21、 Scientists in Britain and the United States have made a new kind of enzyme(酵素) that eats plastics (塑料). With its help, plastics can be turned into smaller parts and go away quickly. Scientists believe that, in the future, it could solve the problem of plastic pollution.
The enzyme is able to break down(分解) PET, a form of plastic. PET was first made in the 1940s and is now widely used to make plastic bottles. It can stay in the environment for many years and pollute large areas of land and water. So it has always been a headache to deal with the waste from PET and other plastics.
The researchers found it while examining the structure a natural enzyme in Japan. They found that the natural enzyme was helping to break down PET plastics. So, they decided to make small changes to the enzyme by adding some amino acids(氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme's plastic-eating abilities work faster and better.
John McGeehan, one of the lead researchers, said, "We have made an improved enzyme. It's better than the natural one. And we are trying to make more improvements to it." He went on, "the enzyme is not bad for humans or animals, and it is friendly to the environment. So we are thinking about putting it into wider use."
The team is now trying to make the enzyme break down PET in large quantities (大量的). “We’ll see that the plastic pollution may be stopped with this technology. However, there is still a long way to go," John McGeehan added.

22、 Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?
To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.
Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks (缝隙) of the stones to grow in.
Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.
What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

A.two B.three C.four D.five

23、 I live in a new town with my family. There are lots of tall buildings in the town. The streets are busy and the traffic is heavy, but the pollution is not very serious.
In our town, more than half of the buildings have fifteen to thirty floors. Most of the people live in such tall buildings, but they don't have to climb the stairs. They use lifts to go up and down.
Many restaurants, supermarkets, cinemas and theatres are in very tall buildings. They are big, bright and modern. People enjoy eating, shopping, seeing films and watching plays in them.
The streets in our town are wide, but they are still very busy because there are too many cars. Sometimes when you come to the street crossing, you have to wait for the green lights for a long time. The people in our town never put rubbish everywhere or put dirty water into the river, so you cannot see much pollution in our town. I hope you'll come to visit our town if you like.

24、Perhaps you’ve seen the English letters “WC” in your city. They show public toilets. But do
you know it is far from elegant(优雅的)English? In fact, foreigners from English-speaking countriesrarely use the letters.
Workers in our city are changing “WC” signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
“WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me,” says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become “Gents/Men” and “Ladies/Women”.
“I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs,” he says. “I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he should say: ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes he picked up include “Not Entry”, which should be “No Entry”, “Direction of Airport” should be changed to “To the Airport”. And it is “room rate”, not “room price”. And remember to “Keep off the grass”, rather than “Care of the green”.
【1】What does the writer think of the use of “WC”?
A. He doesn’t think it means water closet.
B. He doesn’t think it old-fashioned English.
C. He doesn’t think it proper for a sign.
