26、While elephants born without tusks (长牙)are not unheard of,they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing 33 percent of female elephants born after the country’s civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear to be just a coincidence, Joyce Poole, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution of the species due to the constant hunting of elephants for valuable ivory.
Poole says before the country’s 15-year-long civil war, the 100,000-acre park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 percent of them had been killed for ivory to help finance weapons (武器)and meat to feed the soldiers. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 percent of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.
This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory.
The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help get rid of, or at least reduce, elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to change the trend.

27、Madame Curie, the youngest of five children, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. Marie Curie’s maiden name was Manya. Her parents were teachers, and she learned the importance of education at an early age. No higher education was offered to women in Poland at that time, so Manya took a job as a governess (女家庭教师). She sent part of her income to Paris to help pay for her older sister’s medical studies. Her sister qualified as a doctor and married a fellow doctor in 1891. Manya went to join them in Paris, changing her name to Marie. She entered the Sorbonne (now the Universities of Paris) and studied physics and mathematics, graduating at the top of her class. For the research she wanted to do, she was introduced to another young scientist, Pierre Curie. Later they fell in love with each other. After their marriage, they worked together on radioactivity.
Fame troubled Marie Curie and also her husband, because science was their world and in this world of science fame and honor to persons had no value. One day when a writer for a newspaper tried to ask Marie about herself and her thoughts and her beliefs, she answered him, “In science we must be interested in things, not in persons.” Much of the real character and spirit of this unusual woman was found in these few words, which she was later often to repeat. One evening, at a big party, a friend asked if she would like to meet the King of Greece, who was also a guest. She answered in her simple manner, “I don’t see the value of it.” Then, seeing that she had hurt the feelings of her friend, she quickly added, “But …but…of course, I shall do whatever you please. Just as you please.”

28、Can we forget bad memories? Someone might tell you that time is the only “cure”. But this might be not true.
Researchers at Canada’s McGill University have tested a pill that can help you forget bad memories. They tested it on 60 people and found it to be successful.
All 60 people had experienced painful romantic relationships and wanted to forget them. In the study, they were asked to write about these bad memories. Then, they took a pill that is usually used to treat high blood pressure. They then recalled their bad memories by reading what they wrote earlier. In the end, they talked about their feelings, saying that they were finally able to forget their bad experiences.
Dr. Alain Brunet, who led the study, believes that the pill can ease the pain that bad memories bring. People can take it after bad things happen to them.
How did the pill do this? In fact, your memories change all the time. They’re like text files on your computer. Every time you recall and “open” the files, you might happen to make some changes and “save” them. Researchers believe that the pill can stop proteins in the brain from “re-saving” these memories. This means some details of the memory are lost.
However, there are some ethical worries about this treatment. Some people might use it to forget things that they should be learning from, such as when they committed a crime. People are discussing which kinds of memories should be forgotten with this pill.
How do we form memories?
The part of our brain known as the hippocampus is important for forming new memories. Scientists found it after studying a patient named Henry Molaison in the 1950s. After Molaison’s hippocampus got hurt during an operation, he couldn’t store new memories. But he could remember memories from before the operation. This means long-term memories are stored outside the hippocampus. Scientists believe they are stored in the neocortex, which controls attention and planning.

29、In Singapore, buses have been given the green light to find new ways to reduce emissions (排放) and improve the air quality of their services.
Last month, GWS Living Art, a company specializing in urban green structures installed (安装) green roofs on 10 public buses. While a bus might not seem like the typical location for a green roof, the installation could provide environmental and economic benefits. According to research by Michigan State University, green roofs are great at reducing polluting emissions, providing spaces for nature and cooling cities through the water that evaporates (蒸发) from their leaves and by shading surfaces that would otherwise absorb heat.
“While the impact of green plants on buildings has been well documented, much less is known about the effects of them on moving vehicles,” said Tan Chun Liang, a research fellow at National University of Singapore who advises the “Garden on the Move” bus campaign. This bus campaign is part of a three-month study to test whether green plants can help lower the temperature inside the buses and reduce the amount of fuel needed to power the air-conditioning. Liang hopes the research will provide a possible solution for cities to fight against global warming and the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect -- when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas, due to the heat produced and absorbed by industry, traffic and building materials.
To make Singapore a “Garden City,” the government has joint this bus campaign with other green projects such as the Green Mark Scheme which aims for 80% of building to be green by 2030 and Gardens by the Bay, an eco-friendly garden featuring solar-powered “supertrees” and over 1.5 million plants.
【1】Why were green roofs installed on 10 public buses in Singapore?
A.To provide more space for plants to live in.
B.To increase the diversity of species in Singapore.
C.To attract more people to use public transportation.
D.To test green plants’ environmental and economic benefits.

32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Many Chinese students have studied English for approximately ten years, but most of them cannot even speak English correctly or fluently. In my opinion, there are several obstacles that have caused this to happen. The main obstacle is fear! Another is the habit of mentally translating from Chinese to English and then to change these thoughts into spoken words and sentences. Many of these difficulties are caused by the way Chinese people study and learn the language.
We must learn to speak as a child does. When we are learning a second language, we need to remember how we learned our native language. Learning to understand and speak a language is one of the first skills a child develops. How does a child learn the language? He listens for a time and then he tries to repeat the words. Parents give great praise for the smallest effort and slightest improvement. Therefore, the child develops courage and is excited about learning. It takes a long time before he knows anything about grammar, spelling or formal sentence structures.
As for language teachers, they should avoid criticism and be very encouraging and generous with praise. Criticism or pointing out faults too often causes students to lose self-confidence and develop a fear of speaking. The best way to motivate a student is using praise.
The most important aspect of speaking is having good self-esteem. Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. When most Chinese people are asked how their English is, or they are told their English is very good, they immediately respond by saying, "Oh my English is very poor." If you say this to yourself often enough, you will believe it. When someone compliments(称赞) you, just say “thank you”.
