  • 26、   Artie Shaw was born in New York City in 1910. His parents were poor persons who had come to the United States from Eastern Europe. At the age of fourteen, he began to play the saxophone(萨克斯管) and then the clarinet(竖笛). From very young age, Artie Shaw wanted to play his clarinet better than anyone. He wanted his sound and music to be perfect, so he began working as a professional musician when he was fifteen, and he left home and began playing in bands across the United States.

In 1927, young Artie Shaw traveled to Chicago, Illinois to hear the great trumpet (小号) player, Louis Armstrong. He immediately understood that Armstrong’s great jazz sound was the beginning of something new and exciting. Artie left Chicago with a growing interest in jazz music. Soon after, he moved to New York City. He got work playing the clarinet for the Columbia Broadcast System radio network in1936. He was given chance to found his band and play at New York’s famous Imperial Theater on Broadway. His group was not the top band in the show. But the crowd loved his music. This proved to be a major step in his career.

In 1938, Artie Shaw and his band recorded what would be one of their most popular songs. It sold millions of records. It still sells several thousand each year. Shaw was surprised that it became so popular. The song is "Begin the Beguine" written by Cole Porter. However, the fame caused problems for Shaw. He could not go anywhere without being recognized. He no longer had a private life.

  • 27、   “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.

“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, "losing the ability to understand the emotions(情感) of other people is one of the costs."

Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures and videos of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a fiveday nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.

Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement.

The study is not perfect in some sense, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us. “Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real communication.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the university of San Francisco.

Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 216 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising. Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑)(59%)and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带)(53%)!

So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called "Generation Helpless".

1According to Professor Greenfield, using digital devices in education leads to .

A.getting along well with family members B.failing to understand other peoples emotions

C.making more mistakes when taking exams D.falling far behind others in all schoolwork

2Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment .

A.are far from perfect B.are quite surprising

C.are worth considering D.need to be improved

3What can we know from the text?

A.Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment.

B.Students living without screens did much better in studies.

C.Too much play with digital devices raised some worries.

D.Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Screens harm emotions B.Here comes a digital world

C.Stay away from the Internet D.How people become addicted?

  • 29、   Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.

One barrier (障碍) to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been ‘range anxiety’ -- drivers’ concerns about using up juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. Nevertheless, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.

Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars  will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.

As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having been popular for several decades from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.

Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study’s findings and replace 87 per cent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free. However, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

1In the past, why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars?

A.They were not good value. B.They were very poorly made.

C.They were not widely promoted. D.They couldn’t travel at a high speed.

2What is the function of Paragraph 4?

A.To introduce the history of electric travel.

B.To explain why the world needs more electric cars.

C.To show why more people have interest in electric cars.

D.To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.

3Which is the best title for this passage?

A.My Dream Car B.History of Electric Car

C.Problems with Petrol Cars D.Driving into the Future

    A Bad Idea

Think you can walk, dive, take phone calls, e-mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York's new law says you can't. And you'll be 1 $S100 if you do it on a New York City street.

The law went into force last month, following research and a(n) 2number of accidents that involved people using electronic gadgets when crossing the street.

Who's to3 ? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited.

"We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can," says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a major limitation is the inability to4on two things at once".

The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question. A group of 18-to 21-year-olds and a group of 35-to 39-year-olds were given 90 seconds to translate5into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better when not interrupted. But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or a(n) 6message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and 7.

It is difficult to measure the productivity8by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spire, chief analyst at Basex. a business-research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $650 billion a year.

The9is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys conclude that 28 percent of the workers' time was spent on interruptions and10time before they returned to their main tasks.
