26、 Jim worked at a radio station all his life. He was a well-known and famous radio show host. All of his friends and workmates knew him by one feature (特征): if he’s on-air, he is always wearing a suit and a tie. They laughed at him: ‘No one ever sees you, why do you dress like that?’, but he always turned that into a joke.
One day Jim was invited to appear on the TV. There was a show focusing on the oldest radio employees. For the first time the people, who only knew him by his voice, would see him. Before the recording of the show, the director came to Jim and asked:
“Usually you arrive on time, but today you are 10 minutes late. It’s not horrible, but I’m still interested, why?”
“You see,” Jim answered, “at the last moment when I was already dressed up, I noticed that I don’t have new socks. For the first time I was invited to the television, and I thought that simply wearing clean sock is not enough. It needs to be in new socks. So I needed to go to the store for socks.”
“But why do you need new socks?” The director was surprised. “You could have come without the socks, because we will be filming you only in close-up, over the waist.”
“You see, to be perfect on-air, I need to feel myself perfect in everything, starting with the shirt and finishing with the pen in my pocket. And if my socks have holes in them, or my shoes are dirty, I’m not perfect anymore.”

27、 When I was at school, read Gavin Maxwell’s book Ring of Bright Water. Affected by the story, I travelled to Sandaig and saw the house and one of the otters (水獭) with Andrew Scot (Gavin’s otter keeper). Later, I wrote to Gavin about my visit to his home and surroundings, and after the fire that destroyed Sandaig house he invited me to his new home in the remote countryside on Eilean Ban.
Gavin expressed the hope that I would take advantage of my interest in keeping a diary and write. On his death, I entered a competition for young writers about my experience of meeting Gavin, with story titled Bach to Paradise. Melvyn Bragg, the competition’s judge, spoke highly of my story, which he found to be “very moving” and added that he had enjoyed it “very much”.
Encouraged by Melvyn’s comments, I became a regular contributor to The Northumbrian Magazine, until I left the north-east of England in 1992 to live on the Lancashire-Yorkshire border. To emulate Gavin’s lifestyle, I chose to live in a remote farmhouse as what he did on the edge of the Bronte moors for over 20 years, with only wildlife for neighbors. During this time, I earned my living as countryside ranger (护林人) and helped the public to learn about the countryside through guided walks and events and by giving lectures.
Then I became a teacher, photographer and writer. Without Gavin, it is unlikely that I would have achieved the same success.
Thanks to the way of life I chose, my daughter, Mary, has recently gained her honorary degree in zoo management. She told me she had been inspired by my sparking (激发) her curiosity in the wildlife around our home.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Gavin Maxwell’s influence. B.Melvyn Bragg’s encouragement.
C.Benefits of country life. D.Protection of wildlife.
28、Trekking (徒步旅行) 500 miles across Spain is no easy task for anyone, but for the wheelchair user Justin Skeesuck, achieving the dream seemed nearly impossible. However, Skeesuck’s lifelong best friend, Patrick Gray, simply didn’t accept that idea. He said, “We’ve done everything together so far. Why don’t we have one more adventure?”
That’s exactly what he did — pushing Skeesuck across northern Spain’s Camino de Santiago. Though Skeesuck has a muscle disease similar to ALS (肌萎缩侧索硬化) and high blood pressure, he first got the idea to go on the journey after he watched a travel show about the trail. He said, “I knew immediately since my heart was just telling me, ‘You need to do this.’”
With Gray on board and the blessings of their family, the two best friends from Idaho set off to make Skeesuck’s dream of going for the journey a reality. However, neither Gray nor Skeesuck realized how physically and emotionally arduous the trip would be. Not only did they have a strict time limit — about six weeks to get from start to finish, but they also faced extremely difficult obstacles (障碍). With Gray pushing Skeesuck in a three-wheel wheelchair, the pair crossed mountains, rivers and a desert. “I’ve never been that physically exhausted in my entire life,” Gray said. The pair came across countless kind people during their trip who were eager to help them finish their journey, but they refused their help with gentle words. 34 days later, the two best friends finished their journey, realizing a dream that helped them learn about themselves and others. “The adventure has taught me for sure that when you do something with faith, and never give up, amazing things can really happen,” Skeesuck said.
Gray recorded their incredible trip in a book — “I’ll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles, Two Best Friends and One Wheelchair”, which would be published soon. Skeesuck and Gray are also working on a children’s book that will tell the story of their adventure. They hope that the book will give kids strength when they deal with difficulties.

31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 【1】. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 【2】 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.
Is there really much truth behind this science of 【3】 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 【4】 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.
Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.
Each micro-expression is unique to 【5】 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.
A liar refuses eye contact.
People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 【6】 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 【7】of sadness and few people can make this 【8】 expression, so it is actually never faked.
Guilty knowledge technique is 【9】.
Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)【10】. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
