二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.

Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.

Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so pleased in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.

Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.

This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house.

Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.

That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.

1What happened when the author was about to take a photo?

A.A woman blocked her view. B.Her camera stopped working.

C.Someone asked her to leave. D.A friend approached from behind.

2According to the author, the woman was probably_______.

    A.losing her patience B.enjoying herself

C.waiting for the sunset D.thinking about her past

3In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive?

A.The rich color of the landscape. B.The perfect positioning of the camera.

C.The soft sunlight that summer day. D.The woman’s existence in the photo.

  • 27、   OTTAWA—After leaving suddenly almost twenty years ago, fans of one Italian car brand (品牌) have been crying. “Oh, Alfa Romeo, where are you?” But with the arrival of the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C sports car this year, parent Fiat’s sportiest brand is back in business in Canada. The question is: Will anybody care?

Although it hasn’t sold a new car in Canada since 1995, the Alfa Romeo brand is one of the oldest in the car industry. It was founded in 1910. It quickly became well-known for making fast, beautiful and expensive sports cars. An Italian state-holding company took over in the early 1930s, but since 1986, the Alfa brand has been owned by Fiat.

Unfortunately, Alfa Romeo met fresh competition from Japan. By the mid-1990s, Alfa’s lone North American offerings were the Spider roadster (单排座敞篷轿车).

Many Alfa fans will tell you the brand’s success is on the racetracks (赛车场). Dating back to 1913, Alfa Romeo has always had a strong factory presence in racing. But since the late-1980s the Italian automaker has become less involved in car races.

While Alfa Romeo has shot a few videos of its new mid-engine, two-seat 4C on a racetrack. there are no plans for the car maker to get back into racing.

One of the biggest attractions for Toronto Alfa Romeo fan Vytas Svedas is the brand’s racing past. He currently takes part in many races with his father with a 1966 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT, and he thinks if Alfa wants to be taken seriously as it returns to selling cars in Canada, it has to get back on the racetrack.

Of course, not all Alfa fans need a racetrack to enjoy their cars. David Semel is the president of the Alfa Romeo Club of Ottawa. Semel’s current ride is a 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia SS. And, he admits, the main attraction of the Giulia SS is the way the car looks, not how fast it can go.

1What do we know about Alfa Romeo?

    A. It is quite affordable for the common people.

    B. It is a brand of a state-holding company.

    C. It has a history of about a century.

    D. It entered Canada in 1995.

2Why did Alfa Romeo lose its Canadian market?

    A. Because the Canadians lost interest in sports cars.

    B. Because there were fewer car races held in Canada.

    C. Because it faced very strong competition from Japan.

    D. Because its quality couldn’t meet the local buyers needs.

3What’s Wytas Svedas’s attitude towards Alfa Romeo s not getting back into racing?

    A. Understanding. B. Unconcerned.

    C. Pleased. D. Disappointed.

4According to David Semel, Alfa Romeo ________.

    A. will return to racing sooner or later

    B. has other advantages besides speed

    C. is not necessarily the fastest car

    D. is losing lots of its fans

  • 29、   Hong Kong is among the cities which have the largest populations in the world, but with night skies around 1,000 times brighter than globally accepted levels, it gains a bad reputation(名声) for its light pollution.

A study by Hong Kong University found that brightness levels in the southern Chinese city's popular shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui were 1,200 times greater than the international dark sky standard.

The crowded city of 7 million people, full of residential(住宅的) high-rises, towering office blocks and neon(霓虹灯) advertisements has no laws to control outdoor lightning.

The result is that light pollution is thought to be much worse than in other large cities, including London, Sydney, Tokyo and Shanghai.

“In Hong Kong, you can't go anywhere outdoor in the evening without your eyes being blinded by this really upsetting outdoor lightning,” the light pollution survey's head Jason Pum told AFP.

“The fact that we have all this light in the sky means energy is wasted,” he said, adding that too much artificial lightning also affects nightly wildlife.

Research has suggested that light pollution can cause a number of harmful health problems in humans, including sleeplessness and headaches and can also affect body clocks and hormones(荷尔蒙).

The university's survey, the result of five million measurements taken from points across the city, was released just days before the start of the yearly Earth Hour event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund.

People around the world will be encouraged to turn off the lights for an hour on Saturday night to advertise climate change. Last year, a number of Hong Kong's major buildings along Victoria Harbour went dark to mark Earth Hour.

“Anyway, we should do our best to reduce the amount of lightning and suit it to the benefit of the environment.”

1If you walk out at night in Hong Kong, you can see all those things except ______.

    A.neon advertisements B.residential buildings

C.a dark sky with many stars D.high office blocks

2Which of the following statements about too much lightning is NOT true?

A.Too much lightning means wasting energy. B.It can make the city more beautiful at night.

C.It may have a bad effect on nightly wildlife. D.It can do great harm to human beings' health.

3We can know from the passage that__________

A.Earth Hour is simply organized to reduce pollution. B.light pollution is the biggest problem in Hong Kong.

C.light pollution is the primary causes of sleeplessness. D.light pollution in Hong Kong is among world's worst.

4What will the author probably discuss after the last paragraph?

A.Ways to reduce light pollution B.Causes of light pollution

C.Worries about light pollution D.Bad effects of light pollution
