二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself , “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me”. No one could have had a more active old age.

She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it” she said.

  • 27、Imagine you went to a restaurant with a date: had a burger, paid with a credit card, and left. The next time you go there, the waiter or waitress, armed with your profile data, greets you with, “Hey Joe, how are you? Mary is over there in the seat you sat in last time. Would you like to join her for dinner again?” Then you find out that your burger has been cooked and your drink is on the table. Forget the fact that you are with another date and are on a diet that doesn’t include burgers. Sound a little bizarre? To some, this is restaurant equivalent of the Internet. The Net’s ability to profile you through your visits to and interactions at websites provides marketers with an enormous amount of data on you—some of which you may not want them to have.

Are you aware that almost every time you access a website you get a “cookie”? Unfortunately, it’s not the Mrs. Reid’s type. A cookie on the Internet is a computer code sent by the site to your computer—usually without your knowledge. During the entire period of time that you are at the site, the cookie is collecting information about your interaction, including where you visit, how long you stay there, how frequently you return to certain pages, and even your electronic address. Fill out a survey to collect free information or samples and marketers know even more about you—like your name, address, and any other information you provide. While this may sound scary enough, cookies aren’t even the latest in technology. A new system called I-librarian Alexa—named for the legendary third century B.C. library in Alexandria, Egypt- does even more. While cookies track what you are doing at one site, Alexa collects data on all your Web activity, such as which sites you visit next, how long you stay there, whether you click on ads, etc. All this information is available to markets, who use it to market more effectively to you. Not only do you not get paid for providing the information, you probably don’t even know that you are giving it.

【1】In the restaurant story, the author may most probably think the waiter or waitress to be ________.

    A.considerate

    B.well-mannered

    C.annoying

    D.incredible

【2】The author makes up the restaurant story in order to ________.

A.show the good service offered in some Web restaurants

B.criticize some restaurants for too considerate service

C.show the Internet s ability to collect data on you

D.prove the great power of the Internet

【3】What can be learned about “Alexa” from the second paragraph?

A.Alexa is named after an ancient hero in Egypt.

    B.Alexa is installed in libraries.

C.Alexa can collect all the necessary data on you.

D.Alexa can provide more data for marketers than a cookies.

【4】Which of the following words can best reflect the authors’ attitude to cookies and Alexa?

    A.Critical.

    B.Suspicious.

    C.Objective.

    D.Optimistic.

  • 28、   “What's your 'Thing of the Day'?” I asked my fourteen-year-old son as he got a piece of potato onto his plate. This is a question our four kids and whichever friends are staying for supper expect to be asked each evening at suppertime. Usually, it's followed with, “Uhh... Umm... We had pizza for lunch.” And then I have to refuse the response and ask for something meaningful—either something he learned or something that happened with his friends.

But, this day, my son surprised me as he went into great detail about how he had been honestly wronged by a couple of classmates and laughed at in front of the class. I asked more questions and learned that the teachers knew the situation clearly. It had been dealt with as much as the teachers and staff were able to. It was really just a matter of kids being mean and deciding to treat someone unfairly.

I thought about the situation all night. I vacillated between contacting the teachers, contacting the parents of the classmates, and not doing anything since the story had been told to me in a matter-of-fact way—not overly excitedly.

I waited until the next day after school. On the car ride home, I questioned my son what about today after yesterday's situation. My son was honestly surprised that I brought it up again. “What? No, it's over, Mom. They're my friends. They were just being stupid. They apologized. Forgive and forget, you know? We're all good.”

I was worried that perhaps he was trying to hide his concern or sadness about the thing. But as I watched him over the next days and weeks, everything seemed “normal”. Wouldn't it be great if everyone could live the “forgive and forget” way of life?

【1】How are children's usual answers to the author's daily question?

    A.Serious.

    B.Interesting.

    C.Valuable.

    D.Meaningless.

【2】Why was the author sleepless all night?

A.Her son was made fun of unkindly.

B.Her son invited his friends to dinner.

C.Her son was punished by his teacher.

D.Her son lied to her about his mistake.

【3】What does the underlined word “vacillated” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Talked to oneself.

    B.Made preparations.

    C.Was undecided.

    D.Gave suggestions.

【4】What did the author learn from her son's experience?

A.It is good to forgive and forget.

B.It is necessary to watch her son.

C.It is difficult to understand children.

D.It is surprising for her son to apologize.

  • 29、Riding on an exercise bike at home may keep you in physical shape, but it can get pretty boring after a while. Aaron Puzey had been on his exercise bike for half an hour a day for years when he decided to look for a way to make it a bit more fun.

With virtual reality technology widely available nowadays, all he needed to do was find a way of applying it to his needs. So he set out to build an app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset(头戴式视图器) which would allow him to hook it up to Google Street view and make it seem like he's cycling through different real-life locations.

Building the app to download the 3D data from Street View and make it viewable in the VR headset was the toughest part of his project. Other than that, all he needed to do was tape a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike. Although the quality of the images sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, leaving complex scenes like trees looking like a mess, Aaron has been having a lot of fun on his journey.

Aaron's project is obviously no substitute(替代品) for real outdoor cycling as it lacks things like the wind blowing in your face or the pain of battling an uphill climb, but it has given him a goal, as well as the chance to take in the beauty of places he might have otherwise never seen. It definitely beats staring at a wall or at the TV for 30 minutes, anyway.

Obviously, Aaron's set up the officially allows him to ride a bike anywhere around the world. He says he has always wanted to see Japan, so once his ride comes to an end, he plans to start another one across the Land of the Rising Sun.

【1】Why did Aaron Puzey build the app?

A.To invent a new kind of bicycle

    B.To participate in a competition.

C.To satisfy the needs of the public.

D.To add fun to his exercise bike routine

【2】Which of the following can best describe Aaron Puxey?

    A.Creative.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Funny.

    D.Boring.

【3】What was the challenge for Puzey in his project?

A.Changing the 3D data into pictures.

B.Downloading the software from the Internet.

C.Making the 3D data viewable in the headset.

D.Taping a Bluetooth monitor lo his exercise bike.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.Cycling Across the World at Home

B.The Lazy Man and His Crazy Idea

C.A New Way of Cycling Without Effort

D.A Substitute for Real Outdoor Cycling
