26、Almost everyone has heard the expression “the calm before the storm.” It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.
British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop.
Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid(湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and fierce winds.
So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display(展示) of nature's temper (脾气).

27、If you’ve been in public in the past year or so, chances are you’ve noticed someone breaking dining etiquette (礼仪) that would seem second-nature to any adult. Why does our dining etiquette seem to be at the lowest point of all time right now?
“Overall, there is much less feeling about the common good, which means caring about your neighbor—whether at home or in a restaurant,” said Steven, who writes articles for USA Today.
Take the use of cellphone at the table for example. While a 2015 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 38 percent of those surveyed thought it was acceptable to use their phones while dining out, the increasing number of cellphone bans in restaurants shows that restaurants aren’t putting up with it.
However, some see the growing use of cellphones as a sign that manners change alongside our society.
“Manners change,” said the writer behind a food site The Takeout. “What we consider improper isn’t set in stone.” She points out the other “rules” that have since become outdated nowadays, like saying “Sir” and “Ma’am” as proof of this change.
Yes, traditional manners are yet another thing being redefined by youth. “Younger people are growing up in a world with more flexible rules, and this spreads to the dining table,” said Daniel Levine, director of global trends consultancy The Avant-Guide Institute.
Whether you prefer high-end restaurants or a fast-casual meal, the biggest reason behind the decline of manners may just be a numbers game.
“I believe it is more likely for people to break dining ‘rules’ because they go out and eat more often,” said Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas. “Years ago, people stayed home and sat around the family table. Today, there are more people in the workforce, which makes it more affordable for socializing and eating out. With new chance comes the possibility for more dining problems.”
【1】What did the 2015 survey find?
A.Many people accepted using phones at the table.
B.Cellphones were banned in most restaurants.
C.Most of the surveyed people used phones while eating out.

B.To explain dining rules in high-end restaurants.
C.To prove dining etiquette changes through time.
D.To argue young people are making dining rules today.
【3】According to Diane Gottsman, people forget their dining manners more often because ________.
A.they think they are unimportant

D.they must hurry meals to get back to work
【4】What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To introduce changes in dining manners.
B.To encourage people to have dining manners.
C.To report survey findings on dining manners.
D.To discuss the reasons for poor dining manners
28、Five steps to better handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate it when it’s time to put pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 【1】Here are five steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 【2】Hold it in place with your thumb(拇指), and your index and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are of the right size and proportion (比例). 【3】Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure (压力)
【4】That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try relaxing and don’t hold the pencil too hard.
【5】
Lots of games need you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pencil better.
A. Play games
B. Ask for advice
C. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.
D. So“a”should be half the height of a capital“A”.
E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F. The best way to hold a pencil is to rest it next to the base of your thumb.
G. The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
29、 I was diagnosed(诊断)with cancer last June. Finding out that I had breast cancer felt like I’d been locked up in a prison cell, but I later found something unexpected: freedom.
Tests and procedures followed. Once the daily treatments started, I was tired out. The tiredness that came with cancer was not like any kind of tiredness I’d known before.
Then the magic happened.
I started to realize that this life change had brought an unexpected gift. The usual pressures of life gave way to a different kind of stress, but it came with self-discovery. I do what I can and don’t care about the rest. With the disease, decisions come more easily, and things that I’d previously weighted more heavily no longer matter as much. I don’t need a perfect home. What does matter now is having family and friends and a husband who can shoulder this new responsibility with me.
The doctor says my situation is very good and there’s a 91 percent chance that I’ll still be alive in 10 years. I look forward to simple things like my garden this spring, and going back to work when I’m healthy again. I’m also imagining the joy of getting my quiet and modest life back. It’s inspiring and there are lots of people there with me. And the professionals are really good at what they do.
I used to wonder how it would feel to be told I had cancer. Sure, my first reaction was fear, panic, sorrow, and anger. Then I found my strength. The fear is still there, but to my amazement, I am handling it. “You got this,” people say encouragingly.

A.was too tired to bear the treatment any more B.found that she could handle the treatment easily

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards her future life?
A.Positive. B.Hopeless. C.Doubtful. D.Concerned.
【4】What is the main purpose of this article?
A.To help people learn to let go of stress in life. B.To remind people to take care of their bodies.
