Wherever travelers go, cameras are sure to follow. It’s great fun to take photos, and even more fun to showslidesof the trip to friends and relatives when they come back home.
There’s Aunt Sarah, smiling in front of Buckingham Palace; Aunt Sarah, smiling under the Eiffel Tower; and Aunt Sarah, smiling in a Venetian Canal. Everyone knows what Aunt Sarah looks like; they also know what Europe’s great landmarks (显著地面景观) look like.
But a young man named David, just back from a trip to Greece, asked a few friends over to see his slides. The young man had an artist’s eye. His pictures were not of familiar Greek architectures. Instead he took pictures of farmers at work in the field, fishermen repairing their nets, and bearded priests (牧师) bending over their Bibles. He captured (抓住) the color and character of the country. His friends were so interested that they asked for more.
Any amateur (外行) can do the same. All he needs is a simple camera and a little sensitivity. When he learns that a nation lives in its people as well as in its landmarks, he moves from an amateur to an artist.

26、Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved reading crime and detective (侦探) novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older.
However, my family is very big on having a traditional career (职业) and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn’t. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing.
I suppose I could have studied journalism (新闻) ,but I didn’t want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure.
I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise (妥协 ) , especially because of the long holidays.
It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-five,I’d already finished two novels and had an agent. To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don’t know is because my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance (浪漫) novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, “Well, if you think it’ll make me successful, okay,”
I’d totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I’d written it - she even offered to lend it to me after she’d finished!
Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.
【1】Hazel is probably .
A.an agent B.a journalist C.a teacher and artist D.a teacher and writer
【2】The underlined words “is very big on ” in the passage most probably mean .
A.to give no advice B.to like something very much

B.accepted Brooke Lane as her pen name
C.would like to write something for teaching
D.told her workmates about her writing novels
【4】We can infer from the passage that .
A.Hazel likes showing off in public
B.Hazel’s students all want to write novels
C.Hazel’s agent has played a role in her success
D.older women prefer the name Brooke to Hazel
27、Do you choose to watch a happy movie or a sad movie when feeling sad or down? I advise you not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be right for you.
Scientists at Ohio State University, the US, have found that sad movies can make people happier. They published (刊登) their study in a magazine called Communication Research.
Scientists asked some college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated (分离的). They died during World War Ⅱ at the end of the movie. The college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie because the scientists wanted to know about the students’ different feelings, including the feeling of sadness.
The result showed that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed that it was because the movie made the students think about their own lives. Compared with those unlucky lovers in the movie, they thought their life was full of hope.
“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad feelings would make people more thoughtful. ”Good feelings are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. ”But bad feelings, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. So seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad at first, but that will cause you to think more about your own life and then you will value it more and finally feel much happier.”
