二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When a Houston dad found out his eight-year-old son was being bullied (欺负), he didn’t get mad at the classmate who teased him. Instead, he talked with the so-called bully and realized that the boy was struggling, too.

Aubrey Fontenot’s son, Jordan, told him a boy named Tamarion was teasing him. Fontenot decided to sit down with his son and Tamarion to understand what was going on, and something unexpected happened.

Tamarion told Fontenot he was being teased at school, too. “I asked, ‘By who? You are big. You are huge. Who is teasing you?’” the father said. “He said, ‘Just all the other kids, man. They are making fun of me.” Fontenot learned that Tamarion was getting teased for his clothes and shoes—his clothes and shoes were old and dirty. Fontenot then spoke to the boy’s mother. “She kind of confirmed it,” Fontenot said. “And she said, ‘That’s the kind of situation.’”

He felt sympathetic to the young boy and wanted to help. So he asked Tamarion’s mom if he could take her son to do some shopping.

Fontenot posted videos of their trip to the mall on social media and they went viral. Tamarion eventually smiled, and then the two were laughing and singing together on their shopping trip. Just as if he were taking his own son to do some shopping, Fontenot got Tamarion new clothes and shoes, and shared words of wisdom with him.

Then, the dad united the two boys. He said it was awkward at first—just a day earlier, they didn’t get along well at school. But the two classmates started playing sports games together and soon became friends.

It was not just about the clothes and shoes. Tamarion gained a friend in Jordan, and a mentor in his dad. Fontenot said he was also bullied when he was a child, so he knew it was important to listen to Tamarion’s story. He chose kindness instead of anger and brought the two boys together. “I wouldn’t say that was the goal, but that was the reward,” Fontenot said.

【1】What was Fontenot’s attitude toward his son’s being bullied?

    A.Amazed and embarrassed.

    B.Angry and impatient.

    C.Calm and sensible.

    D.Sad and discouraged.

【2】Why does the author say “something unexpected happened” in the second paragraph?

    A.Fontenot liked Tamarion instantly.

B.Tamarion bullied Jordan out of kindness.

C.Tamarion was also a victim of bullying.

D.Fontenot and Tamarion’s mother used to be friends.

【3】What did Fontenot do to solve the problem of bullying?

A.He turned to the school for help.

B.He asked Tamarion’s mother to settle the problem.

C.He ordered his son never to play with Tamarion again.

D.He made the two boys united and join together.

【4】What can we know from the text?

A.Jordan’s being bullied arose from his clothes and shoes.

  • 27、Fans, with different materials and shapes, are not only a means to cool down in the hot days but also a part of the culture for the Chinese. Here are some of the interesting cultural meanings for the fans in China.

    Feather fans

It is the earliest form of fans. Its most famous user is Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms period, who was the best adviser to a king. He always carried a white feather fan around. Since then the feather fans have become a symbol of wisdom in the Chinese classic literature, traditional paintings. They even appear in today's TV series and films now and then.

    Round fans

If feather fans were loved mostly by men, round fans were Chinese women's best friends. The round fans, originated in the West Han Dynasty, were usually made of bamboo frames of round or oval shapes, and white fine silk. Therefore, they could only be afforded by wealthy families back in those days. In Chinese culture, the round fans are closely linked with elegance (优雅) and beauty of women, as well as their happiness and sorrow.

    Folding(折叠) fans

The folding fans are quite familiar to us. In fact, the folding fans originated in Japan, and were introduced to China in the Northern Song Dynasty. The popularity of the folding fans owed greatly to the Chinese scholars(文人), who loved to paint and write on the folding fans and turned them into art pieces.

  • 28、   Dogs certainly need to bark (犬吠) every now and then, but if your neighbor's dog is getting in the way of  your daily life, you need to do something.

“Before you take action, you should record the dates and times that the barking happens to find out any patterns,” says Schweitzer, who is a dog owner. You might notice the barking only happens when the owners are at work, or during thunderstorms.

After two to three weeks of observing, go to your neighbors with the facts. Wait for a time when the barking is over. “Since you're trying to keep a good relationship, you can't go when you're angry and upset,” says Schweitzer. Besides, your neighbors might not even realize the barks are a problem, especially if the worst barking happens when they're not at home.

Politely explain the times when the barking gets bad, and then suggest a way of solving the problem. Ask if the dog can stay inside during storms, or offer a dog training class.

Making friends with the dog could help you gain some peace and quiet. If your neighbors introduce you to their dog, you should give the dog a treat. “If they become more comfortable seeing you, they're less likely to bark when they see you or when they're in the backyard,” says Schweitzer.

Whatever you do, don't talk with your other neighbors about the problem or start a petition (诉状) to get the dog to quiet down. “Those make people feel angry,” says Schweitzer. “That's when things escalate.”

If weeks go by and you still aren't seeing a difference, follow up with a note. Tie a dog treat on the note to build trust with your neighbors, and make a copy before dropping it off. That way, you'll have evidence (证据) that you've  discussed it before and followed up politely if you need to bring in a third party, says Schweitzer.

1What should people do first according to Schweitzer?

A.Record when the dog barks. B.Find out why the barking happens.

C.Find out if the dog is really dangerous. D.Record when the neighbor is usually out.

2When would be a good time for you to talk to your neighbor?

A.When the dog is barking. B.When you are feeling calm.

C.When you've found a problem. D.When your neighbor is walking the dog.

3What does the underlined word “escalate” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Become familiar. B.Become worse.

    C.Get interesting. D.Get personal.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.How to teach your dog to be quiet. B.What to do when your neighbor has a dog.

C.How to deal with a neighbor's noisy dog. D.What to do if your neighbor makes you angry.

  • 29、Have you got an addictive nature? Are you unable to stop yourself joining in your favorite computer games? This probably describes most of us because its only human nature to not want to miss out on something that everyone else is talking about.

Most crazes arrive suddenly and enthusiasm for them spreads quickly. They become a talking point on social media; we read about them, give them a try and, before we know it, we are hooked (钩住). In the past, these have been objects such as toys and games. Maybe you were the proud owner of a Rubik’s cube, which became the best-selling toy of all time-around 350 million have been sold so far.

Now, technology is driving the latest crazes. Games such as Angry Birds and Minecraft are crazes available on smartphones and computers that have been hard to put down.

Our addiction to crazes has been analyzed by scientists. One of them, Dr Ben Michaels, a clinical psychologist, explains that we want to experience the benefit that another person, or group of people, have experienced from something and this “hooks into an ancient evolutionary (进化的) fear of being left behind or abandoned by our tribes”; we have to join in or lose out.

Although becoming addicted to a computer game might not seem like a ‘benefit’, it can at least give you popularity among your friends. It allows you to learn new skills and gives you something to talk about at parties!

But fashions come and go and most crazes are just a flash in the pan so if one of them is not your cup of tea, don’t worry: there’ll be a new craze arriving very soon. Look at the addiction to loom bands (橡皮筋) - those little bands you could make jewellery and other things out of. For a brief period they were the must-have item for any schoolchild, now they’re the bargain bucket item in a discount shop or worse still, trash filling up our landfill sites! What crazes have you been addicted to?

【1】What can we learn from the passage?

A.A lot of people usually talk about the latest crazes on the Internet.

B.The toy “Rubik’s Cube” was not very popular when it was launched.

C.The majority of crazes usually last for a long time.

D.Loom bands are always thrown away in some discount shop.

【2】Why are we so addictive to crazes according to Dr. Ben?

A.We just want to benefit from what others have experienced.

B.We have the evolutionary fear of being left behind or missing out by our groups.

C.Some crazes are so attractive that we can’t refuse them.

D.Crazes can bring us so many benefits.

【3】Which of the following is NOT the benefit of being addicted to a particular craze?

    A.Getting popularity among your friends

    B.Learning new skills

C.Having something to talk about at parties

    D.Improving communication ability

【4】What is possibly the best title of the text?

    A.The Addiction to Computer Games

    B.The Fear of Missing out

    C.The Benefits of Crazes

    D.Nature of Humans

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
