24、When the phone finally stopped ringing and the house lay still with grief, I filled my home with the sweet smell of peach pie to mask the scent of worry that still lingered.
At the weekend after Dad’s diagnosis (诊断), Mom sent the same text to each concerned relative and friend: Jay was diagnosed with Pick’s disease. We were going back to the doctor for more information. Then Mom put down the phone, rubbed her forehead, and suggested that we go for a drive. On the interstate, we passed a board with clear red letters: “Fredericksburg peaches, the best fruit you can find in Central Texas.” Mom went to negotiate with the stand owner.
Now in our kitchen, the sweet smell of peach juice drifted into the living room and pulled Dad away from the football game on TV.
“Oh! You got peaches?” he eyed the fruit with childish glee (欢喜).
“Here,” I handed him a knife. “We’re making peach pie.”
I showed him how to peel the skin off. As I made pie dough, he asked questions: How long does it take to bake? Are you adding sugar? How many peaches? What should I do with the seeds? Showing him how to slice, measure and mix them in a calm, firm voice, I suddenly felt grown-up.
The summer had reversed our roles. Now, I was the adult. I stayed home all summer, cooked dinner for him, washed his T-shirts and helped him make phone calls. I stayed up late thinking about him and monitored him like an anxious caretaker.
The same day, before the afternoon drive and peach pie, I had held my tears as I read the diagnosis for Pick’s disease: four to ten years, depending on how fast the damaged proteins overpower Dad’s brain. I decided then that I would be grateful for just four more years with Dad, enough for him to see me become an adult for real.

25、It is less and less possible for moderns to have enough sleep because of the busy school or work life. Sleeping without worries about waking up too eary and enjoying wonderful dreams are like “ the castle in the sky” for many people; not everyone can get it. A study shows that only Americans sleep more than seven hours each day over surveying many countries, such as Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, etc. It is said that people over 20 should get seven hours of sleep each night and those under 20, one more hour of sleep. Sleeping less than six hours a night can make one get sick easily, lose his/her attention at school or at work and leave one 12% more likely to die before 65 years old. But sleeping too much is not good for one, either. Sleeping longer than nine hours a night can make one 30% more likely to die before 65.
If moderns cannot have enough sleep every day, he/she needs to learn at least how to sleep better. Here are some tips.
Move TVs and computers out of your bedroom.
Don’t play cellphones or use a computer before bed.
Don’t sleep with pets.
Keep exercising for thirty minutes three or four times in the morning or afternoon a week.
Keep one’s bedroom cool and listen to soft music before bed.
It goes without saying sleeping enough is important, and so is sleeping well. After all, if one gets insomnia because of poor sleep and cannot sleep well, one will feel tired and worried during the daytime!
【1】What do we learn about the reading?
A. Taiwanese sleep longer than Americans.
B. All of the people in the world except Americans have enough sleep.
C. People who sleep longer than nine hours may have more chances to die before 65 than those who sleep less than 6 hours.
D. All the people from different ages should sleep more than eight hours a day.
【2】Which way can help us get better sleep according to the reading above?
A. Listen to popular songs and make one’s room warm.
B. Make one’s puppy sleep in another place, not in his/her bedroom.
C. Exercise for half an hour before bed three or four times a week.
D. Clean the computer at the bedroom before sleeping.
【3】Which is true according to this article?
A. Moderns would like to sleep without worries.
B. People under 20 need to sleep for 7 hours.
C. Not only busy work but busy school is very important in modern life.
D. “ It” means building a castle in the sky is never possible.
【4】What is “ insomnia” ?
A. the sound one makes while sleeping.
B. being difficult to fall asleep.
C. worries about sleeping too much.
D. useful ways to help people to have good sleep.
26、Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.
One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.
The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).

D. The Federation should be ended.
【3】 The basketball example implied that().
A. too much patriotism was displayed in the incident
B. the announcement to make the match last longer was wrong
C. the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision
D. The American team was right in receiving the silver medals

B. Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.
C. Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.
