  • 23、Next time you' re in a public place, take a look around you, and see how many people are using their phones.  【1】

In fact, I' m an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time on their phones.

For example, I recently visited London and traveled on the subway while I was there.  2  Being underground it is difficult to get any signal (信号) and people couldn't use the Internet. They were playing games, reading articles or listening to music on their phones.  3

Recently, my smart phone broke and I had it repaired. So I had to use a really old phone.  4  And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn' t mind not getting updates (更新) on what my friends were doing. It allowed me to enjoy my time in London more and I could watch the people around me and really see what was going on.

5  Perhaps I should just continue to use the old phone and forget I ever got my smart phone back...

    根据材料,将A—E五个句子还原到文中空白处,使短文完整、通顺,并将其标号填写在下面题号后的横线上。

    A. All I could do on this phone was to send text messages, make calls and play one game.

    B. But I am sure that as soon as they came out from the subway station they would start calling or checking their e-mails.

    C. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half.

    D. Usually some people were asleep, and nearly everybody else was using their phones.

    E. However, I knew that as soon as I got my smart phone back I would be one of those people once again.

  • 25、Frog

It was a poor village in India. One day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people who liked to eat frogs’ legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. They reached an agreement and people sent their children into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the frogs and give them the money. For the first time, the people could dream of a better future, but the dream didn’t last long.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. It was more worrying that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided to use the money to buy pesticides and medicine. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people found out that it was the frog which was not useless. They had been doing an important job- eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing (增加) more quickly. They were eating the crops and spreading diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

A.It was easy to make money by selling frogs.

B.They needed money to buy medicine.

【3】The underlined word “ pesticides” means something that can ________.

    A.cure sick people

    B.help plants grow

  • 27、Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Something shows that windmills(风车)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.

For many centuries, people used windmills to make wheat into flour(面粉) or get water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in faraway areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were hardly used.

During the 1970s, people started becoming more cared about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would run out one day. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.

【1】 From the first paragraph, what can we know about wind and windmills?

    A. Wind is the cleanest, richest and newest power source.

    B. Windmills were first introduced to Middle East during 1100s.

    C. Windmills were used in ancient Iran in the 7th Century BC.

    D. Armies used windmills in Europe and the Middle East.

2What did people use windmills to do for many centuries?

    A. To help make flour from wheat.

    B. To help get water from the river.

    C. To help make electric lights.

    D. To help dig wells in faraway areas.

3When were the windmills used to produce electricity in some places?

    A. In the 1100s.   B. In the 1940s.

    C. In the 1970s.   D. In the 1800s

4Why was wind rediscovered during the 1970s?

    A. Because coal and gas had been used up.

    B. Because it was cheaper to produce electricity.

    C. Because it’s cleaner than other sources.

    D. Because it could only be used in faraway areas.

5What was the correct order for the passage ?

    a. windmills were used in ancient Iran.

    b. people used windmills to produce electricity

    c. people used windmills to make flour.

    d. windmills were hardly used.

    A. a-b-c-d B. a-c-b-d

    C. d-a-c-b D. a-d-b-c
