二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What are your retirement plans? Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as mars.

On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first-ever Mars show home, giving earthlings (地球人) an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. In the not-so-distant year of 2037, the igloo-shaped structure could be the home of your future.

It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft (航天器) parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognizable—a kitchen, a bedroom—but there are fundamental differences that are important to human survival.

As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent (永久的) shelter from the sun; society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.

Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick to protect people from dangerous rays (光线) that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double air-locked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.

“We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of sci-fi. “10 to 20 years from now there will certainly be people, on Mars.” Petranek says.

“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,” Petranek says. But two main factors have “completely swung public attitudes”.

The private companies’ participation has forced government agencies to speed up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye.

【1】What can we know about the show home from the text?

A.It has no windows or doors due to security concern.

B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection.

C.It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure.

D.Its underground passages connect all the building together.

【2】What do the underlined words “put them on hold” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Put them off.

    B.Give them away.

    C.Carry them through.

    D.Take them seriously.

【3】According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars?

A.The great influence of the Mars show home.

    B.The development of related technology.

    C.The competition from private companies.

D.The popularity of influential books on Mars.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Living on Mars: Possible or Not

B.Sending People to Mars: Yes or No

C.First-ever show home: How Is It Made

D.Future Home on Mars: What Will It Be Like

  • 27、   San Francisco has decided that its city government workers can't use computer programs that recognize faces. It is the first US city to take such a strong step to keep this technology under control.

When a computer system identifies a person from their face in a pictureit's called “facial recognition". Many police departments use facial recognition. It can be helpful when police just have a picture of a suspect(嫌疑犯). but no other information. Normallyeven with facial recognitionpolice must have other proof showing that a person is guilty.

But many people say facial recognition programs aren't good enough yet. The programs can usually recognize white men. But they're not so good at identifying women and people with darker skin. They worry that "false matches"-when the computer thinks it has identified a personbut it's wrong-will make innocent people look like criminals.

For companies like Amazon and Microsoftfacial recognition is a big business. Amazon has worked hard to sell their facial recognition program to police departments around the US. Microsoft sells tools that allow prisons to watch people inside.

To work wellfacial recognition programs must have a great number of pictures of people. But most people whose pictures are in the systems never gave permission(许可)for their pictures to be used.

Many people worry that using computers to identify or track people will decrease freedom. Nowin many placesfacial recognition is used to keep people under control and much of public life is watched on security cameras. Similarlymany cities in America and Europe are also almost completely covered by security cameras. Police officers now often wear cameras on their bodiesrecording all the time. It's usually not clear when governments are using facial recognition and how they are using it.

Facial recognition is already being used at airports throughout Europe and in the US. The Department of Homeland Security expects to have pictures of 97%of the people flying out of the country in the next four years.

As these powerful computer programs become more common, San Francisco's move to control facial recognition is an unusual and strong move to limit the way governments use computers to watch and control people.

1Why do people worry about facial recognition programs?

    A. They cannot multiply people's responsibility.

    B. They cannot help police identify good people.

    C. They will mistake innocent people for bad people.

    D. They will identify black people instead of white people.

2How can facial recognition programs function effectively?

    A. Companies should work with each other.

    B. People should have more pictures taken.

    C. They should include as many pictures as possible.

    D. Police departments and prisons should be under control.

3What makes people feel their freedom is on the decrease?

    A. There are police everywhere.

    B. A lot of security cameras are used.

    C. More people are forced to stay at home.

    D. Governments focus more on facial recognition.

4What's San Francisco's attitude towards government workers using facial recognition?

    A. Disapproving. B. Supportive.

    C. Doubtful. D. Optimistic.

  • 28、Parents do not owe (欠) their children a college education, if they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn’t feel guilty if they can’t. When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their obligations is to give their children a sense of personal worth. Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that they won’t try at all. Of course, they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it’s often better to let children learn from their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms (批评) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.

Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others. Also, it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.

No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.

【1】What does the underlined word “obligation” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Duty

    B.Burden

    C.Excuse

    D.Debt

【2】According to this passage, what should parents do for their children?

A.Offer help but needn’t feel guilty if they can’t.

B.Look after their grandchildren for their kids.

    C.Buy their kids a house.

D.Send their children to the university.

【3】In the author’s opinion, when the kids make mistakes, what are parents supposed to do?

A.Blame them and tell them not to do that again.

B.Give them chances to learn from their mistakes.

C.Compare them with brighter brothers or sisters.

    D.Correct their mistakes directly.

【4】What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?

A.The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.

    B.How to teach children correctly.

C.The real duties that parents have to their kids.

D.The reason why parents owe their children something.

  • 29、Whenever we talk about holidays, my mother teases my sister and me about how we “make out like robbers.” She is referring to the fact that we are half Jewish and half Indian, so we receive gifts on both the. festivals of lights. Hanukkah and Diwali. Though my mother teases us, I do not mind getting two sets of gifts!

Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month. which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families. we light a menorah and say a prayer each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do ‘hot and cold’, for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say ‘hot’ and when we walk further away, they say ‘cold’. We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.

Diwali is celebrated on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin(October / November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does a pooja, or prayers, in honor of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, the pooja includes washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just places a few candles outside We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.

Both holidays have different histories and stories We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into. Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!

【1】Why does the author receive gifts on both Hanukkah and Diwali?

A.Because he lives in a rich family.

B.Because he lives in two different countries.

C.Because his parents like celebrating their different cultures.

D.Because his parents like spending money buying gifts for them.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “hot and cold” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.A kind of Hanukkah game.

    B.A kind of Hanukkah gift.

    C.A can of festival drink.

    D.A riddle written on lights.

【3】we can learn from the text that Hanukkah and Diwali .

A.share the same history and culture

B.are celebrated by both Jews and Indians

C.are both related to the legend of lights

D.encourage the families to do their prayers

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards Hanukkah and Diwali?

A.She enjoys celebrating both of them.

    B.She does mind spending them.

    C.She likes Hanukkah better.

    D.She likes Diwali better.
