27、 In 2010, I left the United States for the first time to fly over 9,000 miles to Uganda, a country in recovery from civil war. I was going there to help the local kids learn soccer.
As I played soccer with some kids, the sun burned my skin. I took many breaks to drink from my water bottle before realizing I was the only one who did that. All the energetic children running around never stopped to get water. After looking around, I realized there was NOWHERE for them to get water, and there was no well or water pump in sight.
I asked a man who was traveling with us why the kids didn’t ever stop to drink water. He told me that they would have to walk all the way to the pump in the next village and they didn’t want to miss out on playing soccer with a real ball. The kids seemed happy but it was not fair that to get a drink of water meant they would miss out on such a rare occurrence of playing with an actual soccer ball.
When I got home, I spoke with other people about kids in Uganda. They told me to do something to help them. That sounded like a great idea, but how? I spoke with my friends about helping kids in Uganda. We decided that we could try to solve their most urgent problem—water. And we decided to organize soccer camps to collect money.
It has been three years since our first camp and we have successfully run two more and funded two water filtration (净化) systems as well as 60 water pumps for farmers. We have been able to improve the health of thousands of Ugandans.

A.She funded them to dig wells.
B.She organized several soccer games.
C.She collected money to buy water equipment.
D.She ran soccer camps to improve their health.

A.We can make a difference to others’ life.
B.We should fully enjoy what we have.
C.We should be grateful for what we receive.
D.We can change our lives through hard work.
28、 Today I achieved a dream that was born in April this year. Before April I never swam, biked or ran.I played basketball sometimes, but I did little in the way of endurance(耐力)workouts. One day in April, however, this changed.I want to find a way to challenge myself.I decided I was going to train for the Chicago marathon and complete it in six months.
The day finally came. For the first 11 miles, everything was going great.I was pacing(调整节奏)myself correctly and there wasn't too much pain or tiredness building up in my legs. Shortly after mile 12,however,I started to feel some pain.Miles 12-17 became a mental battle as I tried to convince myself to get to the finish line without walking.
Miles 17-20 were getting hard.I had to consciously push myself to stay at the race pace I was aiming for.My ankles(脚踝)were starting to hurt and my legs were giving out.At around mile 21 I got a stomach ache.I thought I might have to stop and walk for a minute, but the determination side of my brain took over and said,"Stick to your goals and never give up!”
The last 3-4 miles of the marathon were like nothing I have experienced. At the aid station at mile 24 I walked for a few seconds and drank some water. Then I started running and slowly I got back up to speed and went on.The last mile stands as the single most difficult thing I have done physically and mentally.Every step I took,my brain was screaming at me to walk.but I wouldn't listen.
When I crossed the finish line I was so happy and excited that I began to cry.I will never forget this day and I encourage everyone to go after that big event you have been thinking about, because although it will be hard, there are few more rewarding feelings than the feeling I had today crossing the finish line at the Chicago Marathon.

29、 When the first women to be admitted to Y ale arrived on campus 50 years ago,it had little idea how to support them at a place that was the oldest all-male college in the country.
Sixty-five percent of them had a class in which they were the only woman, according to an unpublished survey, conducted this year,of nearly half of the 575 female freshmen who entered Yale in 1969.Women weren’t permitted to have lunch at Mory’s,a dining club where important meetings took place. They were kept from most after-class activities.
Yale had been set up to educate“1,000 male leaders”and male students were selected on the basis of their future leadership. But women weren’t expected to be leaders.Instead, they were mainly evaluated(评估)on grit.
“It is a kind of determination,a pioneer quality,”Henry Chauncey, one of the Yale teachers, told The New York Times in 1969,“How to find the gritty women?Admit those who were raised with brothers—the more the better!”
“We had grit. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t challenging because Yale wasn’t entirely prepared for us,”said Sally Birdsall, who was the only female in the economy class. She remembers that a professor warned her that he did not want to hear knitting needles(织针)in his class.
“I was upset,not because I had a knitting needle,but I was more scared,”she said.“It just gave me a very unwelcome feeling.”
In their post-college achievements, they were unusual among American women of their age,and faced challenges that have become familiar to highly educated women today:how to achieve educational, job and family goals when they’re all running on the same clock with men.
Eighty-two percent of the surveyed women had children, and their average age of first birth was 33.The national average at the time was 21.
Their experiences show how much has changed in 50 years—and how much has not.
