21、 There was a kingdom long, long ago. It was ruled by a king who loved riddles (谜语). Once a year, the king made a new riddle. He gave a prize to the person who could solve the riddle.
There was a baker who also lived in this kingdom. Everyone agreed that he baked the finest breads. The baker had almost everything he needed except for a horse. If the baker had a horse, he could sell his fine breads from one end of the kingdom to the other.
One year, the king made a new riddle that puzzled everyone. “1 will give a prize to the person who can solve my riddle,” the king said. “Anyone who wins will have the pick of one of my strongest horses.” He then drew a line down the middle of the courtyard. “Make this line shorter without erasing (清除) any part of it,” the king said.
People came from far and wide. “How can you make a line shorter without erasing any part of it?’’ the people in the crowd asked each other. Some of them tried. The dressmaker kicked dirt over the line to hide it. The farmer poured water over the line to make it disappear. None of these worked, and the people went home disappointed. Everyone was puzzled about how to solve this new riddle.
A week passed, and nobody had any new ideas. Then one day the baker came into the courtyard with a bag of flour (面粉).
“Your Majesty,” the baker said to the king, “I can make your line shorter without erasing any part of it.” Then the baker opened his bag of flour. He poured out a line of flour right next to the king’s line. The line the baker made was longer than the king’s line.
“Now, good king,” the baker smiled, “your line is shorter.”
The people were amazed. The king laughed and clapped his hands. “You have won the prize. I will give you a horse of your choice.”
The baker was excited. Now he could sell his breads from one end of the kingdom to the other.

22、Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there is too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview—if it is long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general (笼统的) idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here is how to preview.
Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing does not give you all the information. It keeps you from spending time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim(略读)—if it is short and easy. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your everyday paper.
Here is how to skim.
Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same article, but we will get a similar idea of what it is all about.
【1】How many skills are there in this passage?
A.One.
B.Two.
C.Three
D.Four.
【2】What does the underlined word “Skim” mean?
A.Reading slowly.
B.Reading loudly.
C.Reading quickly.
D.Reading carefully.
【3】According to the passage, we should not ________ when we read sports news in an everyday paper.
A.read the last two paragraphs carefully
B.get our eyes to move fast
C.sweep our eyes across each line
D.pick up only a few key words in each line
【4】What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to read fast
B.Where to read
C.When to read
D.Why we should read
23、Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, to laugh, and to do things with. There is an old saying, “Friends are God’s way of taking care of us.” But how can you find real friendship and keep it?
The American writer Sally Seamans wrote a book which tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed (种子) and take care of it to make it grow well.
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints (抱怨) and do his or her best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things cannot always go well. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.
Sally says there are three steps to being friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and tell your friend why you did this or that.
Sally’s book also advises on some small but important things like celebrating friendships — food, holding friendship parties, activities, and games. Even if you haven’t had a real friend before, you will start to think of having one. Because the book tells us that friendship is the most important thing in our life.

24、 Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So in 2007, the city began a plan to improve the s【1】.
Under the Velib plan people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or a【2】 bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t r【3】 it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are h【4】 (25kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of t【5】 in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations.
Paris is not the f【6】 city to have a project like this—not even in France, where Lyon started a “free” bicycle plan many years ago. And not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to t【7】 across the city, they won’t use a bicycle—they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle project won’t solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce(减少) air pollution levels in the atmosphere.
Everyone know about global warming and great climate changes—this is partly b【8】 there’s so much pollution in the world. The bikes might help people to lead a much h【9】 life. There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But if we don’t anything now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to r【10】, so the problems in our environment will get worse.”

My dream
Everyone may have his own dream. Someone may want to be rich, someone may want to be beautiful, and someone may want to have power. Last Monday, we had a warm discussion about this topic at the class meeting. Here are different opinions.
When thinking of these things, we realize that we are full of life and hope. All of us believe that our dreams will come true if we try our best.
