24、Nov. 21 is World Hello Day. It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created by the United Nations just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973. Its aim is to encourage people to use communication rather than force to settle conflicts(解决争端)。 The philosophy (理念) behind it is: Say “Hello” and stop war.
It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simple saying “Hello” won’t bring about world peace. Still, the simple act of saying “hello ”to someone can truly make a lot of difference. You raise your head to someone as you pass by , say “Hello’.It is such a casual (不经意的)thing and requires so little effort, but you might even make his day.
Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Some people are lonely because they’re shy. That leads to them feeling cut off.they find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want to. They may secretly smile in their hearts after they hear your greetings. It’s a good idea, not just on Nov.21, but every day, to remember to say “hello”to as many people as we can.
No one said it better than the French writer Joseph Joubert: “Politeness is the flower of humanity(人性)’’. A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视), but through it we can make the world better for another person.

Ask Angela
Many newspapers have an advice page. So does the school newspaper of Xinhan Middle School. Angela Wang is the editor responsible for the page. Students like to write to her for advice.
Dear Angela,
I’m 16 and I want to leave school this year. My parents say it is too early and that I should be trying to get into high school. I want to work at McDonald’s. Then I can start earning money to buy things.
Jane
Dear Jane,
Your parents are right. It would be better if you can complete as much of your education as possible. Real independence won’t come from earning 150 yuan a week. It will come from the qualifications(资历、学历)and experience that you would gain by staying at school for a couple more years.
Angela
Dear Angela,
My parents and I have been fighting a lot recently. I’m 16, but they still treat me like a kid. My mom calls me 20 times if I don’t get home before 7 p.m. I tried talking to them about this, but they never change. What can I do?
Jim
Dear Jim,
Being angry and standing against your parents will not solve the problem. Try communicating with them from their point of view. Make a list of things you wish to do and another list of your parents’ possible concerns about them. Let your parents know you have learned to be responsible for yourself.
Angela
Dear Angela,
I am having an issue with my Chemistry teacher. She is super nice to my classmates but behaves completely differently towards me. She blames me for things I didn’t do. What should I do?
Mike
Dear Mike,
In a situation like this, you’d better speak to the teacher directly. This way, you can understand why she has a different attitude towards you. Our personal bias(偏见)might influence our thoughts about other people. Make sure the way you feel the teacher treats you isn’t influenced by any bias.

27、 Amy was a dear little girl, but she was too ready to waste time in getting ready to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she ought to.
In the village in which she lived, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruit of all kinds, including berries in their season. One day he said to Amy, whose parents were quite poor, "Would you like to earn some money?"
"Oh, yes, "replied she, "for I want some new shoes, and papa has no money to buy them with."
"Well, Amy," said Mr. Thornton, "I noticed some fine, ripe blackberries in Mr. Green's field today, and he said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you thirteen cents a quart(度量单位) for all you will pick for me."
Amy was delighted at the thought of earning some money; so she ran home to get a basket, intending to go immediately to pick the berries.
Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five quarts. With the help of her slate(书写板) and pencil, she found out that she would get sixty-five cents.
"But supposing I should pick a dozen quarts," thought she, "how much should I earn then?" "Dear me!" she said, after figuring(测算) a while, "I should earn a dollar and fifty-six cents."
Amy then found out what Mr. Thornton would pay her for fifty, a hundred, and two hundred quarts. It took her some time to do this, and then it was so near dinner time that she had to stay at home until afternoon.
As soon as dinner was over, she took her basket and hurried to the field. Some boys had been there before dinner, and all the ripe berries were picked. She could not find enough to fill a quarter of a quart.

Nowadays experience, like many other things, is becoming more and more .
Several days ago, I wanted to invite my friends to lunch. What we really needed was a good and quiet for some conversation, not a big meal, I chose one only for people like me who belonged to a particular club. What could be nicer?
When I a day before, I was asked whether I would eat a $20 or $50 lunch. I said, “$50 .” I didn’t realize until I was asked to pay after the lunch, that “$50” means “$50 for each person.” There were five of us that day. When the bill(账单)came , it was $310.40 (250 for food and the rest for drinks, fruits and air-conditioning). Though everybody was surprised, I paid the bill without a word.
What could I say? It was my own that made me pay the lunch bill of my life. On the whole, it was not so . We had a wonderful lunch and the place was beautiful. Besides, the experience was good and special, and will in later years. To support the logic(逻辑)of the lunch bill, I have developed my own way to explain it: $50 for the lunch and $260.40 for the .
