二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When you work out a carbon footprint(碳足迹)a lot of factors are taken into consideration. For example, driving to the grocery store bums a certain amount of fuel, and fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases. But that grocery store is powered by electricity, and its employees probably drive to work, so the store has its own carbon footprint. In addition, the products that the store sells were all shipped there, so that must also be factored into the total carbon footprint. Beyond that, the fruits. Vegetables, and meats that the store sells were all grown or raised on farms-a process that produces methane(甲烷)which has a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than CO. All of those elements must be combined to understand the full carbon footprint of a given activity.

Although adding up one's own carbon footprint can be difficult, online calculators can do some of the work for you, giving a rough estimate(估算)of your carbon footprint based on the size of your household, the efficiency of your machines, how much you drive or fly, what you eat, and how much you recycle

This isn't perfect, but it is a good way to measure your activities so you can know roughly how much CO2 they produce and take steps to reduce your carbon footprint.

Methods of reducing your carbon footprint include driving more efficient vehicles (or making sure that your current vehicles are properly maintained), taking public transportation, using energy efficient machines, building your home with special materials to reduce heating and air conditioning costs. consuming food that doesn't require as much transportation, and eating less meat which has a higher carbon footprint than fruits and vegetables. People and companies can also offset some of their CO2, emissions(排放)by purchasing carbon credits, the money from which can go into projects such as planting trees or investing in renewable energy.

1By giving the example of the grocery store, the author wants to tell us that____

A.driving to the store burns a certain amount of fuel

B.the greenhouse effect of methane is greater than that of CO2

C.the fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases

D.many factors need to be considered when figuring out a carbon footprint

2Which of the following best explains the underlined word 'offset' in the last paragraph?

    A.make up for

    B.make sense of

    C.take control of

    D.catch up with

    3The passage is mainly about____

A.whether it is possible to reduce the carbon footprint

B.what we can do to figure out the carbon footprint

C.how to estimate and reduce the carbon footprint

D.why we should reduce the carbon footprint

  • 28、   One day, when I was working as a psychologist(心理学家) in England, a young boy showed up in my office.

It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had introduced him to me before. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems which psychology doesn’t have answers to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and silently. And I would do in this way.

The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon — in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering. ” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

    “It’s your turn,” he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I have also learned that one — without any words — can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

1What was David like when the writer first met him?

A.He was very nervous. B.He was in deep sorrow.

C.He was mentally troubled. D.He was frightened by the writer.

2What do we know from the third paragraph?

A.The writer didn’t know what to do. B.The writer had a plan to help David.

C.The writer decided to keep silent. D.The writer couldn’t solve the problem.

3Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The writer cheated when playing chess. B.David never looked at the writer.

C.Chess healed David’s wounded heart. D.The writer gave his chess to David.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.A boy fixed his mental problem by playing chess. B.A psychologist should be good at listening.

C.A calm mind helps solve problems. D.A listening ear matters in helping others.

  • 29、   Tom goes everywhere with Catherine Green, a 54-year-old secretary(秘书). He moves around her office at work and goes shopping with her. "Most people don't seem to mind Tom," says Catherine, who thinks he is wonderful. "He's my fourth child," she says. She may think of him and treat him that way as her son, buying his food, paying his health bills and his taxes(), but in fact Tom is a dog.

Catherine and Tom live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. This level of care costs money.

People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so it's surprised to find that owning a dog means yet more taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Swedish kronor in taxes a year for the right to keep their dog, money that is spent by the government on dog hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a dog that falls ill. However, most such treatment is expensive, so owners often decide to offer health and even life premium for their dog.

In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dog does. A Swedish Kennel Club official explains what this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the accident.

1The money paid as dog taxes is used to .

A.pay for damage done by dogs

    B.provide medical care for dogs

C.keep a high level of care for the people

    D.buy insurance for dog owners

2The underlined world "premium" possibly means .

A.payment(付款) for entertainment B.payment for food

    C.payment for risks D.protection fee

3If a dog causes a car accident and gets killed, who should pay for the damage done to the car?

A.The owner of the dog. B.The owner of the car.

    C.The insurance company. D.The government.

4From the text it can be inferred that in Sweden .

A.many car accidents are caused by dogs

B.keeping dogs means asking for trouble

    C.people care much about dogs.

D.dogs are welcome in public places

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 30、An internet troll is someone who posts insulting comments in an online chat room, social-networking site or blog. Their aim is not to contribute to the discussion, but to ______ people or     make them angry.

Sometimes the comments are fairly ______. For example, a troll might visit a website that is     dedicated to fighting global warming and post a comment like ‘Global warming is a myth made up by second-rate scientists who just want to further their own careers.’ Some visitors to the website might think that the opinion is genuine and start ______. This is exactly what the troll wants: to start a fight.

However, many trolls are far more dangerous and post comments that are deeply hurtful. In 2011, 45-year-old Nicola Brookes left a message of support for a reality TV contestant on Facebook. The contestant had received hate mail on Facebook and, feeling ______ for the young man, Ms Brookes left a message on his Facebook page, saying simply: ‘Keep your chin up, Frankie, they’ll move on to someone else soon.’ They did move on to someone else—Ms Brookes—within minutes. More than 100 cruel messages were left in just 24 hours, and a(n) ______ Facebook page was set up in her name.

Racist trolling probably has the highest profile cases. When Premier League footballer Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field during a match in 2012, racist messages appeared on Twitter taking pleasure in his ______ and laughing at him. ______, Muamba made a complete recovery. The effects of such attacks can be terrible, especially for people who are being targeted precisely because they admitted to a vulnerability (易受伤) in the first place.

So ______ do trolls post messages that cause such distress? Some of them are sad, lonely people with their own problems who ______ the attention their posts attract. They behave badly online because they feel ______ normal standards of polite and considerate behaviour. They are in a virtual world and     do not have to face their victims. They say things that they would never dare to say ______. Finally, trolls believe that they can remain unknown and that no one will ever ______ who they are.

That is about to ______. however. When Nicola Brookes first approached the police and made a complaint, they told her there was nothing they could do. So she contacted lawyers and began legal action to force Facebook to disclose the identities of the trolls who had been tormenting (折磨) her. She ______ the case and is free to pursue private prosecutions ( 起 诉 ) against those responsible for tormenting her. With trolls facing ______ and possible prosecution in future, hopefully they will think twice before posting insulting messages.

We went to Darjelling during the summer holidays and booked a cottage(农舍) for our stay. Our cook Gopi came with us because we could not do without home-cooked meals.

Usually all the shopping was done by our home help Bharat, who went to our holiday destination with us. However, one early evening, my mother decided to do all the vegetable shopping by herself. She believed that Bharat did not wait to check the really fresh items and instead, bought some things in a hurry. As a result, the vegetables he brought back were not fresh.

After getting ready, she took her favorite purse with quite an amount of money, thinking she could go to other shops too after finishing at the vegetable market. My mother asked Bharat to get a rickshaw for her and on reaching the market, she asked the rickshaw wallah ( 人力车车夫) to wait for her. She took a coolie (小工) and did her shopping happily, choosing some of the freshest green vegetables available there. At last, her shopping was done. She returned to the rickshaw and sat on it while the coolie put all the things my mother had bought onto the rickshaw.

On reaching home, Bharat took all the packets of vegetables inside and my mother quickly paid the rickshaw wallah and got off, forgetting to collect her purse from the seat of the rickshaw. The rickshaw wallah left soon after saying goodbye to my mother. All of us greeted my mother and asked her about her evening of shopping with much delight.

Then we began to help my mother prepare our dinner. My father came to help cut the meat; I helped wash the vegetables; we were talking and laughing. When dinner was ready, it was late in the evening, almost 9 p.m.

    Paragraph 1:

Then my mom realized her purse was missing.
