  • 28、   I have been receiving so much kindness. It was difficult for an independent girl like me to accept it at first. At times, my financial situation is not the best. But with that comes a great lesson in appreciation, budgeting, and deciding what is and what isn't important.

A few times I've had to put off or even give up things. Because of my scarcity on money, I had to give up a keep-fit exercise, which is something I like to treat myself regularly. When my coach Lisa heard about this, she offered me training at a highly discounted price. At first this made me very uncomfortable. I feared that she would wrongly think that I was going to bargain and of course I wasn't. Instead, I was just being honest about my situation— being short of money. I finally accepted her offer, remembering that I deserve kindness, too.

Another time, I noticed a friend of mine selling his old exercise bike, which was perfect for me, as I was looking to replace my broken one. I told him that I would take it when I had the money, but then life got in the way. When I finally got the time to pick it up, I realized my financial shortcomings again. I asked him if he could hold onto it for one more week, as then I'd have the funds again. He was happy to do this, but instead he insisted on offering me the bike as a gift. Another opportunity presents itself to teach me how to receive with dignity.

I continue to slowly learn how to accept the kindness from others. In fact, the relationship between giving and receiving is closely linked. When you accept the kindness from others with joy, they will feel happy, too.

1How did the author feel at first when she received kindness from others?

    A.Happy. B.Unfair. C.Proud. D.Unacceptable.

2What does the underlined word "scarcity" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Scare. B.Independence. C.Lack. D.Principle.

3What was the author afraid of when Lisa did her a favor?

    A.Being punished. B.Being misunderstood.

C.Accepting her coach's strict training. D.Giving away the secret of her being short of money.

4How did the author get the second-hand exercise bike?

A.She got it for free. B.She paid much money for it.

C.She bought it from her coach. D.She borrowed it from her friend.

  • 29、   Have you ever noticed that your fingertips are wrinkled (起皱的) when you’ve just finished swimming or washing dishes? It seems as if your hands have aged 30 years in a second. But is this an accident? Or is it something that nature has built into our bodies?

“If your finger’s wrinkling up had no use at all, it wouldn’t need to.” Professor Tom Smulders from Newcastle University UK told BBC News. By studying wet fingers closely, Smulders and his partners found that the wrinkles looked a bit like the patterns on the car tire or the bottom of the running shoes. So they made a guess that wrinkles on fingers might be able to help the hand hold things more tightly.

To test this, researchers asked 20 people to pick up marbles (大理石) from water with their hands. But before they started, some of the people had to keep their hands in water for half an hour. The researchers found that the people with wrinkled fingers completed the task faster than those with dry hands. But when they were asked to move dry marbles, all the people performed equally well no matter they had the wrinkled fingers or not. Researchers said our ancestors might not have played with marbles but wrinkled fingers could have made it easier for them to climb around in the wet forests and catch fish from rivers. Similarly, our toes also get wrinkled in water. This may have developed from our ancestors need to run on wet ground.

But the question is if wrinkled fingers are so helpful, why don’t our hands just stay that way all the time? Researchers explained that wrinkling had its disadvantage: wet fingertips are far less sensitive than smooth ones, reducing our sense of touch.

1What does the underlined word “this” in the third paragraph refer to?

A.Whether fingers have wrinkles after they are put in water.

B.Whether wrinkled fingers can hold things more tightly.

C.Why keeping things in water makes them wrinkled.

D.Why wrinkles help hands hold things more tightly.

    2The test shows that _________.

B.dry hands hold dry things more tightly than wrinkled hands do

C.wrinkled hands hold wet things more tightly than dry hands do

D.dry hands hold wet things more tightly than wrinkled hands do

3What might be the disadvantage of wrinkled fingers?

A.They are too sensitive to be touched.

B.They might be more likely to get hurt.

C.They cannot hold things tightly enough.

D.They are not so sensitive as dry fingers.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835-April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the 1 for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and 2 articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his 3 story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into 4 Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned 5 from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he 6 in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its 7 and imprecision. Following these financial setbacks, he filed for  protection  from  his  creditors  via  bankruptcy,  and  with  the  help  of  Henry  Huttleston Rogers 8 overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so.

Twain was born 9 after a visit by Halley’s Comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it, too. He died the day after the comet returned. He 10 himself as the  “greatest American humorist of his age”, and William Faulkner called Twain “the father of  American literature”.
