六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Is stress from work or school making you sick? If so, you may belong to a growing number of people suffering from serious stress. Experts have called the problem the “Black Death of the 21st century.” The original Black Death is estimated (据估计) to have killed 25 million people in Europe in the 14th century. While no one expects stress to be quite that deadly, it is still a serious matter.

A recent study has shown that stress can affect our ability to go to work. Stress is now the number one reason workers stay home sick four continuous (不间断) weeks or more.

What has led to the growing stress felt in the workplace? The bad economic situation is a major reason. Record numbers of layoffs (裁员) have increased workers’ worry about losing their jobs. Layoffs have also increased the amount of work workers are expected to do. People then work longer hours, which often creates problems for them at home, causing even more stress.

According to Professor Cary Cooper, writer of over 120 books, stress often leads to changes in manner of acting. You may notice that you’re having a hard time centering around things. You may find yourself losing your temper (脾气) easily. You might even seem to have lost your sense of humor. Other stress-related problems include difficulty in sleeping, overeating or drinking in excess.

Stress must be managed by workers themselves and by the company. Workers can take steps to manage stress. They can create a suitable plan and have breaks from time to time. Bosses can help by showing workers that their opinions may be important. They can also allow workers to have some say in decisions that matter their jobs.

Everyone should work together to look for ways to cope with on-the-job stress.

1What does the article point out about the “Black Death” today?

    A. A kind of serious disease

    B. A bad social situation especially in your work place

    C. A relationship between you and your boss

    D. A lonely feeling about how you make a living

2According to the passage, if you have been home sick more than usual, that means ______.

    A. you have failed to manage your work

    B. something goes wrong with your body or mind

    C. stress may be the main cause

    D. you are expected to stay at home to improve your ability for work

3How do you notice that you have had the problem of stress?

    A. You may spend time with friends and loved ones.

    B. You are worrying about losing your job.

    C. Your boss gives you a chance to express something valuable.

    D. You are impatient with others.

4Among all of the following words, which of the two will you choose to describe paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?

When students at Olathe East High School in the US got their CPR (心肺复苏术) training this winter, 15-year-old Seth Johnson paid close attention. Two weeks after his training, Seth helped his elder sister Claire use CPR to save their dad when he had a heart attack (心脏病发作).

That day, their father Mark was in their home when he suddenly felt quite sick. Then, things got worse. Hearing their dad shouting, Claire ran in and helped Seth pull their dad off the couch and lay him flat (平的). Claire called 911 and then started CPR.

Claire put her hands on the center of her dad’s chest (胸部) and began to push hard and fast about twice per second. She pushed on his chest 30 times, then gave two rescue breaths (人工呼吸).

Claire once took the same training course Seth did at school. After about four minutes of heavy chest compressions (胸部按压), she was tired and Seth had to take over. About two minutes later, medical workers arrived. Mark spent five days in hospital, but has since fully recovered.

Recent studies have shown that CPR saves less than 20 percent of people in these kinds of situations. But experts say it’s still worth trying. And the earlier it’s given, the more successful it’s likely to be. The American Heart Association has encouraged more schools to offer CPR training. As of last year, 38 states had laws asking students to learn it.

1CPR can be used to save a person when he/she ________.

    A.has a bad headache B.has a heart attack

C.has been burned D.has trouble sleeping

    2Paragraphs 2-3 were mainly written to ________.

A.explain how to do CPR B.describe how Claire saved her father

C.show how smart Claire was D.describe the CPR training course

3What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Claire did CPR on her own to save her father. B.Claire was never trained on how to do CPR.

C.Mark got worse after getting CPR. D.The CPR saved Mark.

4How long did Mark stay in hospital?

    A.Four minutes. B.Two minutes. C.Six minutes. D.Five days.

5What can we infer from the story?

A.CPR can only be used in the early stage of a heart attack.

B.More than 80 percent of patients benefit from CPR.

C.Both Claire and Seth learned CPR at school.

D.All US schools require students to learn CPR.

  • 24、   One day, a boy had a fight with one of his classmates. He didn’t wait until school was over, and hurried home to his grandfather. He told him his story angrily. “He is really bad,” the boy said, “and I hate him.”

The grandfather said, “Let me tell you a story. When I was a boy, I, too, sometimes hated others for what they did.”

As the boy listened carefully, the grandfather went on, “There are always two tigers inside my heart. One is good and kind. He gets on well with everything around him. But the other is bad and unfriendly. Even the smallest thing will make him angry. He fights with everyone all the time, and for no reason. He can’t think carefully because he always hates others. It is difficult to live with these two tigers inside my heart. They both try to control me.”

The boy looked into his grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which tiger always controls you, Grandfather?”

The old man said slowly and seriously, “The one that I feed. I always feed the good and kind tiger, so I never hate others and seldom get angry now.”

Hello, I’m from Canada. I love reading. Good stories can let me keep away1my everyday life and take me into a different and 2colornew world.

Reading is also a good way of knowing more about other people: how they live and the3[ ri:zənz] why they do the things. Jane Austen wrote her novels in 18th-century England, 4some of the things she described are true even today. Her books are still very popular and several of them were made into5movie.

Before I came to China, I read several of Austen’s novels again and enjoyed them more than when I6oneread them. I especially enjoyed Emma. I7['bɒrəʊd] the book from a library and I could see that many people had read Emma before me. I don’t know if it’s8[truː] in China, but in Canada, there were food stains(污渍)on the book almost every page.

If you are9interest in English literature(文学), I will advise you to go to www. sparknotes.com. This website is built to help students with all their school subjects, but10is also very good for us to learn English literature.
