  • 25、判断下列句子是否符合短文内容,符合的用 “T” 表示,不符合的用 “F”表示。

Jenkins was a jewler, a master craftsman (工匠) in the Silkstone Jewellery company. Ten years ago, he made a large diamond ring for the company. It was worth $2,000. The second ring looked exactly like the first one. Jenkins knew it would pass all the usual tests—except one possibility. Jenkins gave the much more valuable ring to his wife on her fortieth birthday, and the couple flew to Paris for a weekend. Later, the company sold the ring for $6,000.

Six months ago the buyer brought it back to Silkstone’s head office. “It’s a faulty diamond,” he said. “It isn’t worth the high price I paid.”

He explained the facts. His wife’s car had caught fire in an accident. She escaped, but the ring had come off her finger. It had fallen to the ground and been damaged in the great heat of the burning petrol.

The company had to agree. They knew that no fire on earth can ever damage a perfect diamond. Someone had taken the real diamond and put a faulty stone in its place. The question was: who?

A picture of the ring appeared in the newspaper. A professional photographer recognized the ring. The next day there was another picture in the paper: it showed a famous actress walking out to a plane for Paris. Behind the actress there was a woman wearing a large diamond ring. “Do you know the woman with the lovely diamond ring?” the papers asked the readers.

At his trial (审讯), Jenkins asked the judge to consider eighty-one similar crimes against the Silkstone Jewellery company.

The judge said, “You are a master craftsman who turned bad. I feel rather sorry. But I must send you to prison for seven years.”

【1】From the passage we can tell that the master craftsman is good at making diamond rings.

【2】Jenkins made a large diamond ring for his wife on her fortieth birthday.

【6】It was the professional photographer that helped to find the criminal.

【7】The master craftsman wasn’t put into prison at last.

  • 26、I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so small as she muscled(使劲挤出) her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.

One day I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation she said, “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship(奖学金). I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Well, I had to give it to her—she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her school team to victory.

One day, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing”, came a soft reply, “I am just too short.” The coach told her that at 165cm she would probably never get to play for a top team—much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten(喉咙哽噎) as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. _____________. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop her except one thing her own attitude.

  • 27、“Everything happens for the best.” Whenever I faced disappointments my mother would say this to me.

After I graduated from college in 2002, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer (播音员). I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I was refused every time.

At one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire (雇用) an inexperienced person and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. Following her advice, I went back to Dixon. There were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local sportsman to work for it. I applied for (申请) the job, but I was refused again.

“Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Lowa. The program director, Peter, told me they had already hired an announcer.

I left his office, and felt totally disappointed. While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was Peter. “What do you know about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to broadcast (播报) an imaginary game. Pleased with my performance, he offered me a chance to work there.

On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words, “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous (先前的) disappointment.”

  • 28、   National Doctors’ Day is a holiday in the United States. It is a holiday that honors doctors for the work they do for their1, the communities they work in and for society as a whole. It is their hard work that keeps all of us healthy and this day thanks them for doing that for us2our loved ones. The holiday started in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, and since then it’s been honored every year on March 30, which was the first anniversary of a doctor using ether anesthesia(乙醚麻醉) by Dr. Crawford W. Long.

We give greeting cards to doctors, both alive and3. The red carnation is also still popularly used to say “thank you” to doctors for their work in medicine.

Now when you need to see a doctor, surely you will want to see a good one. But there is one important thing you may never have thought about: Has your doctor rested enough?

Doctors in  our country often  have to work 34 hours or even4 (long) without sleep.  Most of them work 104 hours a week, and some even 150. (There are only 168 hours a5!) One report said that a doctor who works such long hours cannot think more6 (clear) than a drunk driver! Another found that doctors who sleep 5.8 fewer hours than the week before might make 22% more serious mistakes. Surely no one wants to get in a car that7 (drive) by a drunk driver. So, 8 (多么) safe would you feel when you are under the care of a tired doctor?

Sadly this problem has been around for a long time. There9no laws about it yet and hospital bosses don’t look like they  care,  either.  And  that  is  why  we  doctors  are  asking  you10( join) us this Sunday, to discuss how to deal with this problem!
