二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Recently, a 1935 letter in which Ernest Hemingway detailed his catch of a 500lb blue marlin(青枪鱼), an adventure that is believed to have partly inspired his novel The Old Man and the Sea, has been sold for28000 (£22000).

The handwritten letter was sent by Hemingway on 8 May to the fishing editor of the Miami Herald, telling in great detail how the author and his friend Henry Strater battled to keep sharks away from the marlin after catching it off the Bahamian island of Bimini.

Nate D Sanders, the auction(拍卖)company which sold the letter, said it documented for the first time in Hemingway's own words not only the size of the marlin, but also the attack by sharks, reflecting the plot of the novel.

The company added that Hemingway's account of the marlin catch differed from other anecdotes(轶事) of it, one of which described Hemingway using a machine gun on the sharks, which is said to have attracted more sharks rather than frightened them away.

The Old Man and the Sea was also inspired by an anecdote told by Hemingway's Cuban friend Carlos Gutierrez. In 1936, Hemingway wrote in a magazine that Carlos had told him about an old fisherman who caught a great marlin alone.

Three years later, Hemingway told his editor Max Perkins that he was planning a short story about the old commercial fisherman who fought the swordfish all alone in his sailing boat. Instead, he ended up writing For Whom the Bell Tolls, not returning to the story about the old fisherman until January 1951. It won him the Pulitzer in 1953, and was specifically mentioned when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954.

1What did the auction company stress when selling the 1935 letter

    A. The style of the writer. B. The history of the letter.

    C. The contents of the letter. D. The popularity of the writer.

2What inspired Hemingway to write The Old Man and The Sea besides his own adventure

    A. Henry Strater's account. B. Carlos Gutierrez's story.

    C. Max Perkins' life experience. D. Nate D Sanders' description.

3Which is the correct order of time for the following facts in the passage?

    1. Hemingway wrote a letter to describe his adventure.

    2. Hemingway caught a big blue marlin.

    3. The letter was sold at auction.

    4. The Old Man and The Sea won the Nobel Prize.

    A. ①③②④ B. ②①④③ C. ②④①③ D. ②③①④

  • 27、When Harrison School District 2 turned to e-learning last spring, they made sure to provide each student with a laptop and the tools needed to succeed at home. But one remaining need in many families was Internet access.

Christine O’Brien, spokesperson for District 2 said, "When you had many people learning and working from home, sometimes there were Internet glitches. We wanted to avoid that and make sure students in our district could have equal chances to learn and that our families could learn from home as well."

O’Brien said that this year they made sure to survey each of their students to see who exactly needed the Internet.

“This year we were really specific about asking whether families had Internet service at home without a phone," she said. They discovered that about a thousand families needed some sort of Internet connection.

And that’s where Altia came into play. A local software company heard there was an Internet shortage for students and it stepped in to see how they could help. Teaming up with local foundations (基金会), they were able to provide a monthly Internet service that allows many people to have Internet access at the same time. Mike Juran, CEO of Altia said; “At Altia we talked to Randy Rocha at District 2 and I just put out an email to friends and people that I knew and that made its way back to Pikes Peak Community Foundation and Norwood Foundation and people spread that around. Within weeks we were able to get something done."

"The community came together and helped us piece this part. We worked so hard as a school district to get those devices into the hands of students but this was a piece that we weren’t ready to do. We hadn’t budgeted (预算) for it, so the community’s coming together to help our families in this way was really truly amazing," said O’Brien.

  • 28、   Most of us maybe consider snakes to be cold, single beings, as uncaring to others of their kind as they are to us. But those ideas are wrong especially when it comes to garter snakes (袜带蛇), a new study says.

These creatures, which appear from the cold plains of Canada to the forests of Costa Rica, have their own preferences about which snakes they hang out with in other words, they have “friends”.

“All animals even snakes need to connect with others,” says Morgan Skinner, the study leader at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. To look into this theory, Skinner thought up a new experiment to find out the personalities and sociability of eastern garter snakes.

The results showed that “like us, they seek out friendship, and they’re particular about whom they make friends with,” says Skinner.

The idea that snakes have close social networks may be surprising, but such relationships are increasingly being found throughout the animal kingdom, from flamingos to bats to elephants. A recent study of bats showed, for example, that bats and humans both have friendships.

Scientists are likely better at discovering friendships among animals now than, say, 30 years ago, partly because many societies are more accepting of such an idea, and because researchers have far better tools for gathering information.

Analyzing social networks in wildlife, such as snakes, “has taken huge jumps in the last few decades,” says study co-author Noam Miller, Skinner’s advisor.

1What is the purpose of the experiment on garter snakes?

A.To prove Skinner’s theory is true.

    B.To surprise Wilfrid Laurier University.

C.To do better research into the habitat of snakes.

D.To study the friendship between animals and humans.

C.seek out friendship D.keep off the forests

  • 29、   They may have text, email, Facebook and Twitter, but young people are still lonelier than any other age group. The Loneliness in New Zealand report, published by Statistics New Zealand, shows under 30s are more likely to feel lonely than older people because loneliness decreases with age.Loneliness and poor mental health were strongly related across all ages. Young people were not as likely to feel lonely because of financial hardship, but among older people, lack of money was a significant influence on loneliness. Women were more likely to feel lonely than men.

Philip Walker, spokesman for the General Social Survey, said because it was relatively new it was hard to know whether loneliness among young people was a new trend. But overseas research has found that levels of loneliness in youth today are growing.

Walker said the finding needed more exploration, including looking at the role of technology and social media. “It could be that people's expectations of connection have gone up, so we expect increased levels of connection.” he said. “While technology like cell phones could help young people stay connected, on the other hand for those who do get bullied, especially bullied online, it's quite isolating. A lot of the time potentially it is a big contributor to loneliness.”

Figures from online dating website Find Someone also confirmed more young people were looking for love. Manager Rick Davies, said younger dating hopefuls were the fastest growing group on the site.

Mr. Davies noted that since the report data was collected in 2010 there had been huge growth in smart phones, which meant people were online even more. He believed online tools, such as Skype, could help people stay connected. “People can keep in touch with a wide range of friends from all over the world much more easily now. It's like you're sitting in your living room having a chat with them.”

Bemardine Reid, operations committee chairwoman for Samaritans, which operates a free helpline, said many of their calls came from people who were lonely. “It might be that they've got some problem, just like all the things people would normally talk to a friend about, but people who are alone lack those normal contacts.” The Statistics New Zealand report also showed people who didn't have face-to-face contact with family and friends were more likely to feel lonely, as were those who lived alone.

1Which of the following may Mr. Walker agree with?

A.High technology may become a reason for loneliness.

B.People shouldn't use the Internet to get to know strangers.

C.It's hard for people to get enough connection online as expected.

D.Social media should play an important role in helping lonely people.

2From the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that .

A.Internet can keep people free from loneliness

B.people chatting a lot online tend to be optimistic

C.people living alone tend to have more connection online

D.people communicating less in the real-world risk loneliness

3It can be inferred from the passage that .

A.Find Someone is a website where you can find old friends

B.without technology, young people would not feel lonely

C.high technology results in the older being lonely

D.those cheated or hurt online tend to feel lonely

4What is the best title of the passage?

A.Loneliness around You B.Young People Online

C.Young but Lonely D.E-times and Young People
