  • 26、Flying to another country can sometimes take several days. But the designer of a futuristic jet (喷气式飞机) says his plane could take you around the world in your lunch break.

According to an article in The Sun, the plane, called the Antipode, could carry 10 people and use rocket boosters to go 12 km high. 【1】 Or it could fly from New York to Shanghai in 24 minutes.

An ordinary Boeing 747 has a top speed of 917 km/h. The fastest plane in the world right now is Air Force One. It carries the president of the United States and can reach 1,092 km/h. 【2】

Canadian designer Charles Bombardier says his plane could be 10 times faster than the Concorde, which could fly at 2,180 km/h. The Concorde was the world’s fastest passenger plane between 1976 and 2003. But the Concorde was very noisy and its nose got dangerously hot when it flew. A Concorde crashed in 2000, killing 114 people. 【3】

【4】 It stops the plane from overheating and having the same problems that the Concorde did. New technology, recently tested by NASA, makes the Antipode the perfect shape and weight to fly fast and safely.

“It’s always something that people would like a transportation system that could take you from one place on the planet to the other side,” Mr. Bombardier told the BBC.

【5】 The design is just a concept and will need more research before it becomes a reality.

A.No Concordes were flown again after 2003.

B.There are huge differences between high-speed planes.

C.But the Antipode would probably reach a crazy 25,750 km/h!

D.Don’t try to buy a ticket for the plane yet, though.

E.Then it could fly from London to New York in less than 20 minutes.

F.The superfast plane could only carry ten passengers.

    G.The Antipode’s design includes a special nose.

  • 27、   During summer days, warmer temperatures bring pests like mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can cause lots of trouble for people.1. They even can spread many serious diseases.

An easy way to protect yourself against mosquitoes is using repellents (驱虫剂). Joseph Conlon, an advisor of the American Mosquito Control Association, recommends using repellents that are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, which ensures that they actually do no harm to humans. 2. But some repellents can provide 4-6 hours of protection if the quality of them is excellent.

Mosquitoes are also very weak. A slight wind from a fan can help keep them away from you. It turns out that many mosquitoes are not very good fliers. 3.

Another way is to clear all the standing water (积水) every five days. Conlon explains that mosquitoes can produce young in water collected in areas as small as bottle caps. But they have a limited flight range, which means they can’t travel far. “The best way to avoid them is to not have them around in the first place.” he says. If you’ve got them in your backyard, it’s because you’re raising them in your backyard. 4. “If you can’t avoid the standing water around your house, I suggest raising fish that will eat mosquito larvae (幼虫).”

    5. They’ve experimented with male mosquitoes containing some materials that stop females from producing larvae. “There are not a lot of companies producing new chemicals or treatments that we can use,” a researcher of the experiment adds. “We need new technologies and products to get rid of mosquitoes.”

A.They usually provide two hours of protection.

B.Do remember to keep children away from them.

C.So try to make sure your house doesn’t have standing water.

D.You can wear protective clothing and keep your windows closed.

E.You can set up a fan in your house so that mosquitoes can’t bite you.

F.Many people hardly sleep well at night with mosquitoes flying around.

G.The researchers also try to find high-tech solutions to mosquito population.

  • 29、   Studies have shown that walking among trees makes us relaxed. 1There’s plenty of research showing the link between being in nature and being happy, but most of the research has focused on adults.

2 Explaining the motivation behind the study, researchers note that with environmental issues such as global warming, more studies are focusing on the relationships between humans and nature to find solutions to these problems, and the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and their actions. However, few studies focus on this aspect.

For the study, researchers worked with 296 children between the ages of 9 and 12. To measure how connected they were to nature, the kids were asked how much they enjoy activities like seeing wildflowers and wild animals, hearing sounds of nature and touching animals and plants. 3They also found that the more concerned children were about the environment and nature, the more likely they were to be happy.

So exposure to nature is related to active behaviors and happiness of children. What does that mean to adults? As we all know, children usually tend to follow adults’, especially their parents’ behaviors. That’s to say, when adults are outside and appreciate nature, kids learn by example. 4

Researchers say that children need role models who can gently guide them to nature with excitement and an attitude of a lifelong learner. 5 What’s more important is that they spend time together with children by exploring a fun and safe environment.

A.It’s so good going for a walk around trees.

B.Even just smelling the trees helps reduce anxiety.

C.And if parents enjoy being close to nature, so will their children.

D.Parents don’t have to be experts in environmental science or nature studies.

E.They found that the kids connected to nature were more likely to behave actively.

F.In a new study researchers wanted to see if kids get the same benefits from being outdoors.

G.Researchers will study more about the connection between children’s happiness and nature.

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 1 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.

Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 10 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Our washing machine needed to be fixed and we had called for a service person to mend it. The machine drum was making a lot of noise and the clothes were not being washed properly. The service man could only speak Spanish and it was a tough time for me to communicate with him. He was patient enough to let me know what was wrong with the machine and he conveyed the parts that were to be fixed. When the machine finally started working properly, I breathed a sigh of relief and asked about the service charge. The bill amount came to be around $41.3.

I quickly gave him a $50 note and requested the balance amount. When he searched his pocket and said that he had none, I went inside and started hunting for the exact change. All the time, at the back of my head I was scared that he might get his hands on something from the house. You see, there were expensive gadgets and jewels on the earrings stand hanging out there in the living room where he was waiting. And last time when I was getting my air conditioner fixed, I found my ring was lost. And the ring was from my grandma. The only guy that might take it was the service man, for we hadn't had any visitors. I even called him later but he said he did not see anything like a ring. I could feel from his voice that he was hiding something but I had no evidence of his stealing my ring.

My jewels were only a few steps from him and he could easily grab one without being noticed. I even kind of heard his steps in the hall.

In a hurry, I somehow fished out a $20 note, two separate $10 notes and the remaining tens. I rushed to the living room and immediately handed him the service charge. I wanted him to thank and leave but he stood there still.
