二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The first time I heard about my classmates engaging with social media was in the fourth grade. A few of my friends and some of my classmates had excitedly jump onto platforms like Instagram at such a young age. On the other hand, I hesitated. I only knew the basics, but was foreign to some words on social media.

All throughout middle school, I stuck with the same thinking. And no as a freshman in college, I am looking back and wondering why I have never been naturally interested in social media.

Scanning Instagram, you ought to find dozens of pictures of people in beautiful countries, taking part in exciting activities, and spending time with friends and family, among many other things. The thought of doing this never resonated with me. I respect and understand those who believe using social media allows them to express themselves and share aspects of their lives others. However, I have never had any interest in doing the same. In my eves, family gatherings and friend get-togethers are just as, if not more meaningful when not shared with others.

Most people have experienced feeling insecure and unconfident on social media. Images that are changed represent unrealistic beauty standards that can only be obtained through dangerous ways. Even without using social media, I knew that using apps like Instagram and Facebook would make me embarrassed of all the aspects that make me a unique individual. I never wanted to look at a post on social media and immediately compare myself and my life.

I constantly observe my classmates getting easily distracted (使分心) by social media. While trying to complete their homework, they have a powerful urge to open up Instagram or Facebook to see if there are any new messages. With homework and after-class activities consuming the majority of my day, I cannot wait to finish every task on my to-do list, so I can finally spend time with my family or have some time for myself to relax from my busy day.

A.Social media are popular with students.

    A.waned off

    B.let down

    C.hid from

    D.appealed to

【3】Why do people using social media might feel insecure?

A.They follow other people’s beauty standards totally.

B.Social media change the way they look at themselves.

C.Social media encourage them to be a unique individual

D.They spend more time posting their images on social media.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.A to-do list can stop people using social media.

B.Social media can waste pepole’s valuable time.

C.Spending time with family always enjoys first priority.

D.Students pay more attention to social media than to study.

  • 27、Climate Change Requires the World’s Attention

In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body all that remained of the polar bear was “skin and bones”. An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth’s ecology.

Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the “greenhouse effect”, which has two common meanings: the “natural” greenhouse effect and the “man-made” greenhouse effect. The “natural” greenhouse effect, which helps keep the earth warm enough for people, plants and animals to live on, refers to the fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface as short-wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane (沼气) and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth’s climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the man-made greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly.

There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heat waves causing deaths and economic losses.

Continued greenhouse gas emissions (排放) will result in further warming and long-lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our “carbon footprint” by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because it is all of us that share this planet. So what will you do to help?

1The dead polar bear was mentioned in the first paragraph to _____?

    A.show polar bears are endangered

B.raise the problem of global warming

C.raise the awareness of protecting animals

D.warn people of the damage caused by travelling

2What is causing the rise of Earth’s surface temperature?

    A.Methane. B.Carbon dioxide.

C.Heat from the sun. D.Man-made heat energy.

3The rise of Earth’s surface temperature may result in _____.

A.higher cost of living B.better growth of plants

C.more extreme weather events D.speeding of animal reproduction

4The last paragraph mainly tells us that _____.

A.policies are important to stop carbon dioxide emissions

B.the long-lasting effects of climate change is very serious

C.everyone should take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

D.it is the governments’ duty to control the process of global warming

  • 29、Panic Buying

Shoppers around the world are crazy buying because of fears over the coronavirus(新型冠状病毒), which caused a critical plague in China and even other countries at the beginning of 2020. People in countries such as England, Japan, Singapore and Australia have been emptying supermarket shelves of toilet paper, face masks, hand wash products and dried and canned food. Photos and videos of shoppers in Australia quarreling over the last pack of toilet roll in a supermarket have spread across social media swiftly.

However, governments have advised their citizens that there is no need to “panic buy”. They added that panic buying would only reduce the supply of products needed by patients and medical staff, which could exacerbate the problems the COVID-19 virus is causing. Singapore's prime minister comforted Singaporeans that: “We have enough supplies. There's no need to stock up.” A week after the panic buying fever, things have calmed down and shoppers have gone back to purchasing items in normal quantities.

Psychologists say panic buying is an “unwise” behaviour that is part of a condition called FOMO - the fear of missing out. Dr. Katharina Wittgens said a herd mentality(从众心理) sets in during disasters that causes people to copy the actions of others. People watch the news of items being bought in quantity and immediately rush out to the stores to do the same. She said people were taking on too much the risks of dying from the coronavirus. She said: “Far more people die in car accidents or household accidents per year but we don't panic about these things in the morning before we go to work.”

【1】What made shoppers in different countries crazy buying?

    A.The approach of 2020 New Year’s Day.

B.The shortage of resources and supplies in their nations.

    C.Their concern about the virus.

    D.The discount from supermarkets.

    A.solve

    B.release

    C.worsen

    D.quicken

【3】What is the reason for this behavior according to expert?

A.People tend to follow others’ actions in the period of disaster.

B.People are wiser in making decisions.

C.People think no one needs the supplies.

D.People do not believe what others said.

【4】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

A.People should not panic over the virus.

B.More people die from car accidents.

C.People buy little when they go to the stores.

D.We should panic about the situation.
