One night, Eva was sleeping weakly. St. Clare looked at his dear daughter and said in a sad tone, “ O, if she could only wake, and speak once more!” “ Dear papa,” said the child, with a last effort, throwing her arms about his neck. But in a moment, they dropped again.

St. Clare turned away in great pain. “ O, Tom, my boy, it is killing me.” He held Tom’s hand and said. Tom had his master’s hands between his own with tears running down his dark cheeks.

  • 25、If you want to do a school project on children’s rights(权利), you can look on the Internet for some information. A United Nations website can show you plenty of useful information for the project.

The United Nations lists the rights of children. Most countries agree all of them, but some countries do not. The following are some of the most important rights of children:

Children have the right to be properly fed, clothed and sheltered (庇护) by their family. If their family can’t do so, the government should take responsibility.

Children have the right to an education and medical care, which should be provided by the government.

Children must not be cruelly punished (惩罚)by their parents or any others.

Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of abuse (虐待) and neglect(忽略).

No child under fifteen should be made to fight in an army.

Children have the right to be protected from being made to work too hard to make money for other people.

In some countries children do not have these rights. Many young children are made to work long hours in factories and on farms. In some countries there are so few schools that only rich children get an education. There are not enough doctors or nurses to help many children when they are sick.

  • 26、   Joe was a boy with a special ability. He could make himself cry in less than a second. In this way, he could get almost everything he wanted.

One day, Joe met Pipo. Pipo had no family and was very poor. He was asking people for some money in the street. When people offered him some money, he would do something for them in return. Joe decided to help him make some money. He took off his hat, put it face-up on the ground and started crying sadly.

In a few minutes, Joe's hat was full of money, but when Joe gave Pipo the money, Pipo declined.

“It's much more fun making an effort to get things. Maybe I haven’t got everything I want, but I've done a lot of interesting things,” said Pipo. Joe walked away sadly. That evening, Joe wanted a piece of cake for his supper. When his mum refused, he wanted to cry. But he remembered what Pipo said. So he tried to get the cake in some other ways. To the joy and surprise of his parents, Joe spent the whole evening helping his mother with the housework. In the end, there was no cake. • 27、   What do you use to unlock your cellphone? A password? A fingerprint? Or simply a glance (一瞥)?

On Sept 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye-catching feature Face ID.

With Face ID, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it. It is powered by a camera system TrueDepth in the front of the iPhone X.

When the camera system sees a person’s face, it uses 30,000 unseen dots () to “map” (勾画) the shape and outline of the face. A model of the face will then be created and stored in the phone.

The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks. This happens in less than a second.

Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works.

Although the technology sounds amazing, there are still concerns. For example, will Face ID work for twins? What if someone uses a photo in front of the iPhone X?

According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating (出错率) rises.

Apple also emphasizes (强调) that Face ID is smart enough only to work when you want it to. It only unlocks when you open your eyes and stare at(盯住) it. So the phone won’t unlock if you are just glancing at the phone to know the time. It won’t work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo.

1Face ID helps iPhone X users to _________.

A.take pictures more quickly B.make their photos more beautiful

C.unlock their cell phones D.create their face models easily

2How does the camera system of Face ID work?

A.It compares the user’s face with the stored face model in the phone.

B.It remembers users’ faces by taking their pictures.

C.It uses a map to store face models of its users for later use.

D.It matches the users’ faces with unseen dots stored in the system.

3The iPhone X users may not unlock their phones when _________.

A.they have changed their hairstyles B.they glance the phone for the time

C.they use it without turning on the lights D.they wear makeup

4The underlined word “concerns” in Paragraph 7 probably means _________.

    A.achievements B.worries C.reward D.knowledge

5What is the main idea of the story?

A.We can unlock a smart phone in three different ways.

B.Apple’s iPhone X can’t tell the differences between different faces.

C.People don’t believe it’s safe to use Face ID.

D.Face ID is a program to unlock the iPhone X.
