

Father replied seriously, “These are articles I’ve written and some letters to the editor that have been published.”

As I began to read, I saw at the bottom of each article the name Walter Chapman. “Why didn’t you tell me you’d done that?” I asked.

“Because I didn’t want your mother to know. She has always told me that since I didn’t have much education, I shouldn’t try to write. I wanted to run for some governmental office also, but she told me I shouldn’t try. I guess she was afraid she’d be shameful if I lost…”

He watched me as I read over a few of the articles and when I looked up, his big blue eyes were wet. “I guess I tried for something too big this time,” he added.

    “Did you write something else?”

“Yes, I sent some suggestions in to our church magazine on how the national nominating committee could be more fairly(公平). It’s been three months since I sent it in. I guess I tried for something too big.”

This was such a new side to my fun-loving father that I didn’t quite know what to say, so I tried, “Maybe it’ll still come.”

The next morning our parents left on the bus to the railway station where they took a train to Boston.

Early that evening I looked out the store window and saw my mother get off the bus—alone.

    “Where’s Dad?” We asked together.

    “Your father’s dead.”

She told us they had been walking through the Park Street Subway Station in the crowds of people when father had fallen to the floor. A nurse bent over him, looked up at mother and said simply, “He’s dead.” Mother had stood by father, not knowing what to do as people tripped (绊倒) over him in their rush through the subway. Mother told us the shocking tale without running a tear. We didn’t cry either and we took turns waiting on the customers.

On the morning of the funeral (葬礼), I noticed the church magazine on the table. Normally I would never have opened it, but maybe that special article might be there—and it was. In the magazine I also found a two-page letter to my father from Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr., thanking him for the campaign suggestions. I took out the box and put them in it.

I didn’t tell anyone about the box.

    a. Father received little education.

  • 26、   China will cut the number of climbers trying to climb Mount Qomolangma from the north this year as part of plans for the clean-up on the world's highest mountains. The clean-up activity will include moving away the bodies of climbers who died at more than 8,000 metres up the mountain.

The total number of climbers trying to reach the top of the world's highest mountain from the north will be controlled to less than 300. The climbing season will be controlled to spring.

Parts of Qomolangma are in China and Nepal (尼泊尔). Each year, around 60,000 climbers and guides visit the Chinese north side of the mountain, but few actually try to climb it. China has set up stations to sort (分类), recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain, which includes cans, plastic bags, tents and oxygen tanks (氧气瓶).

On the Nepalese side, mountaineering trip organizers have begun sending huge rubbish bags to climbers during the spring climbing season. They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.

Every year there are many victims on Qomolangma often in the "death area" above 8,000 metres, where the air is the thinnest. In 2017, 648 people reached the top of Qomolangma. Six people have died on the mountain that year, one of whom on the north side.

Qomolangma has become the world's highest rubbish dump (垃圾场). Meanwhile, melting (融化) ice caused by global warming is exposing (暴露) rubbish that has been left on the mountain since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful climbing 67 years ago.

B.In China, people use helicopters to take the rubbish back to the base camp.

C.China has set up stations to deal with rubbish that is left on the mountain.

D.On the Nepalese side, climbers should take rubbish back to the base camp.

A.Persons who enjoy climbing. B.Persons who work hard.

C.Persons who help climbers. D.Persons who have experienced death.

5What can we mainly learn from the last paragraph?

A.The weather in the world is getting warmer.

B.Edmund and Tenzing were famous climbers.

C.Qomolangma is now getting much cleaner.

    D.Qomolangma faces serious rubbish problems.

  • 27、   My father was German, but he worked in England. He married my mother, who was English. Her family name was Robinson, so when I was born in 1632, in England, they called me Robinson, after her.

My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job, and live a quiet, pleasant life. But I wanted adventure and an exciting life.

“I want to be a sailor and go to sea,” I told my mother and father. They were very unhappy about this.

“Please don’t go,” my father said, “You won’t be happy you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life.” And because I love him, and he was unhappy, I tried to forget about the sea.

But I couldn’t forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship and my friend said to me, “we are sailing to London tomorrow. Why don’t you come with us?”

On September 1st, 1651, I went to Hull and the next day we dialed for London. But a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous, and the ship went up and down, up and down. I was very ill, and was very afraid.

“Oh, I don’t want to die!” I cried, “I want to live! If I live, I will go home and never go to sea again!”

The next day the wind stopped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again.

“Well, Robinson,” my friend laughed, “How do you feel now? The wind wasn’t too bad.”

“What!” I cried. “It was a terrible storm.”

“Oh, that wasn’t a storm,” my friend answered, “just a little wind. Forget it, come and have a drink.”

After a few drinks with my friend, I felt better. I forgot about the danger, and decided not to go home. I didn’t want my friend and family to laugh at me!

I stayed in London for some time, but I still, wanted to go to the sea. So, when the captain of a ship asked me to go with him to Guinea in Africa, I agreed, and so I went to the sea for the second time.

It was a good ship, and everything went well at first, but I was very ill again. Then when we were near the Canary Islands, a Turkish pirate(海盗) ship came after us. They were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was a long, hard fight, but when it finished, we and the ship were prisoners. The Turkish captain and his men took us to Sallee in Morocco. They wanted to sell us as slaves(奴隶) in the market. But in the end, the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself, and took me home with him. This was a sudden and terrible change in my life. This Turkish captain was now my master.

A.Because he looked forward to getting a good job. B.Because he had no money to own a ship

C.Because he hated to live a dangerous life. D.Because he wanted to make his parents happy.
