Sir Isaac Newton was sitting in his garden when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.
A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fire, watching the lid of the kettle (水壶盖) move up and down. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. And when he became a man, he improved the steam engine (蒸汽机) so much that it could easily do the work of many horses.
James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he wondered. “Why should I not make a watch?” But how could he get the materials to make the mainspring (钟表的主发条)? He soon found he could make it with whalebone (鲸骨). He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. His motto (座右铭) was “I will think of it.” And he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.
Boys and girls, when you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t lose heart, and don’t ask someone for help before helping yourselves. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think to some purpose.

Bring all note-taking materials with you to class - several pens and pencils as well as your notebook.
2. Take Notes
Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying. Paying attention to "signal statements". Examples of signal statements are "The most important point ..." and "Remember that ..," Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or written on the blackboard.

26、I used to travel by air a great deal when I was a boy. My parents used to live in South America and I used to fly there from Europe during holidays. Everybody on board was worried and we wanted to find out what had happened. Later we learned that there was a very important person on board, and the police were told that a bomb(炸弹) was on the plane. After we had landed, the plane was searched thoroughly(被彻底搜查). Fortunately, nothing was found and five hours later we were able to take off again.

On Oct 23, Chinese swimmer Qin Haiyang got the title (称号) of the Best Male Swimmer of the Year 2023. He got the award just one day after he won the Swimming World Cup Overall Male Award. 【1】
People call Qin the “King of Breaststroke (蛙泳之王)” for his breaststroke achievements in 2023. 【2】 At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the 24-year-old broke five Asian records and became the first swimmer in history to win all three breaststroke golds at a single edition (单届).
【3】 It’s harder to swim fast because all the strokes (划水) in breaststroke happen under the water. This makes the water push back on the swimmer more, and it takes a lot of skill to swim well. “Even a small change in how you move your hands can make you swim faster or slower, I only need one to swim as far as they do.”
Even though Qin has won many awards, he is still modest. 【4】 “I’m just a breaststroke swimmer,” Qin said.
A.Breaststroke is not easy.
B.Qin keeps working hard to swim faster.
C.So he doesn’t want people to call him King of Breaststroke.
D.He won all 23 gold medals in breaststroke in the big competitions.
E.These are two very important achievements for Chinese swimming.
28、
A.The cartoon pig is not smart, either.
B.That’s why both children and adults find McDull cute.
C.However, the slow, silly pig has won over Hong Kong people.
D.According to his headmaster, McDull isn’t that silly. He’s just too kind.
E.The story is more than its funny points. It is pleasant and sour at the same time.
The best-loved pig in Hong Kong is called McDull. His mum makes a wish that he will look like Chow Yun-fat or Tony Leung, but he is well-known only by a birthmark around his right eye.
Everything he tries, he fails. He wants to be an Olympic champion of qiangbaoshan (抢包山), but the sport of catching the hottest baozi from a small mountain doesn’t really exist (存在), of course. He dreams of going to the Maldives, but ends up on only a one-day tour of a Hong Kong landmark instead.
【1】 McDull was at first a supporting character in a story about his cousin McMug, a smart baby pig and “what parents expect of their children.” But interestingly, the wooden-headed McDull gradually became more attractive when he told his classmates that if he became the class monitor, he would treat everyone with strawberry cakes. McDull tried to speak out one sentence in his speech, “If you choose me, you will be...painful.” For him, it looks only a little bit different from an “A” when he gets an “E”. 【2】
【3】 In one of the McDull movies, he talks to the audience (观众), “I suddenly realize that there is something you cannot have. No noodles, no Maldives, no golden medal, no money... Actually, being silly is not funny---it could mean failure (失败). Being fat is not funny. Being fat does not even mean you are stronger. Disappointment is not funny, either. When I grow up, and face the strict world that isn’t funny, what should I do?” He is still happy, however. He always starts again with a new dream when one fails him.
【4】 The popularity of McDull sometimes makes his creator Alice Mark confused, who has some simple thoughts, such as God creates humans, because he loves humans and he wants them to be happy. “Maybe people see themselves and their friends in McDull. McDull makes people realize that they used to be as simple and happy as him. If there is a theme in all the McDull movies, it is about how a simple person keeps his or her simplicity in a world full of problems. 【5】 ” says Alice Mark.
