二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.

As a writer, I know about winning contests – and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

1What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A.A lot of amusements compete for children’s time nowadays.

B.Children have lots of fun doing mindless activities.

C.Rebecca is much too busy to enjoy her leisure time.

D.Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

2What did the author say about her own writing experience?

A.She was constantly under pressure to write more.

B.Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

C.She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

D.Her road to success was full of pain and frustrations.

3Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?

A.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

B.She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.

C.She wanted to share her stories with readers.

D.She had won a prize in the previous contest.

4The underlined sentence probably means that the author was _______.

A.trying not to let her daughter enjoy her own life

B.trying to get her daughter to do the thing as the author wished

C.making sure that her daughter would win the contest

D.helping her daughter develop real skills for writing

  • 27、   Imagine being face-to-face with a woolly mammoth (猛犸象) . It would be quite a sight. Scientists believe it would tower above 11 feet tall and have a sloping back, a long, powerful trunk, and sharp, curved tusks that stretch up to 10 feet. Its thick hair would be up to three feet long. It would weigh six tons—about as heavy as a bus.

You’ve probably never seen a giant furry elephant before. Actually, you definitely haven’t. The species has been extinct for thousands of years.

But a few years from now, you might be able to see a woolly mammoth in person. Scientists believe they have the technology to recreate it.

A team of South Korean and Russian scientists plan to clone a woolly mammoth. How will they do it?

Several woolly mammoth bodies have already been discovered in Siberia, an icy region in Russia. The scientists plan to take cells from these frozen mammoths. In a laboratory, they’ll use them to create a new cluster () of cells called an embryo. The embryo will be placed into the womb of a living female elephant. That elephant will then give birth to a baby woolly mammoth.

The scientists believe the whole process will take five years. Many scientists and animal lovers can’t wait. It will be so exciting to be able to bring a creature that has been extinct for thousands of years back to life. People would travel from around the world for the chance to see a living woolly mammoth. By observing the way the creature looks and acts, scientists might make brand-new discoveries about the history of animal life.

Other experts aren’t so sure about the woolly mammoth project. One big question is what to do with a mammoth. The Earth has changed in the thousands of years since these animals roamed the planet. Where would the creature live, and would it be able to survive in today’s climate ? Some believe that the money being spent on the experiment could be better spent on other important scientific projects, such as fighting diseases.

But the South Korean and Russian scientists are sticking to their plan. They admit they have a big challenge ahead. There is no guarantee that they will succeed, but they’ re hopeful.

    1The first paragraph describes the mammoth’s ________.

    A.habitat B.food

    C.appearance D.lifespan

2What is the challenge for scientists to clone a mammoth?

A.Whether they have enough money for the project.

B.Whether the mammoth can adapt to the new environment.

C.Whether the mammoth can survive the modern diseases.

D.Whether their plan wins support from the public.

3The last paragraph implies that the attitude of scientists to cloning mammoths is ______.

    A.negative B.disapproving

    C.optimistic D.doubtful

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Scientists are finding ways to deal with mammoths.

B.Scientists try to find out the history of animal life.

C.Scientists plan to bring the mammoth back to life.

D.Scientists pay little attention to the return of the mammoth.

  • 28、   It's hard to imagine a person today who would not be able to recognize at least one of Charles Schulz's beloved cartoon characters.

For the older generation, the beloved Peanuts strip continues to run in newspapers worldwide today. For the younger generation, Snoopy merchandise was part and parcel of growing up. For even younger fans the 2015 Peanuts movie will make sure that the memory of Charlie Brown, Lucy and Snoopy will not fade with time, like its pencil counterpart.

Peanuts is memorialized especially in Sonoma County California. The county is home to the Charles M. Schulz Museum, the well-known guardian angel of Schulz's memory. Schulz moved there in 1958 eight years after Peanuts made its debut in newspapers.

Although Schulz decided to put down lasting rots in the warm and sunny southwest, he often thought of his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He remembered that in his childhood, every sidewalk in front of every school had a sheet of ice at least ten feet long, worn smooth from the kids sliding on it. Just over ten years later, Schulz purchased an old ice rink and opened Snoop's Home Ice, the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, which bordered the property housing his studio. Whenever the snowy days of his childhood crossed his mind, Schulz was eager to allow his children to enjoy the hobbies he pursued in his youth, and encouraged them to pick up ice hockey and figure skating. That's why the cold winters in his drawings always remind people of the Midwest.

Schulz spent the last thirty years of his life on this property. He wrote in his studio, ate in the Warm Puppy Café at the ice rink and enjoyed, as he described it "hanging out." The artist passed away in his sleep on February 12, 2002, one day before his final original Sunday strip appeared in newspapers around the world.

The Peanuts strip follows the lives of children but they were by no means Schulz's target audience. Instead, Schulz holds the camera at a child's level and observes the truths of adult life from their perspective. Themes of love, loss and failure were throughout his work, all of which were inspired by events in his own life. It is Schulz's gentle, humorous explanation of the world's hash realities that ensures Peanuts will be preserved in years to come.

1What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 most probably refer to?

A.The Peanuts strips that appeared in newspapers.

B.The Snoopy patterns printed on clothes.

C.The animated cartoon adapted from the Peanuts strips.

D.The original manuscripts drawn by Charles M. Schulz.

2Which of the following CANNOT be used to describe Charles M. Schulz?

    A.Depressed. B.Creative.

    C.Humorous. D.Clever.

3What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.Schulz moved to Sonoma County because he hated the cold climate in his hometown.

B.Schulz's childhood experiences in his hometown inspired the winter scenes in Peanuts.

C.Schulz's life in Sonoma County was the main source of inspiration for his drawings.

D.Schulz opened an ice rink because his children enjoyed ice hockey and figure skating

4Which of the following with statements is TRUE according to this article?

A.Peanuts is popular with people of all ages around the world.

B.Schulz's hometown is the best place for Peanuts fans to memorize him.

C.Schulz created the Peanuts strip for his children

D.Peanuts reveals the truths of loss and failure through the eyes of adults.

  • 29、Buying furniture is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online without ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made? The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation, Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”

The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue (组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to go to actually grow a table, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia leaves.

Making furniture and other items from biomaterials could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. “The way we get these materials hasn’t changed in centuries and is very inefficient,” said Velasquez-Garcia. “This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency.”

There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape — like 3 D printing — so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing parts together.

Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. “That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic (战略上的) about what we’re getting out of our process? Can we get more yield for our inputs?” she told MIT News. “I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity.”

Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new biomaterials become readily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health, and recreational value. These researchers, like Velasquez-Garcia, are speaking for the trees.

【1】What does the author think of growing furniture according to Paragraph 1?

A.It turns out to be convenient.

    B.It’ll cut down daily expense.

C.It might have a bright future.

D.It’s as important as making furniture.

【2】What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Risk.

    B.Fancy.

    C.Remove.

    D.Delay.

【3】What is the purpose of Beckwith’s growing furniture?

    A.To make large profits.

    B.To keep biodiversity.

    C.To increase production.

    D.To use wild resources.

【4】What’s the key to protecting forests?

    A.Wide use of new biomaterials.

B.Less use of wood products and paper.

    C.Making effective forest laws.

    D.Caring more for the environment.

  • 31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
