Edith Wharton was born into a rich family in 1862 in New York City, America. From 1866 to 1872, her family visited France, Italy, Germany and Spain. During her travels, young Edith studied at home instead of going to school.
Some people think Edith began writing because she found the people around her so boring. Others say she put a pen to paper when her husband became sick. Three years later, her first novel The Valley of Decision came out. Three years after that, her novel The House of Mirth (《欢乐之家》)came out.
