  • 26、Hidden gardens in London

From nature reserves to community spaces, we’ve dug up some of London’s most secret gardens, where you’ll find pockets of splendid nature and forget about all your worries.

    Queen’s Wood

Across the road from the better-known Highgate Wood, there is something more magical and quiet about Queen’s Wood— witness its hilly pathways through the mountain ash and cherry trees. It might be only a few hundred metres from Highgate tube station, but native bluebells and countless species of small animals make this a wonderful retreat.

    Phoenix Garden

Behind Charing Cross Road, this is a super spot for a leafy lunchtime break. Look out for frogs and sparrows, which are thriving thanks to an enthusiastic conservation initiative. The garden closed last autumn for redevelopment work but has reopened in time to take advantage of our long-awaited spell of improved weather.

    Postman’s Park

A short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral lies one of London’s most touching monuments: George Frederic Watts’s Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. Within the quiet Postman’s Park, nestled beneath a roof, are just over 50 ceramic plaques(牌匾), each honoring the memory of an ordinary person who lost their life trying to save others.

    Red Cross Garden

Originally intended to give Southwark children a space to play, this Victorian garden has been restored to its original design, complete with pond, cottage, bandstand and formal borders. While relaxing in the restored bandstand, it’s hard to imagine the view back in 1887 when it was surrounded by workhouses and factories.

  • 27、There’ s no place like home. It’ s the place where we’ re surrounded by our possessions and creature comforts. We purchase things to give our homes a personal touch. And one thing we’re buying more of is houseplants. But are these “living” additions to our homes good for us and the environment?

Houseplants, also known as pot plants, add a natural touch and they have the ability to brighten up a room on a budget. The Royal Horticultural Society found that nearly 72% of adults in the UK had a houseplant in their home, with this figure rising to 80% of 16-24 year olds. A fifth of owners also said they use plants in the home to boost their health and well-being. And average sales last year were up on the previous year.

It seems millennials (千禧代) are driving the growth in the sales of houseplants. More young people are living in flats without a garden. 24-year-old Daisy Hale said “being able to care for something but not having too much commitment—I guess that’s a classic millennial line—is ideal for my lifestyle.”

From hanging baskets, to cacti (仙人掌) and succulent ferns, the choice of vegetation is endless. They are easy to care for, and there have been unproven claims that they improve the air quality in our home. But whatever their benefits, there are now concerns that they might not be so good for the environment. Some are bought online and shipped from overseas. Fay Kenworthy, co-founder of PlantSwap, a community activity that encourages people to trade plants locally, said “this could defeat many local plants.”

But botanist James Wong argues that home delivery has less of an environmental impact than multiple trips to the garden center in a car. Although he’ s not too concerned about the environmental impact, others are worried about the plastic pots they are in and the type of peat (泥炭) that some of them are grown in. However, a sustainable approach to buying them may be the best way forward if we want to introduce some natural greenery into our homes.

【1】What is the benefit of a houseplant?

A.A houseplant can cure people of many diseases.

B.A houseplant is ideal for millennials’ career.

C.A houseplant improve the water quality in our home.

D.A houseplant can beautify a room with little money.

【2】Which of the following may Fay Kenworthy agree with?

A.The choice of vegetation is endless.

    B.People should buy local plants.

C.It’s best to buy plants online.

D.Houseplants are hard to care for.

【3】Where is the passage probably from?

    A.A fashion magazine.

    B.A tour brochure.

    C.A scientific fiction.

    D.A history book.

    A.Negative.

    B.Neutral.

    C.Positive.

    D.Not mentioned.

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Natural Greenery

    C.Houseplants: Good or Bad?

    D.Hanging Baskets or a Garden?

  • 29、   Nzulezo in Jomoro district of western Ghana has coexisted with nature for many centuries. Here, all of life’s chores (家常杂务) from the preparation of meals to children going to school take place on water.

The first people in Nzulezo came from Mali in the 15th century. Many centuries after, people in Nzulezo still live in wooden buildings. Every family in modern Nzulezo has its own street, and every street is named after the head of that family. Every family member also owns a boat. It’s the only way of travelling there.

People in Nzulezo have kept their traditional way of living for many centuries, but they have introduced certain modern comforts such as clectricity, which means they no longer depend on kerosene (煤油) and lanterns to power up.

They also hope to build a 24-hour healthcare center. The locals have to travel five kilometers by boat to see a doctor.

Being on water also makes it hard to find teachers to teach Nzulezo children. Cudjoe, a teacher in Nzulezo, says that there aren’t enough payments to make teachers stay. Though there are glaring challenges, some of Cudjoe’s students have left Nzulezo for further education, including university, and they are thriving, he says. “I have a lady, she’s now a nurse, and I have a man who is now in university. Plenty of them are now in senior high outside the village. They are doing well.”

But while people in Nzulezo are open to satisfying some modern needs, they still feel strongly about keeping their traditional lifestyle. “Our life here is very comfortable for us. We cook here, we enjoy ourselves, we entertain ourselves, the children also. We prefer to stay,” says a local elder, John Arthur.

1What does Paragraph 2 focus on?

A.The rise and fall of Nzulezo. B.Nzulezo’s dependence on boats.

C.The origin of streets in Nzulezo. D.Nzulezo’s traditional way of living.

2What does the underlined word “thriving” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Suffering. B.Succeeding.

    C.Returning. D.Researching.

3Which would be the best title for the passage?

A.Village over the River Coming to Shore

B.Nzulezo Giving Way to Modern Comforts

C.Floating Village Balancing Traditions in Modern World

D.Nzulezo Drawing Attention to Traditional Floating Life
