Since 1927, Time has chosen to profile a person or group and feature them on its front page.1. Here are three of the Time’ magazine’s more unconventional choices:

    “The Computer”, 1982

At the start of the 1980s, home computing was just starting to take off, with companies like Sinclair and Apple releasing consumer-focused machines to the masses. 2– they were mainly only useful for word processing or extremely basic gaming – at the time they were new, exciting and exotic.

“This sweetheart here, this little baby, looks like any ordinary machine, isn’t that so? 3 Comes with new words too: RAM and ROM,” wrote Time.

    “You”, 2006

In the age when sites like YouTube and Facebook were in their new and had not developed very much, Time named those who created and uploaded “user-generated content” onto such websites as its choice of the year.

4, with a writer for The Atlantic later remarking: “Is anyone out there not sick of people ironically listing ‘Time Person of the Year, 2006’ in Twitter bios – a reference to the gimmicky(巧妙手法的) selection of ‘You’ that year? Didn’t think so.”

    “Endangered Earth”, 1989

During a period of heightened awareness of global warming and climate change, 5 This led to an environmental action plan being later published after Time invited a team of environmental experts and policymakers to an environmental conference it organized.

    A. This created chaos

    B. A mess of screws and buttons, a whole heap of plastic.

    C. While the PCs of the early ’80s were primitive compared to today’s

    D. The decision drew mainly confused and negative feedback from the public and media

    E. Time featured Earth as its “Planet of the Year”.

    F. Other than people, objects have made it to front page too.

    G. But it’s not always people that make the front cover.

  • 28、At one time, the inheritance of traditional drama was difficult. People of insight screamed “save drama”. Many celebrities and big names put down their figures and went to the community to carry out public welfare performances of opera, and did everything possible to expand the coverage of drama. In recent years, traditional Chinese culture and art has gained a foothold on short video platforms and attracted a large number of young followers thanks to the explosive growth of the short video industry. Relaxing, emotional and fragmented, these video contents perfectly match the demands of the users. With the application of new technologies such as social communication and immersive experiencing, short video platforms are seeing more users, becoming a shining spot of new Internet media.

  • 29、   When you work out a carbon footprint(碳足迹)a lot of factors are taken into consideration. For example, driving to the grocery store bums a certain amount of fuel, and fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases. But that grocery store is powered by electricity, and its employees probably drive to work, so the store has its own carbon footprint. In addition, the products that the store sells were all shipped there, so that must also be factored into the total carbon footprint. Beyond that, the fruits. Vegetables, and meats that the store sells were all grown or raised on farms-a process that produces methane(甲烷)which has a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than CO. All of those elements must be combined to understand the full carbon footprint of a given activity.

Although adding up one's own carbon footprint can be difficult, online calculators can do some of the work for you, giving a rough estimate(估算)of your carbon footprint based on the size of your household, the efficiency of your machines, how much you drive or fly, what you eat, and how much you recycle

This isn't perfect, but it is a good way to measure your activities so you can know roughly how much CO2 they produce and take steps to reduce your carbon footprint.

Methods of reducing your carbon footprint include driving more efficient vehicles (or making sure that your current vehicles are properly maintained), taking public transportation, using energy efficient machines, building your home with special materials to reduce heating and air conditioning costs. consuming food that doesn't require as much transportation, and eating less meat which has a higher carbon footprint than fruits and vegetables. People and companies can also offset some of their CO2, emissions(排放)by purchasing carbon credits, the money from which can go into projects such as planting trees or investing in renewable energy.

1By giving the example of the grocery store, the author wants to tell us that____

A.driving to the store burns a certain amount of fuel

B.the greenhouse effect of methane is greater than that of CO2

C.the fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases

D.many factors need to be considered when figuring out a carbon footprint

2Which of the following best explains the underlined word 'offset' in the last paragraph?

    A.make up for

    B.make sense of

    C.take control of

    D.catch up with

    3The passage is mainly about____

A.whether it is possible to reduce the carbon footprint

B.what we can do to figure out the carbon footprint

C.how to estimate and reduce the carbon footprint

D.why we should reduce the carbon footprint

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
