二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Asthma (哮喘) and allergy (过敏) attacks have increased in the United States, despite the fact that our outdoor air quality has improved. Some researchers think these problems have increased because kids are spending too much time indoors.

When outdoors, we are exposed to different kinds of pollen (花粉) and dust. But when indoors, we are also exposed to allergens (过敏源) . Allergens cause allergies and most people know that allergens can make you sneeze, have runny eyes, and other cold-like symptoms (症状). But allergens can also lead to asthma attacks, which are more serious. Asthma symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, especially during exercise and tightness in the chest. Allergic asthma affects about three million children (8 to 12 percent of all children) and seven million adults in the United States each year!

You can get rid of the allergens from your environment! Most children with asthma are allergic to something, so staying away from the allergen should help control the asthma. If you have asthma or allergies, stay away from animals, remove the teddy bears, rugs and curtains in rooms that you spend a lot of time in. Removal of dusty things can help you breathe more easily. If it's trees and pollen that affect you, air conditioning and air filters(空气过滤器) should help.

And research helps, too! Children whose parents, brothers or sisters have asthma are more likely to develop it themselves. But even though our genes do play some part in whether or not we'll have asthma, researchers hope to make the most progress in fighting the disease by looking at the environmental aspect (方面) of asthma. The hope is that if kids are exposed to fewer allergens early in life, they'll be less likely to develop allergic responses. Asthma research is performed at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases(NIAID).

1What makes asthma and allergy attacks increase in the United States?

A.Poor outdoor air quality. B.Not enough outdoor time.

C.Too much pollen and dust. D.The decrease of people's physical condition.

2What can we know in the second paragraph?

A.Allergens in home environment can affect our health.

B.The number of allergens in the average home has decreased.

C.Asthma symptoms are the same as those of the common cold.

D.Allergens from outdoors are more dangerous than those in our homes.

3What do we know from the passage?

A.Allergies are more serious than asthma.

B.People do not get asthma when they are outdoors.

C.We should stay away from allergens to help control asthma.

D.Children whose parents have asthma are certain to develop it.

4Where can you most probably find this passage?

    A.In a storybook. B.In a news report.

    C.In a travel guide. D.In a health magazine.

  • 27、   JERUSALEM—Israel’s Environmental Protection Ministry asked citizens Wednesday to avoid unnecessary physical activity and stay indoors, as a serious sandstorm struck the Middle East in a thick yellow haze () for a second day with no hope to see things clearly.

The ministry said heavy levels of dust and sand in the air were a threat to cities throughout the country. The ministry’s website advised pregnant women, the elderly and those with heart and respiratory (呼吸的) conditions to stay indoors, and asked schools to keep children indoors.

The emergency service Magen David Adom reported that it has treated more than 300 Israelis suffering from breathing problems, and that hospitals have more respiratory-related patients, including a large number of the elderly and those with asthma and related conditions.

The domestic Israeli airlines Arkia and Israir continued to ground their flights to Eilat because of reduced visibility.

The sandstorm has affected Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, where at least five deaths have been reported.

“There has been nothing that came close to the magnitude of this sandstorm,” said Daniel Rosenfeld, a professor with the Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

“While Israel has experienced a number of sandstorms in the past, they started from the Sinai Desert and the Sahara Desert to the south and were joined by winter windstorms that cleared the air,” he said. In this case, the storm comes from Syria and Iraq to the north and east.

Because the storm is hitting during the summer, at a time of both little wind and severe heat and humidity, forecasters expect the particles to remain in the air throughout the weekend and possibly into next week.

“This is really puzzling,” said Rosenfeld, adding that he and his colleague will conduct research into the origins of the unprecedented (前所未有的) storm. (326 words)

1What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “ground” in Paragraph 4?

    A. add B. reduce

    C. cancel D. fuel

2It can be learned from the text that the sandstorm ________.

    A. happened in winter B. showed no sign of weakening

    C. came from Syria and Iraq to the south D. could clear the air

3How did Rosenfeld feel about the origins of the storm?

    A. confused B. upset

    C. confident D. happy

4Where does the text probably come from?

    A. a novel B. a news story

    C. a geography book D. a travel guide

  • 28、   Attending a live musical performance in a huge sports center with lots of supporters of the musician is exciting. Even in a theatre, a skilled performer can provide a great show. Here in the U.S., a very different kind of performance space is gaining in popularity.

Singer-songwriter Annalise Emerick is getting ready to play a show. It is something she does most nights in bars, and other small spaces across the country. But tonight, the setting is even smaller. Ms. Emerick will play for a few people in Kristina Shulz's home.

Ms. Shulz has been holding such performances in her home for about four years. As many as 30 people have attended past shows. The crowd is usually a mix of family, friends and neighbors. But some strangers might show up, too. The performances are listed on house concert websites. 'We've done rock, we've had blues, we've had pop, folk...pretty much anything...anything we’ll have here. ' she said.

House concerts have become an importance part of Annalise Emerick's earnings. 'I can play a bar for 100 dollars, but I can play a house concert and if there are 50 people and they all paying $20 I’m having a great night. And they're all buying CDs. It’s amazing. '

Ms. Emerick says house concert audiences tend to make more supportive fans. They follow her career, buy her new releases, and go to her shows when she is in town.

'There's just a totally unique experience as opposed to playing like a coffee shop or a bar or something like that where people are usually there, but you don’t always know if they're there for you. '

Charlie Dahan teaches music management courses. He used to organize shows for artists. Mr. Dahan says house concerts can be financially risky for artists.

'The downside for the artists is that most house concerts don't pay guarantees. In fact, most house concerts by law are not allowed to charge admission. Most of them can only do a suggested donation.' On the other hand, he says house concerts can help fill an artist's performance calendar and build a loyal following.

Annalise Emerick says she has played in some homes so often the owners have become close friends. And that's been really nice for her.

1All of the following about the house concerts in Kristina Shulz’s home are true EXCEPT ______.

A.Some strangers might attend the concerts.

B.Many kinds of music have been played in the concerts.

C.The performances are listed on house concert websites.

D.The concerts have become an important part of her income.

2What does “a totally unique experience” refer to?

A.People come just for your music. B.People come to drink coffee.

C.People are paying much for your music. D.People are buying your CDs.

    3In Charlie Dahan’s opinion, house concerts ______.

    A.should charge admission

    B.should do more donations

    C.bring uncertain income

    D.help artists make friends

4Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.The advantages of house concerts B.The popularity of house concerts

C.Ways to get royal fans for artists D.Ways to fill an artist’s calendar

  • 29、   Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be hot, time-consuming and difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when rain turns fields muddy.  “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.

Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get twisted(弯曲的) together or get stuck,”he says. What's more, he notes, "It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”

What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says, “The sloths(树懒)move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid having to walk around the forest floor. "Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.

Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or copy mammals. But he says he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.

Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors (传感器) and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs nutritional support. And adding a third “hand”could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.

1What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?

A.They took up too much space.

B.They made the farming process slow.

C.They had difficulty exploring in fields.

D.They caused certain damage to crops.

2What does Jonathan Rogers think about most farm robots?

A.They take much time to make.

B.They get out of date more easily.

C.They depend too much on people.

D.They get used to the environment slowly.

3What attracts Mark Spong most about Tarzan?

A.Its strong wings. B.Its low cost

C.Its creative design D.Its powerful engine.

4How did Jonathan Rogers feel about Tarzan’s future?

    A.It could be found everywhere.

B.It could be put into more practical uses.

C.It could be used to do all the farm work.

D.It could be popular with working people in cities.
