24、After coming to America, the use of “yes” and “no” brings me a lot of trouble, because the use in Korea (韩语) is a different from that in English. For example, if I am asked, “Haven’t you had dinner yet?” and I have not had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say “Yes, I haven’t.” But in English, I have to say, “No, I haven’t.”
Because of this, my friends often get the opposite meaning from what I want to give them. One day only a month after I came to America, I had dinner with an American student, Bob. He asked me some questions and I answered them sincerely. A few days later, I found some roommates thought that I came from North Korea. One day I stopped by Bob’s room and asked why he was spreading the wrong information. “Oh, you told me that. Don’t you remember?” he said, “When I asked you ‘You are not from North Korea, are you?’ you clearly answered, ‘Yes, of course.’ Didn’t it mean that you are from North Korea?”
The different use also causes problems between my friends and me. One weekend night, my roommate Mark brought his children into the dorm(宿舍). They made some noise while playing. I didn’t mind the noise since I was just watching TV. The next morning, I met Mark. He asked me with a smile, “Didn’t my children make noise last night? Didn’t it make you uncomfortable?” Because I did not mind the noise at all, I clearly said “Yes!” The smile suddenly disappeared from Mark’s face, and he said, “I am sorry about that. They are going right now. See you later.” I could not understand what he was sorry about, and I just said, “OK. Bye!” After a moment of thinking, I realized how stupid I was. That evening, I explained to Mark and said sorry to him. I knew he thought that I had been very rude.
Now to deal with this problem, I have set simple rules: First, take a five-second break if I am not sure of “yes” or “no”. Second, use “pardon me”, so the person may explain to me in a direct way.

26、During the past seven years, I visited a few countries that were in need of clean water. And I met some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever known.
By the time I reached my first village in Mozambique(莫桑比克), a small crowd had already gathered around the water point to meet me. These people were eager to talk about the difference clean water had made in their community.
At the front of the crowd, I met Natalia, a 15-year-old girl. Access(使用机会) to clean water had enabled her to have better health. She could spend more time in school. As a result, she had become better educated than many of her fellow villagers.
I asked Natalia’s mother what she expected of her daughter’s future. “My dream is for Natalia to become a teacher,” she said proudly. Natalia happened to overhear our conversation. And she turned around to say, “I don’t want to be just a teacher. I want to be the headteacher.”
Many people I met in Mozambique told me that water is life. Having access to clean water would immediately improve health. Healthier families would save money on hospital bills. Healthier kids would spend more time in school. Like Natalia, they would have bigger dreams as well as better opportunities.
Yet 748 million people on this planet don’t have access to clean water. Every morning, they stand in line in front of a muddy hole in the ground. They carry dirty water all the way home and serve it to the people they love most. They constantly(经常地) suffer from stomach pains.
You and I just got lucky to be born in places where we’ve never had to worry about finding clean water.

27、 The world's first hydrogen-powered(氢动力) trains have begun running in Germany last month. The new trains will run 100-kilometer trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers an hour.
A French railroad company called Alstom built two hydrogen-powered trains. Teams in Germany and France cooperated on the project, which was supported by the German government. The new train model, called the Coradia iLint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel(柴油) trains.
Compared(与…相比较) with diesel trains, the Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise. It uses a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions(排放物)are water and steam.
A single tank of hydrogen can run a Coradia iLint train for about 1,000 kilometers. This is very similar to the distance a diesel-powered train can run on with a single tank.
Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains by the year 2021. Several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France has already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be operated by 2022.
【1】What's the topic of the passage?

B. The Coradia iLint can store the extra energy in batteries.
C. The Coradia iLint is designed to run with low levels of noise.
D. All of the above.
【3】How many Coradia iLint trains in total will the Alstom have by the year 2021?
A. Two B. Fourteen C. Twelve D. Sixteen
【4】According to the passage, we can infer that __________.
A. Alstom is the name of hydrogen-powered(氢动力) train.
B. The project was supported by the French government.
C. A diesel-powered train can run about 1,000 kilometers with a single tank.
D. Only one European country has interest in developing hydrogen train systems.
28、 More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, teaching tools like iPads are used in a lot of courses, i【1】 language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially h【2】 to the students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (like listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay some attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are s【3】 in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait till I get home,” a student explained.
But many adults c【4】 that technologies like iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have f【5】 chances to have face-to-face communication with others.
However, technologies are a【6】 a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make c【7】 with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
