21、I’m usually sad to say goodbye to my cousins after visiting them in Australia. But last June I wasn’t. We had to change planes in the Middle East on the way back and had to stay overnight. I just couldn’t wait to get to our hotel. How exciting it was!
The first thing I noticed in the hotel was all the glass. It was really bright, so I don’t know why all the lights were on in the building! There was also loud rock music playing inside, which I loved, but my parents didn’t! There weren’t many people waiting at the reception, so we were soon in our rooms.
The garden wasn’t what I expected. “Dad”, I said, “you told me there was a pool!” He took me back into the reception area and then up in the lift to the 39th floor and out onto the top of the building. “Here it is”, he said. It was amazing! Swimming under the clouds was awesome.
I’ve stayed in some great hotels around the world, but no one was as cool as that one. I saw photographs of it before I went, but they don’t really show how large the building is. I couldn’t believe it. Everything is huge — the building, the pool, the meals which were delicious, too, by the way! There’s so much to do and see there. I hope we can go back again and stay for longer.

IT was another cold day in Colorado (美国科罗拉多州). The snow was thick. The winds were high. While most people were staying at home, sixty-three-year-old Simon Beck was walking alone in the field. What was he doing there? Was he crazy?
The answer didn’t become clear until two days later. After walking over eighty kilometers, Beck created eight snow drawings. Each of them was as large as a football field. They looked amazing!
Beck has been creating snow drawings for 17 years. It all started as a form (形式) of exercise during winter. In 2010, Beck began to share the fruits (成果) of his new hobby online. The photos of his drawings gained widespread attention (广泛的关注).
Meanwhile, Beck put more and more time into his drawings. They became not only larger but also more complex (复杂的). Beck’s largest piece to date is a four-leaf clover (苜蓿) that he made in France. It was as large as six football fields. The snow drawing took him 32 hours to finish.
Many people ask Beck if he feels sad when his drawings are blown away by the wind. Beck shakes (摇动) his head. “As long as the weather holds long enough for us to get pictures, it’s a job well done,” he says.
Beck has now created hundreds of snow drawings around the world. Many cities and towns pay him to travel to draw in the snow.

Dear Diary, June 7, 2021 I was very sad to hear what happened to Woollie yesterday. Woollie was my favorite sheep. I have a storybook about Woollie. It says when Woollie was four, he ran away from Mr. Armstrong’s farm, and it took Mr. Armstrong six years to find Woollie. But Woollie had grown so much fleece (羊毛) that he didn’t even look like a sheep. Mr. Armstrong decided to cut his fleece on TV, so everyone could see it. Daddy said this happened on the day when I was born. Woollie’s fleece weighed 27 kg and could make clothes for 20 large men. I asked Daddy if his favorite vest (背心) was made from Woollie’s fleece. Daddy said no, because Woollie’s fleece was sold to collect money for sick kids. In the storybook, Woollie was taken to see Ms. Stella Clark, the leader of our city then. They even had tea together. Daddy said Woollie was put down because he was too sick and there was no way to help him. I cried. I hope Woollie will be happy up there in heaven. |
