二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   In a foreign country, a man visited a local restaurant. He didn't speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable off the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle. Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong, he wondered. Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.

Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture. Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive (冒犯) in another.

The gesture “thumbup” is commonly misinterpreted. In English, it is popularly known as “thumbs up” despite the fact that the action is commonly performed with only one hand. Englishspeaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK” which is the same meaning as O. K.ring gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.

Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardina or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American, British and Australian would use the thumb up to signal hitchhiking to the drivers, this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.

There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun. It is certainty a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.

1What did the man in the first paragraph do wrong?

A.He misunderstood the waiter. B.He didn't realize cultural differences.

C.He ordered something off the menu. D.He made the signal in a rude way.

2What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?

A.Full of admiration. B.Full of aggression.

C.Full of complexity. D.Full of certainty.

3What's the purpose of the passage?

A.To explain the meaning of different gestures.

B.To tell stories about different cultures.

C.To advise us to have an understanding of cultural differences.

D.To persuade people from different countries live in harmony.

  • 27、   Being in the midst of a pandemic lockdown can make people feel worried. But nothing has exemplified this panicky behavior more than stockpile (囤积), specifically toilet paper.

Seemingly transcending (超越) borders and cultures, people from all over the world, including the US,UK and Japan, have been clearing supermarket shelves primarily for this necessity. But what’s the reason for this sudden toilet paper fixation? You can understand panic buying food, but do we really need this much toilet paper?

Steven Taylor, author of the book The Psychology of Pandemics, told the Independent that our toilet paper hoarding is a product of our disgust. During a pandemic, people’s sensitivity to disgust increases, like when you flinch (躲避) if someone nearby sneezes.

“Disgust is like an alarm mechanism (机制) and what better tool for eliminating (消除) disgusting material than toilet paper. I think this is how it became a conditioned symbol of safety,” he said.

Writing for The Conversation, Niki Edwards of The Queensland University of Technology said, “When people hear about the novel coronavirus, they are afraid of losing control. And toilet paper feels like a way to maintain control over hygiene (卫生) and cleanliness.”

Another one of the most obvious reasons behind this toilet paper trend, according to the BBC, is the snowball effect. Due to its noticeable coverage, both in the news and social media, people naturally ask, “Will there be enough toilet paper for my family and me?” This invariably leads to more people following the crowd and buying toilet paper because of their fear of missing out.

“Fear is very easy to spread among people. So when those sorts of things go viral (走红), when you see people around you buying things in a panicky way, it’s going to make you feel more anxious,” wrote American psychologist Baruch Fischhoff for CNBC.

While there are, of course, selfish people who stockpile just because they can, it’s worth keeping things in perspective. Remember, just as countries are cooperating to find a Vaccine, we must cooperate to ensure that everyone has their share of necessities.

1What is the main idea of this text?

A.To discuss people’s different attitudes towards the toilet paper hoarding.

B.To explore the negative effects of the toilet paper hoarding.

C.To criticize those people who hoard toilet paper.

D.To explain why people tend to stockpile toilet paper.

2What kind of feeling does the underlined word “disgust” want to show?

    A.dislike B.comfort

    C.calm D.anxiety

3According to Baruch Fischhoff, what does this toilet paper trend result from?

A.The desire to get rid of disgusting material.

B.The fear of losing control over cleanliness.

C.The frequent reporting on toilet paper.

D.The infectious fear making you feel more anxious.

4What is the author’s attitude towards the toilet paper hoarding?

    A.favorable. B.doubtful.

    C.disapproval. D.neutral.

  • 28、The 3 Best Marvel Films-ranked

It seems that ranking films well is always a tough task. In the hearts of millions of fans, everyone has his own choice. Superhero films are even more so. Recently, The Guardian has chosen three of the most popular Marvel films.

    0.3 Blade (2002)

This film continues the story of an earlier 1998’s Blade and is directed by Guillermo. The story once again concerns the mysterious day walker, played by Wesley Snipes. It is an action film full of high technology and the fighting scenes Guillermo expresses are horribly exciting. Not a typical superhero film, in many ways, but a great one.

    No. 2 Black Panther (2018)

This superb film is an entertaining adventure, with a richer component (成分) of fantasy than the other Marvel films. The character of Black Panther is recognized as one of Marvel’s greatest heroes. It is a big hit across the board. It also employs Rachel Morrison who is MCU’S first woman cinematographer, a photographer who operates a movie camera. Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, has promised to get more women writers and directors on board. So far, the only Marvel female writer is Nicole Perlman for Guardians of the Galaxy.

    NO 1 Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

It is smart, visually exciting and perhaps above all, funny. And it's funny in a way that only Marvel films can be. It suggests that to some degree comedy can be an important part of the drama. Taika Waititi was an inspired choice as director. Hemsworth plays the role of Thor and Cate Blanchett plays Hela, the goddess of death who also happens to be Thor’s half sister.

1Which film is the most popular one according to The Guardian?

    A.Blade . B.Black Panther.

C.Guardians of the Galaxy. D.Thor: Ragnarok.

2Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A.Ranking superhero films is easy.

    B.Bladeis a typical superhero film.

C.Nicole Perlman is the only Marvel female writer so far.

D.Taika Waititi, Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett act in one film.

3What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

    A.To introduce some superhero films.

    B.To advertise for some films.

C.To comment on the Marvels history.

D.To advise people to learn from heroes.

  • 29、How to take notes

Every student knows the importance of taking notes in class. 1 Adults (成年人) need to take notes in meetings or training courses for work. So here are some ways to help you develop this important skill.

♦ Begin with the date and the topic of the class. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget. 2

♦ Focus on the most important points. Trying to write down everything the speaker says will only make you angry. 3

♦ If the speaker uses a PowerPoint, you may not need to copy the slides. Ask if the PowerPoint will be available afterward. If so, you can focus on writing the things the speaker says instead. Or you can take a picture with a phone. 4 If so, print it out so you can write notes on it.

5 This will give you the chance to add any information that you didn’t write down. It’s best to do this as soon as possible, so that you don’t forget anything. This review will also increase your chances of remembering what you wrote.

Note-taking is a useful skill, so it’s important to practice doing it well.

A.Also, the PowerPoint may be available before the class or meeting.

B.Look over your notes again after taking them.

C.It will help you keep your notes organized.

D.Try your best to write down what you want to remember.

E.But the skill of note-taking isn’t only used in school.

    F.Consider different note-taking skills.

G.Instead, listen for the key ideas the person wants to communicate.
