26、 Most of us maybe consider snakes to be cold, single beings, as uncaring to others of their kind as they are to us. But those ideas are wrong — especially when it comes to garter snakes (袜带蛇), a new study says.
These creatures, which appear from the cold plains of Canada to the forests of Costa Rica, have their own preferences about which snakes they hang out with — in other words, they have “friends”.
“All animals — even snakes — need to connect with others,” says Morgan Skinner, the study leader at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. To look into this theory, Skinner thought up a new experiment to find out the personalities and sociability of eastern garter snakes.
The results showed that “like us, they seek out friendship, and they’re particular about whom they make friends with,” says Skinner.
The idea that snakes have close social networks may be surprising, but such relationships are increasingly being found throughout the animal kingdom, from flamingos to bats to elephants. A recent study of bats showed, for example, that bats and humans both have friendships.
Scientists are likely better at discovering friendships among animals now than, say, 30 years ago, partly because many societies are more accepting of such an idea, and because researchers have far better tools for gathering information.
Analyzing social networks in wildlife, such as snakes, “has taken huge jumps in the last few decades,” says study co-author Noam Miller, Skinner’s advisor.

27、 You are walking alone down the street. Suddenly, you hear footsteps. Is someone following you? How do you know the footsteps are someone else’s and not your own?
You can tell because your brain has the ability to ignore certain sounds, according to a study from New York University. Because of this, we often ignore our own footsteps. But we may easily hear others’ footsteps.
Scientists tested this on mice. They found that when mice became familiar with the sound of their own footsteps, they developed a “sensory filter (感觉过滤器)”, according to David Schneider, one of the lead authors of the study. This allowed the mice to ignore the sounds of their own footsteps. They could more easily notice the sounds of their environment.
“For mice, this is really important,” Schneider told Science Daily. “They need to listen for a cat getting close to them, even when they’re walking and making noise.”
Our brains don’t just ignore our footsteps. We also ignore some other sounds that we make ourselves, including the sound of eating, breathing heavily and typing on a keyboard. Being able to ignore these unimportant noises lets us focus on more important and dangerous ones. For example, we are quick to notice the sound of a baby crying. So we can rush to make sure they are okay and keep them alive. The same idea applies to humans screaming. When we hear this sound, we can quickly go to help the screaming person.
【1】What help(s) mice ignore the sounds of their own footsteps?
A. The environment. B. Their sensory filters.
C. Cats’ footsteps. D. A study from New York.
【2】What do human brains normally fail to notice?
A. Others’ footsteps. B. Human’s screaming.
C. a baby crying. D. Self-made sounds.
【3】How does ignoring some sounds benefit humans?
A. More important things can be focused on.
B. People can stay calm in face of danger.
C. It’s easy to stay healthy and strong.
D. People tend to do dangerous things.
【4】What can we learn from the text?
A. More studies on human brains are needed.
B. Mice are very helpful in human brain studies.
C. Ignoring certain sounds helps mice survive.
D. Screaming and crying are unimportant noises.
28、 Earlier research had suggested we're best at learning grammar in early childhood. Then we hit a dead end around age 5. It's supposed to be much harder for older kids. The time when people can learn the rules and structure of a language well appears to last until around age 17 or 18. “But that's not so, ”says psychologist(心理学家)Joshua Hartshorne.
Hartshorne asked friends to take an online English grammar test. After completing the test, volunteers answered questions about where they had lived, the languages they had spoken from birth and the age at which they first started learning English. Hartshorne also asked how long they had lived in an English-speaking country. As he had hoped, people shared the test widely online. This let Hartshorne's group study the answers from 669, 498 native and non-native speakers of English. The researchers used statistics to find out when people with different English-speaking experiences reached their top grammar ability.
If people moved to a new country and began speaking English by age 10 to 12, they finally spoke it as well as folks who had learned both English and another language from birth. But both groups scored a little worse than people who spoke English only, the researchers found. The test results showed that around age 17, people's ability to learn grammar took a sharp drop. And those who started learning English after age 10 or 12 never reached the same level of English skillfulness as people who started younger. Why?The researchers think it's because they had fewer years to practice before their skills dropped off at surprise:Language learning did not end at 17. People's English skills kept improving a little until around age 30, the new study found. And this was true among both native speakers and those who learned English as a second language. Still, most language learning happened by age 20, the new study decided.
【1】What age period is best for grammar learning according to earlier research?
A.From 17 to 20. B.From 5 to 12.
C.Before age 5. D.From 20 to 30.
【2】How did Hartshorne get his study statistics?
A.By experimenting in the lab. B.By making an online survey.
C.By studying historical records. D.By collecting earlier study results.
【3】Which of the following agrees with Hartshorne's study results?
A.Language learning needs much practice.
B.Language learning ends at the age of 17.
C.The more languages you learn, the better.
D.It is best to learn language after 20 years old.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.How native speakers learn English?
B.What's the best age to learn a language?
C.What's the best way to learn a foreign language?
D.Why non-native speakers can never master a second language?
29、 Maybe you have just been to the apple garden or maybe you couldn’t help yourself and brought the apples home from the grocery store. 【1】 Follow these easy tips and you’ll have good apples for two or three weeks at least.
Figure out where you’re going to put the apples first . When fully ripe(成熟的), apples become soft. 【2】They give off a chemical called ethylene gas that continues to soften the skin day after day. Keeping apples cold helps to slow the discharge of this gas, so place them in the drawer of the refrigerator to keep them cool.
【3】 They can be stored in a basket in a cool area of your home like a basement. A wire multi-type container is a great option because it allows air to circulate(流通) around the apples while they are being stored. If space is a problem, a wire hanging basket will offer the same benefit without taking up floor space. 【4】 That way, the air will not circulate easily, which can lead the apples to go bad.
To store apples for a long time, you had better wrap each apple lightly in a newspaper and place it in a wire container in a cool area of your home. Spin the apples regularly and remove those that are becoming soft. When considering long-term storage, look for Fuji, Granny Smith and Macintosh apple varieties. 【5】 Apples that are softer will not store as long.
A.Are they the right apples you like to have?
B.Don’t simply place them in a hardboard box.
C.They continue to ripen even after they are picked.
D.Keep them separate from other fruits and vegetables.
E.These types of apples are generally much firmer and have thicker skins.
F.But what if you have too many apples to easily fit in your refrigerator?
G.Either way, you want to keep the apples fresh and delicious as long as possible.
