  • 21、   A survey (调查) in the United Kingdom asked people about life after lockdown (封城). The market research and data analytics (分析学) company You Gov asked 4,343 people about life after the lockdown ends. The company said they were surprised by the people's answers. Only nine percent of Britons want life to return to "normal" (正常状态) after the coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak is over. This means 91 percent want life to be different to how it was before the pandemic (大流行病) started. Over half of people (54%) said they hoped to change the way they live their lives. Lead researcher Professor Tom MacMillan said: "This data shows there is a real want for change, and for the nation to learn from this crisis (危机)."

Most of the people in the survey said they noticed big changes because of the lockdown. Just over half (51%) have noticed cleaner air outdoors, and 27 percent have seen more wildlife in the past month. This may encourage people to use cars less when the lockdown ends. Maybe more people will work from home. Many people (42%) said they value food more, and 38 percent said they are now cooking by themselves and not buying ready-made meals. Another change could be a stronger sense of community. Over 40 percent of people said they now talk to people who live near them. Professor (教授) MacMillan said, "People are trying new things and noticing differences at home, in their work and in communities."

1The company You Gov were ________ when they got the results of the survey.

2In the survey, ________ percent of people want life to return to normal after the pandemic is over.

351% of people in the survey notice ________ was cleaner after lockdown.

    A.water B.air C.the park D.the city

4What changes may take place after the pandemic ends according to the survey?

People use cars less. People talk to their neighbours more.

More people work from home. More people cook by themselves at home.

    A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②③④

  • 22、   There is a famous English saying “You are what you eat”, and it means what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts (专家) use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.

“When we say some people are ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps this word can help us learn more about people’s feelings and acts.” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone’s character and behavior depending on their taste.”

In one of their experiments, college students were asked questions about their character — whether, for example, they were soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.

In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.

The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.

1The underlined word “it” refers to ________.

A.the sweet food B.the eating habit

C.the American team D.the English saying

2According to the result of the experiments, sweet food makes people ________.

    A.overweight B.excited C.relaxed D.friendly

3It can be learnt from the passage that ________.

A.scientists asked college students questions about their future

B.scientists told college students not to eat sweet food

C.people with a sweet tooth are more willing to help others

D.people’s character has nothing to do with their taste

A big sandstorm hit northern China on March 15, 2021. It covered many cities with thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土).

The storm, which came from Mongolia (蒙古国), was the largest sandstorm to hit China in the past 10 years. Many flights and classes were canceled because the visibility (能见度) was lower than 500 meters.

The storm was the result of warm and dry weather in the area, together with the strong winds from Mongolia. “There has been little rainfall so far this spring and the temperature is rising. So now is a worrying time for sandstorms,” said an expert from Beijing.

In recent years, sandstorms haven’t been as common in northern China as before. The land with desertification (荒漠化) has been falling by 7,585 km2 per year in China, and the area of sandy land has been decreasing by 1,284 km2 a year. This is thanks to China’s Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP, 三北防护林工程) which started in the 1970s. Millions of trees have been planted in northern China to prevent sandstorms and protect the environment.

Besides, China has a color-graded warming system for sandstorms (as shown in the picture), with red meaning the most serious, followed by orange, yellow, blue and green. Therefore, people would have time to get prepared for the sandstorm.

【1】According to the passage, the sandstorm in March ________.

    A.covered many cities with rain

    B.came from Northern China

C.has been the biggest one since 2011

    D.improved the visibility to 500m

【2】Paragraph 3 mainly talks about the ________ of sandstorm.

    A.results

    B.causes

    C.history

    D.areas

【3】The underlined word “decreasing” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

    A.going down

    B.rising up

    C.taking up

    D.running out

【4】If the visibility in your city is 400m, a(n) ________ warning will be given out.

    A.red

    B.orange

    C.yellow

    D.blue

【5】The passage introduces TNSFP and the warning system to show ________.

A.where the serious sandstorms come from

B.why people should protect the environment

C.how to protect ourselves during sandstorms

D.what China has done to fight against sandstorms

Thirty minutes later, when the passenger’s ring for service sounded, the air hostess realized it at once. She was so busy that she forgot to give him the water. As a result, the passenger was not able to take his medicine on time. The air hostess hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused it. In the following hours on the plane, each time the air hostess passed the passenger, she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But the passenger never replied to her.

When the passenger was going to get off the plane, he asked the air hostess to hand him the passenger’s booklet (意见簿). She knew that he would write down bad words about her job, and maybe it would make her lose her job. But with a smile she handed it to him.

Off the plane, the air hostess opened the booklet and smiled because the passenger wrote, “On the flight, you asked me whether I needed help or not for twelve times. How can I refuse your twelve sincere smiles?”
