二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   “It’s raining, it’s pouring. The old man is snoring (打鼾). He bumped his head when he went to bed, and he couldn’t get up in the morning.” Why couldn’t the old man in the children’s song get up? (Let’s kindly suppose that he just didn’t want to get up.) This was possibly because in the absence of sunlight, the body was still producing the hormone melatonin (褪黑素), which makes people sleepy.

There are many ways that rainfall affects human behavior. But how much does rain really affect people’s moods and behavior?

In 2008, researchers from the University of Minnesota and Lanzhou University published a paper. They proposed that decreased rainfall was influential in social upheaval (社会动荡) and the downfall of the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties in ancient China. This is thought to be related to reduced rice cultivation.

But how might rain affect social behavior in the modern world? A 2009 New York Times  investigation found that murder rates in New York drop significantly on rainy days. Meanwhile, in Britain, Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones of Greater Manchester police published a study in 2015 detailing an analysis of 6.6 million police records over one decade in Manchester. “The research showed that the heavier the rainfall, the lower the recorded crime,” he said.

Langmead-Jones also found that there is a strong association between heavy rain and relatively few violent crimes recorded including domestic abuse. This might be because heavy rain stops people from going out to buy alcohol and the reduced alcohol consumption results in fewer crimes.

It’s not all good news though. One study in 1997 concluded that the behavior of children can predict oncoming storms — they were observed to exhibit their worst behavior when barometric pressure (气压) fell. Another study in 2012 found that women are much more likely to be affected psychologically by rain and that they report much lower levels of life satisfaction than men on rainy days.

For all the complaints about rain, it does have some characteristics that hold broad appeal. The sound of raindrops can be very comforting and often features in sleep-inducing relaxation apps. The theory behind this is that the pitter-patter of raindrops is a form of “pink noise.” It can decrease brain activity and consequently improves the quality of sleep. So if it’s raining where you are, the best thing to do may be to have a nap.

1The author uses the lyrics of a song in the first paragraph to _______.

A.introduce the interesting song to readers

B.voice his understanding of why the old man couldn’t get up in the morning

C.illustrate one way that wet weather influences human behavior

D.explain why people often get up late on rainy days

2According to Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones, relatively few crimes are recorded on rainy days because _______.

A.people prefer to take a nap at home when it’s raining

B.most people are depressed on rainy days

C.people are too lazy to go out when it’s raining

D.alcohol consumption is reduced due to wet weather

3According to the article, the influences that rainy days have on human behavior include _______.

    decreased grain output

    relatively few criminal records

higher chance of feeling low in spirits

    more possibility of feeling sleepy

    A.①②③ B.①②④

    C.①③④ D.②③④

4According to the last paragraph, what’s the positive impact of rain on human behavior?

A.The sound of raindrops helps people sleep better.

B.On rainy days, all people can get more sleep.

C.It offers a good chance to listen to relaxing music.

D.People feel more satisfied with themselves when it’s raining.

  • 27、School had just started in August when Conner began throwing up for no reason. It wasn’t long before the boy also began suffering terrible headaches. In February a 1.7-inch tumor was found in his brain and Conner was set to begin to receive radiation (放射疗法) treatments. Before treatments start, technicians make a white plastic mask (面罩) to keep patients immovable and protect unaffected parts of the brain while radiation is directed at the tumor.

It’s an unpleasant experience and a frightening time. The doctor Cook decided that the masks could at least be made to look like something fun — maybe Batman or Mickey Mouse. “I started thinking these masks are white and not fun at all for kids,” she told The Greenville News. “I felt like if we could make it a little more fun for them, they might be a little more excited about coming in for the treatment. Because the kids are afraid. While the treatment itself isn’t physically painful, it can cause a lot of anxiety (焦虑). And the treatment is required daily for up to six weeks. “

And the masks really make a difference. “The kids really like them,” Cook said. “It makes what is, let’s face it, a terrible experience, a nice experience because they get to choose something themselves.”

When new children come in for the treatment, Cook finds out what their favorite movies or cartoon characters are. Then she sets about creating the mask by drawing the image she wants onto paper, sticking it with glue, and once it’s dry, she applies the colors using paints. Each child can take the mask home once the treatment ends.

“Coming to the doctor always means fear and pain. I wanted to make it fun,” she said. “The kids really love it. It’s something they enjoy and can relate to. And it fills an interest I have. I get great pleasure from it.”

【1】Why was the plastic mask used according to Paragraph 1?

    A.To check the patient’s brain.

    B.To reduce the patient’s headache.

C.To prevent the patient from throwing up.

D.To protect the patient’s brain during the treatment.

【2】What can we know about the radiation treatment?

A.It can be received at home.

B.It has to be finished in a month.

C.It may make the patients feel worried.

D.It will cause huge physical pain for patients.

【3】What does Cook do to help the children being treated?

A.Offer them some free masks as gifts.

B.Show them their favorite movies or TV shows.

C.Dress them up as cartoon characters.

D.Make the masks more interesting to kids.

【4】What does the author want to show by telling this story?

A.Love can treat the terrible sickness.

B.Kindness can bring warmth and joy.

    C.Health matters to everyone.

    D.Creativity leads to success.

  • 28、   My neighbor Orlando is a Paramedic(急救医士). He and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this sort of “favor war”, where one of us would do something for the other, such as shoveling() their driveway or helping them build a shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another favor.

Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground and I remembered he shoveled my driveway for me last snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks and driveways because it was time to do a favor back. It took a while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I didn’t realize was that Orlando had to work that day too.

Fast forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I shoveled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily he and hi s partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid did not have 10 minutes. He barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbor got to work sooner, the young boy got to live his life.

This isn’t humble brag(吹牛). This is to inform others that even the smallest favors can have the biggest impacts. It wasn’t too much of trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his friends again and live his life.

1What can we know about the writer and Orlando?

A.They once had a conflict. B.They are always ready to help each other.

C.They favor shoveling snow together. D.They signed a favorable agreement.

2Who saved the boy before it was too late?

    A.The writer. B.The boy’s parents.

C.Orlando and his partner. D.Orlando and his wife.

3What does the writer intend to tell us?

A.Never ask for trouble. B.One cannot always be lucky.

C.Don’t lose heart in an emergency. D.No favor is too small.
