26、 Just over a decade into the 21st century, women’s progress can be celebrated across a range of fields. They hold the highest political offices from Thailand to Brazil, Costa Rica to Australia. A woman holds the top spot at the International Monetary Fund; another won the Nobel Prize in economics. Self-made billionaires in Beijing, tech innovators in Silicon Valley, pioneering justices in Ghana—in these and countless other areas, women are leaving their mark.
But hold the applause In Saudi Arabia, women aren’t allowed to drive. In Pakistan, 1,000 women die in honor killings every year. In the developed world, women lag behind men in pay and political power. The poverty rate among women in the U.S. rose to 14.5% last year.
To measure the state of women’s progress, Newsweek ranked 165 countries, looking at five areas that affect women’s lives: treatment under the law, workforce participation, political power, and access to education and health care. Analyzing data from the United Nations and the World Economic Forum, among others, and consulting with experts and academics, we measured 28 factors to come up with our rankings.
Countries with the highest scores tend to be clustered in the West, where gender discrimination is against the law, and equal rights are constitutionally enshrined (神圣化). But there were some surprises. Some otherwise high-ranking countries had relatively low scores for political representation. Canada ranked third overall but 26th in power, behind countries such as Cuba and Burundi. Does this suggest that a woman in a nation’s top office translates to better lives for women in general? Not exactly. “Trying to quantify or measure the impact of women in politics is hard because in very few countries have there been enough women in politics to make a difference,” says Anne-Marie Goetz, peace and security adviser for U.N. Women.
Certain conclusions are nonetheless clear. For one thing, our index backs up a simple but profound statement made by Hillary Clinton at the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. “When we liberate the economic potential of women, we elevate the economic performance of communities, nations, and the world,” she said. “There’s a stimulative effect that kicks in when women have greater access to jobs and the economic lives of our countries: Greater political stability. Fewer military conflicts More food. More educational opportunity for children. By harnessing (利用) the economic potential of all women, we boost opportunity for all people.”
【1】What does the author think about women’s progress so far?
A.It still leaves much to be desired. B.It is too remarkable to be measured.
C.It has greatly changed women’s fate. D.It is achieved through hard struggle.
【2】In what countries have women made the greatest progress?
A.Where women hold key posts in government.
B.Where women’s rights are protected by law.
C.Where women’s participation in management is high.
D.Where women enjoy better education and health care.
【3】What does Anne-Marie Goetz think of a woman being in a nation’s top office?
A.It does not necessarily raise women’s political awareness.
B.It does not guarantee a better life for the nation’s women.
C.It enhances women’s status.
D.It boosts women’s confidence.
【4】What does Hillary Clinton suggest we do to make the world a better place?
A.Give women more political power. B.Stimulate women’s creativity.
C.Allow women access to education D.Tap women’s economic potential.
27、 Are animal brains too simple for thoughts and choices? Stories about animal kindness have really changed my point of view. In fact, some stories are amazing, especially when animals are meeting with people. Here are two stories that interest me:
James, a wildlife writer, told a story about how an African woman had placed her baby in the shade of a tree while she was working. An elephant group walked by and saw the baby. Several elephants pulled leafy branches from the tree and covered the sleeping baby. Flies can be a problem in Africa and the branches protected the baby from the flies. The elephants were so gentle and quiet that they did not even wake up the baby. Then the elephants walked away.
An English magazine offers another story. Bill, the cat, stayed at home while its master was away on a trip, but the man was injured in a railway accident and died a few days later in a hospital. At the funeral(葬礼), the man's brother was surprised to see that Bill was there. The faithful cat had traveled a long way to the hospital, looked at the coffin(棺材), and then sadly returned home.
Humans are only one part of the earth. The beautiful flowers are our sisters; the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The sky and mountains, the cows and men, all belong to the same family. These stories, I hope, will inspire more people to treat animals as our friends rather than pets or our next meal.
【1】What did the author used to believe?
A.People meet with animals often.
B.Animal brains are too simple to make choices.
C.We should change our old views about animals.
D.Animal stories have many amazing facts.
【2】What did the elephants do when they saw the baby?
A.They woke up the baby by pulling branches.
B.They helped to protect it from the flies.
C.They walked by doing nothing.
D.They ate some branches and walked away.
【3】Why does the author write this passage?
A.He wants to make animals become our sisters and brothers.
B.He wants to inspire more people to treat animals as friends.
C.He wants to warn people against having more food or pets.
D.He wants to make the earth a whole family.
28、 You have the ability to decide if you are happy or not. Happiness is a choice. You can't on someone else to make you happy.
You can choose your emotions(情感). True happiness comes from within; it can't be forced by outside forces. So how do you choose happiness? The same way you choose a new pair of shoes. When you're buying new shoes, you choose a pair that you like and feel good. You wouldn't buy a pair of shoes that you don’t like or that don't fit well, right? You choose it because that's what you want to experience in your life. So why do we keep choosing emotions and feelings that don’t make us feel good?
Choosing to be after you realize your anger has shown up can be beneficial. We choose our feelings; no one can do that for us. If we let others influence our emotions, we are giving them power over us. When others cause us anger or pain, we are giving them our power.
We need to keep in check our feelings and not react immediately to what is thrown at us. We need to think our actions out instead of just reacting to what someone says or does.
Remember that we can always choose happiness. At first it will be difficult to just change your thoughts and feelings from anger, self-doubt, or fear to joy and happiness. But it is only a thought away. Don’t be lost in what happens to you unnecessarily but realize what is causing you to feel that way. Realize that thoughts, feelings and emotions can change. Then move on and choose to be happy.
【1】How did the author develop her idea in Paragraph 2?
A.By making a comparison. B.By referring to a social problem.
C.By giving reasons. D.By describing her own experience.
【2】What does it mean if we choose to be happy rather than angry?
A.We're making others happy B.We're better controlling our feelings.
C.We're getting to know our emotions. D.We’re sharing power with others.
【3】Which of the following best explains “keep in check” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.Express. B.Set down. C.Improve. D.Hold back.
【4】What's the main idea of the text?
A.How to choose our feelings. B.Where to find happiness.
C.Making decisions to be cheerful. D.Thinking twice before actions.
29、 Elephants have impressed us for centuries. They are big, clever, and sociable. But what if someone told you that they may also hold the key to fighting cancer (癌症)?
People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer, even though they have lifespans (寿命) that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors (肿瘤) from developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an antitumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, which was recently published on the online science network BioRxiv, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage. This lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell (细胞) has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with long lifespans like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice do. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This_phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto's paradox”. Evolutionary (进化的) biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance (抵抗) as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers from spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer, ” said Joshua Schiffman, an oncologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US.
“It's up to us to learn how different animals tackle (处理) the problem so we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
【1】Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?
A. They have a large body size.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They carry many genes that keep tumors from developing.
【2】According to Dr. Vincent Lynch, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?
A. A risk of deadly tumors. B. Human behavior.
C. Extreme weather. D. Cells killing themselves.
【3】What does the underlined expression “This phenomenon” in the sixth paragraph refer to?
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
C. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they have.
D. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones do.
【4】We can conclude from the last three paragraphs that ________.
A. humans are expected to stop cancer in the near future
B. depending on nature is not enough to fight against cancer
C. this new treatment is more effective than the present ones
D. the TP53 genes have proven useful in stopping cancer in mice
