二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   As most people know, in the past Chinese women had no right to receive formal education. 1 One piece of evidence is Nüshu — literally “female script” — a written language only used by women.

A Nüshu museum opened in Puwei Island, Jiangyong county, Hunan province in May 2007. This beautiful island was home to many famous Nüshu authors. This year, according to Xinhua, many tourists visited the museum to appreciate the unique culture of Nüshu.

Known as “the world’s only surviving characters simply for women”, this slim script was developed from standard written Chinese. Centuries ago, Nüshu was taught to girls by elderly women in their homes. During village gatherings, women would use the characters to write poems or lyrics. 2

Worried that this ancient culture will soon disappear, Zhao Liming, a professor at Tsinghua University, started a project in 2017, hoping to keep Nüshu alive. 3 Designed by Talkmate, a Beijing-based online language education platform, its purpose is to teach Nüshu to more people.

4 For example, people often misjudge the characters as “the symbols of some secret cult (邪教)”. The truth is that many old poems written in Nüshu were created by women who wanted to express the difficulties they faced, and how they made it through those hardships. Zhao hopes the app will help people look past these old rumors.

“The words were full of encouragement and positive energy, and showed an uncommon open-mindedness among women at the time,” Zhao said.

Ji Xianlin, the late linguist (语言学家), once wrote that Nüshu is a feminist (女权主义者) symbol, since “it was created by talented women deprived (剥夺) of the right to education.” 5

    A. Many rumors were spread about Nüshu.

    B. The project has made a great achievement.

    C. But this doesn’t mean they made no efforts to learn.

    D. One of the project’s biggest achievements is an app.

    E. In this case men couldn’t understand their meanings.

    F. This might be why the ancient script still has value in modern times.

    G. This way they expressed the feelings they usually kept hidden from men.

  • 27、John Keats was an English poet, whose poetry described the beauty of the natural world and art as the vehicle for his poetic imagination. Regarded as one of the English language’s most naturally gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagination, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and great interest brought him much success. Besides, his own life situation made a great difference to his poetry.

Growing up as a young kid in London in a lower, middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to public school in Enfield, near his home. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as a positive boy who liked playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing away due to illness, he began to view life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.

At around the age of 16, John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his love for literature had taken too much of his time, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Edmund Spenser. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume (册) of poetry that would be published, but was attacked sharply in Blackwood’s Magazine. However, it didn’t stop him.

John Keats’ next work to be published was Endymion, which he wrote in 1817 and was published in May 1818. The story tells a boy who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him to an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, he wrote Isabella. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all he learned. However, an attack of tuberculosis (肺结核) while visiting Italy kept him from his work and took his life in 1821.

  • 29、   For its critics, the arrival of the London Underground marked the moment the capital got into a messy state. The idea of an underground train had first been formed in the 1840s and one of the leading advocates was Londoner Charles Pearson, but work did not begin on what became the Metropolitan Railway until 1860.

What critics called “the Drain” was not universally popular. Some warned that the tunnels (隧道) would fall apart under the weight of the houses above; others thought an underground railway so terrible that criminals should be forced to take round trips. And the construction work angered the locals. “London would lose its charm forever with this ugly project,” one said.

But by January 1863, the first trains were ready to roll. On Friday 9 January, a special train packed with politicians made the first journey—though the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, refused to join then, explaining that at 78, he wanted to spend as much time above ground as possible. All went well, and the next day, Saturday 10 January, it opened to the public.

To general astonishment, the capital’s new Underground proved a great success. On that first day alone, 38,000 people walked deep down into the earth to ride between Farringdon Street and Bishop’s Road, Paddington. The carriages were divided into three classes and lit by gas; as one pleasantly surprised passenger put it, they were “so large that a man who is six feet tall may stand up straight with his hat on”.

“For the first time in the history of the world,” said The Daily News, “men can travel in pleasant carriages, and with great comfort, lower down than gas pipes and water pipes.”

    1What did Charles Pearson do?

    A.He designed the Metropolitan Railway.

B.He showed his dissatisfaction with London.

C.He built a part of the London Underground.

D.He supported building the London Underground.

2Why were people against the London Underground in the beginning?

A.Criminals did most of the construction work.

B.It provided single trips instead of return trips.

C.It was too new to be readily accepted by the public.

D.Lots of accidents happened in tunnels universally.

3How was the politicians’ underground ride in 1863?

A.It was smooth. B.It was lots of fun.

C.It was quite frightening. D.It was totally disorganized.

4What was the right description of the first underground train?

A.Its height was exactly six feet.

B.Its lights were powered by electricity.

C.Its floors had lots of gas pipes and water pipes.

D.Its carriages were more comfortable than expected.

When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift and won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.

“Congratulations," said his father. His mother gave him a hug, even though he was wet.

A week later, it was time for another swim meet and Mike decided to eat the same ice cream. He thought that it was his luck ice cream and that it might help him win again.

He took first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. Since then, Mike has decided to have the same ice cream before every swim meet and has always won.
