  • 26、   Inspired by a 9-year-old cyclist, Lauren Turner, who can only use one hand, a group of University of Guelph students has won an international award for their inventiona bike brake lever (刹车手柄) that pulls both the front brake and the back brake at the same time.

Lauren Tuner was able to ride her bike, but not as confidently and quickly as her friends.

“She couldn’t use the front brake. She only used the back brake, but the front brake makes you stop twice as fast,” says Micha Wallace, who, with Katie Bell, Anina Sakaguchi and Andrew Morries won second prize in the James Dyson Award for their single-handed bike brake lever.

“Lauren Turner tried the device (装置) first and she used it all last summer. She had no problems. It helped her go faster because she felt more confident in her braking abilities. She felt safer.” says Wallace.

The invention was the fourth-year design project for the four students. They designed, tested and created a prototype (模型) within a four-month period.

When Wallace heard about the James Dyson Award on the news, she and her co-inventors entered their project in the U.K.-based contest, which rewards students designers who create products that improve the way we live. The students collected the runner-up prize£2,000 for them and £500 for their school.

As well, they had a chance to meet James Dyson, a U.K. famous inventor. Praising the students for their invention, Dyson says the single-handed brake lever could improve safety for all cyclists. By using both brakes at once, you could prevent the possibility of flying over the handlebars and ending up with an injury.

The students hope to sell it to a major company. It may be used in other devices that require two hands for operation.

1According to the passage, the James Dyson Award was named after__________.

    A. a well-known place B. a famous inventor

    C. a famous university D. a government leader

2The underlined part “the runner-up prize” in Paragraph 6 means___________.

    A. the second prize B. the rich prize

    C. the top prize D. the prize for runners.

3According to the passage, we know that the brake lever___________.

    A. has already been widely used

    B. can only serve the disabled cyclists

    C. can protect you from any injuries

    D. may have a wide market in the future

  • 27、   Because computer knowledge is important in our society today, many parents believe that the earlier their children begin to use the computer, the better. Accordingly, most children are spending a large amount of time on computers during their preschool years. But is it healthy for preschoolers to use computers? And if so, how can parents decide how much computer time is proper?

Some studies have shown that using computers from an early age has several advantages. Preschoolers who have already attended computer classes come out top in their studies. Also, playing educational games contributes to their language learning and math.

The greatest benefits, though, are gained when preschoolers use computers side by side or when they work with adults. In these situations, preschoolers develop cooperative(合作的)problem-solving skills. They also have the chance to communicate with others, which will reinforce their learning.

Despite many benefits, experts also point out disadvantages of preschool computer use. Preschoolers’  muscles(肌肉)and bones are still developing, but computers and furniture are seldom set up properly for them. "Most parents, says Peter Buckle of the Robens Centre for Health Ergonomics, "seem unaware of the possible dangers of preschoolers sitting for long periods unsupported with necks and wrists(手腕)damaged."

Another problem arises when parents put educational games into computers and believe it’s better for their preschoolers to play these games than sit in front of a TV Educational expert and teacher Jane Healy disagrees. She doesn’t believe there is much difference between the two. "Simply watching a screen is not the same as real mental activity." Healy says. She suggests that reading together, having family discussions, or playing are much more valuable. Besides, Healy also questions whether some popular computer games have educational value. "Some," she says, "may even damage creativity, attention and motivation(动力).

To make the computer valuable for you and your preschoolers, you need to decide on rules and time limits. When purchasing(购买)software for your preschoolers, look for programs that offer many different functions, which can help improve preschoolers creativity and ability to solve problems. Above all, try your best to stay with your preschoolers rather than leaving them alone before the computer.

    Here are some additional tips:

    *Adjust(调整)the computer and furniture for your preschoolers use;

    *Manage your preschoolers’ computer activities;

*Limit the amount of time your preschoolers spend on the computer

1We can learn from Paragraph 2 that___.

A.computers are good for preschoolers’ learning.

B.most preschoolers are familiar with computers.

C.preschoolers shouldn’t use computers too early.

D.preschoolers can learn to use computers easily.

2What does the underlined word "reinforce" in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Protect. B.Strengthen.

    C.Continue. D.Praise.

3Peter Buckle most probably agrees that__.

A.parents have realized the dangers of preschoolers, using computers.

B.using computers has many advantages for preschoolers.

C.improper computer use can lead to health problems.

D.preschoolers are developing too fast nowadays.

4According to Jane Healy, parents should__.

A.forbid their preschoolers to watch TV.

B.join in their preschoolers’ practical activities.

    C.encourage their preschoolers’ creativity.

D.realize that educational computer games are valuable.

    5The author advises parents to__.

A.give their preschoolers enough time to play computer games.

B.place the computer and furniture properly.

C.purchase all kinds of computer games.

D.leave their preschoolers alone when they are using computers.

  • 29、   Do you know the term "tweenager"? It's a slang word being used in the UK to describe children 10-13 years old. They are between junior and the teenage years. Why are they suddenly referred to in this way?

Tweenagers now have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they've ever had before. More and more companies are creating products and services for tweenagers. You can get everything from branded lunchboxes and mobile phone covers, to monthly fan magazines and clothing-it's all about sales.

Most children in the UK today get more pocket money than kids did a decade ago. It is because parents are having fewer children on average than in the past. In addition, the divorce rate in the UK is continually rising and parents spend less time with their children than they used to. So, many parents try to compensate(补偿) by buying presents for them.

And do tweenagers have more freedom? Well, UK children today are very familiar with media and computer. Many have a television, if not a computer, in their bedrooms. They have access to much more information about the world.

They may have experienced a lot in life as well, since 24% of UK kids live in single-parent families. People now say that "Kids are getting older younger". With such sophistication (世故) at such a young age, they are much more fashion conscious and concerned about their image.

In a world of TV programs that promise overnight success and fame at a young age, some people think it's extremely important to look fashionable. Surely none of the above is a good thing, is it? Can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be like adults at such a young age? Are we stealing childhoods in return for profit?

The UK government is certainly concerned, and for that reason has strict laws preventing companies from marketing their products and services at children. So, is there a happy ending to this story?

Companies have just worked out that the older tweenage audience is now looking for something darker and more rebellious. As a result, films such as Twilight are being produced for this older tweenage audience.

1More and more companies pay attention to the tweenagers because________________.

A.tweenagers have a growing interest in lunchboxes and mobile phones

B.parents are more likely to spend money for their kids than before

C.kids receive less pocket money now but have more freedom

D.every kid has a computer or a TV in their bedroom

    2What does paragraph 2 suggest?

A.Kids have a great influence on the market.

B.The products for the kids are of better quality.

C.Kids are more fashionable than other earlier generations.

D.Kids like to buy magazines and clothing most.

3What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean?

A.Children exercise too little to physically healthy.

B.Children look older than they actually should be.

C.Children know more than earlier generations of youngsters knew.

D.Children have more freedom and appear more mature than previous generations.

4What's the main idea of the passage?

A.The companies make use of tweenagers to make money.

B.Young tweenagers are having a positive influence on adult.

C.The market is changing to meet the demand of kids.

D.Darker and more rebellious movies are popular with kids.
