二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A campaign (活动)is being launched to encourage children to give up 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors.

The newly formed Wild Network — a cooperation of nearly 400 organisations --- is trying to attract teenagers away from television and computer screen and into fields, woods and parks. Organisers say that it is the UK's biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and that it could help improve fitness, mental(精神的)health and general well  being. A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, will announce the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK from Friday. It looks at the increasingly weak link between children and nature.

Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said: "The sad truth is that kids have lost touch with nature. Time spent outdoors is down, activity areas and levels are falling strongly and the ability to identify common species (物种)has been lost."

Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include camping or racing and observing autumn colour on trees and so on. From January, the network will aim to make suggestions to politicians on how government can do more to get children muddy (沾满泥污的)and bright¬-eyed.

This is not the first time the message of less screen, more play has been brought up. Children in the 1980s were asked to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don't You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to "switch off your TV set, and do something less boring instead".

1The purpose of the campaign is to call on kids____________.

A.to love animals B.to play outdoors

C.to give up screens D.to protect nature

2What may make Andy Simpson sad?

A.Kids' disability to name some creatures.

B.The falling duration of Rids' vacations.

C.Strict rules on kids' outdoor activities.

    D.The disappearance of common species.

3What does the network appeal to the government to do?

A.Reconnect kids with nature. B.Provide kids with more mud.

C.Take measures to protect kids. D.Pay attention to eye protection.

4Why does the author mention the BBC TV series?

A.To tell the development of BBC TV series.

B.To prove the recognition of his suggestion.

C.To show the TV series caused confusion.

D.To compare present TV series with old ones.

  • 27、In elementary school, Glenn Cameron was very aware of the challenges faced by his friend, Roger, who had lost a hand. Now he has built an artificial helper for him.

The robotic hand is called “Dexi”. Each of its fingers can move independently. The strength and speed of the hand’s “muscles” can be controlled. He’s also created a digital version of this hand, which responds on a computer screen. Through a special headset, the system takes electrical signals from a human brain, sends them to a computer, and then the computer “tells” the hand what to do. For example, to make the hand close, you “see” a fist in your head.

In fact, Cameron’s first robotic hand was 3D printed online. Realizing the hand was too limited, he decided to build his own. It was quite a challenge, but his new version was better. It was also cheap, compared to many other robotic hand projects. Cameron says designing and building the hand was hard, but he went on. Then came the one Roger is using.

Cameron is working on a hand that can actually be used by a person who’s lost a hand at present. He says the new hand will be simpler, because there won’t be as much space. To make up for this, he is adding a mini camera and trying to make the hand smarter.

Cameron encourages young people who think they might want to do something demanding and similar, “You just begin working towards it. Take one little step at a time, purposeful and steadfast, sooner or later you’re going to get to the place you long for.”

【1】Which version of the artificial hand does Dexi belong to?

    A.The first.

    B.The third.

    C.The second.

    D.The fourth.

【2】How could a user of the digital version of Dexi control the robotic hand?

    A.By operating the computer.

B.By sending electrical signals to the hand.

    C.By thinking.

    D.By speaking.

【3】Which saying do Cameron’s words convey?

A.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

B.All that glitters is not gold.

C.All things are difficult before they are easy.

    D.Well begun is half done.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A robotic helper for the disabled.

    B.Cameron’s story of success.

C.The latest designs of artificial intelligence hands.

    D.Cameron’s brain-controlled robotic hands.

  • 29、   It was New Year’s night. An aged man was standing at a window. Few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the age leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets.

The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrances of the two roads. One leading to a peaceful, sunny place covered with flowers and fruits; the other leading to a deep dark cave which was endless. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “Oh youth, return! Oh, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life.” But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.

He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness, and these were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were then honored and happy on that New Year’s night.

The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way with shame and grief. He dared no longer to look towards the heaven where his parents lived. He burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!” And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults were real. He had not yet entered the deep dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

【1】Which of the following words can best describe the aged man?

    A.Merciful.

    B.Foolish.

    C.Regretful.

    D.Fortunate.

Have you ever been involved in animal rescue? This is what happened to the Winter the dolphin. Winter was found off the coast of Florida in December of 2005. She was just a few months old, alone, and caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap were wrapped tightly around her body.

The fisherman who found her called for help, and the rescue team soon arrived. The ropes had cut off the blood circulation to her tail. She was badly hurt. Her rescuers didn't think she would survive. Hoping for a miracle and racing against time to save her, the rescuers transferred her to the ClearwaterMarine Aquarium in Florida.

The doctors managed to save Winter, but sadly, not her tail. He tail flukes were too damaged and had to be removed so Winter could live.

The little dolphin Winter survived against all odds, but she would never be able to swim normally without a tail. Thankfully the story doesn't end here. Winter was able to swim, but not very well. Because she didn't have a tail. She moved her body in a side-to-side motion like a shark. But doctors at the aquarium were worried that unconventional moment would hurt her spine.

Kevin Carroll heard Winter's story and for thought, he would could help. He is a specialist who designs and provides prostheses for people. If he could help people, why not help a dolphin? He started working with Winter and came up with a solution for the new fluke and tail section

Kevin designed a stretchy sleeve to fit winter's body and protect her skin. Then a tail made of silicone and plastic was made to tightly fit over the sleeve. Now winter can swim like other dolphins. And she is a great inspiration to people who struggle with their own injuries.
