24、 Do you know where J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books? She wrote the first books in a coffee shop. Was it because she felt more creative when working there? The answer might be yes!
Scientists from the University of Illinois found that moderate (适度的) noise can make people more creative, the New York Times reported.
Scientists did tests on students. They divided them into four groups. They then asked the students to do certain tasks involving creative thinking. But each group did the task with different volumes (音量) of background noise.
They found that students did best when working under moderate noise —70 decibels (分贝). This is about the same volume of background noise in a cafe. Students did worse in low noise (50 db). This is the volume of a quiet room. They did the poorest when in a high-noise (85 db) environment. This is the noise level in a factory.
Moderate noise can distract (分心) people just enough so that they think more creatively. “It helps you think outside the box,” Raci Mehta, a lead researcher in the study, said to the Business Standard.
On the one hand, working in a very quiet place can strengthen our focus. But it also stops us from thinking abstractly (抽象地).
“This is why if you are too focused on a problem and you can’t solve it,” said Mehta, “You leave it for some time and then come back to it and you get the solution.”
However, the scientists said that when you need to do detailed things, like proofreading (校对) a paper, a quiet place is better than a noisy one.

Terrafugia Inc. said that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car next year. The flying car named the Transition has two seats, four wheels and wings that can be folded, so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach about 70 miles every hour on the road and 115 miles in the air. Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s. According to Robert Mann, an airline scientist, Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the car really fly in the sky.
The government has already agreed the company to use special materials to make it easier for the car to fly. The Transition is now going through tests to make sure it is safe.

26、 The choice of colours for a room's walls and ceilling(天花板) can help you decide whether your design is successful or not. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning your home's colours.
Bright colors, like blue, yellow and orange, provide an expansive(膨胀的) feeling. These are friendly and happy colours. They can encourage communication and are especially welcome in the dining room and kitchen.

Cold colors, such as icy blue and green, have a calming effect. They are especially suitable for bedrooms. They help you fall asleep easily in the evening and become energetic when you get up the next morning.
Navy blue can make people unwilling to communicate, so do not use it in the living room or the dining room.
