  • 26、   On Aug 12, as white nationalists clashed with anti-racists over whether a statue of a leader in the American Civil war should be removed from a park in Charlottesville, a speeding car drove into the crowd, killing one and injuring dozens of others, reported The Washington Post.

The car driver was a 20-year-old white nationalist. Actually many of the white nationalists were young men. Some may wonder how the younger generation could have become caught up in racism, yet it’s believed that racist groups are using modern techniques to appeal to them. “Younger people have access to many more forms of information than ever before inhuman history—socialmedia.” Oren Segal, director of the anti-defamation(诽谤) league’s Center on Extremism in the US, told Newsweek.

According to Segal, racist groups introduce people to “hate” by finding ways to communicate with them online. And Paul Becker, a sociology professor at the University of Dayton, US, believes that some young people may even be using this to fill a “void(空虚感)” in their life. “These groups provide a place to belong, and give their lives a goal or purpose,”he told The Atlanta.Journal-Constitution.

Meanwhile, the changing of the US population structure is causing concern for some people after experts predicted that minority groups in the US could become the majority by 2050, leading to dissatisfaction and anger, according to Newsweek.

The problem of racism has been on the rise in the US for some time. According to a Gallup poll in March, 42 percent of Americans worry a great deal about race relations, while the figure was only 13 percent in 2010.

But like most problems, it’s unlikely to be solved overnight. “Even the best policy won’t stop every attack. But they could, at the very least, help make events like Charlottesville less likely,” wrote Vox.

1Which statement is NOT why racism in the US is going from bad to worse?

A.The statue of a leader in the American Civil war is to be removed from a park.

B.Participation of racism may give the racists a purpose and a sense of belonging.

C.Minority groups may compose a larger partof the population in less than 40 years.

D.The advance of technology is making it easier for more people to get involved in racism.

2What might Paul Becker agree with?

A.Certain social media should be cut off from young people.

B.It’s common for the young in the US to feel empty and aimless.

C.Involvement in racism gives some young people a purpose.

D.The Internet plays a positive role in keeping the young free from racism.

3What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.It’s impossible to stop racism.

B.Efforts should be made to solve racism in a short time.

C.Policies can contribute to the decrease of racial problems.

D.Events like Charlottesville are caused by drawbacks of policies.

  • 27、When you think of Chinese food in the US, fried rice, or General Tso’s chicken may first come to mind. But a new museum exhibition in New York City is trying to expand visitors’ palates (味蕾). It features stories of famous cooks like Martin Yan and home cooks whose food represents 18 different regional cooking styles of China.

“I think it’s unfair to just classify Chinese cooking as one,” says Kian Lam Kho, an organizer of “Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America” at the Museum of Chinese in America. “Even with the same dish or same cuisine, every family has a different variation.” That’s why the organizers say if you want to taste the full range of Chinese cuisine in the US, you’ll need to go beyond restaurants and into home kitchens, which can play a central role in many immigrants’ lives.

“The kitchen itself is kind of a comfort when you come to a new country. That’s the one place where you set up as your home base, and you cook things that you remember from your past,” explains Audra Ang, another organizer.

One of the home cooks showcased in the exhibition is Ni Biying, 80, of Manhattan. She worked as a live-in babysitter for years before she could finally afford to rent a home with her own kitchen. These days, you can usually find her moving around her one-bedroom apartment as a sweet smell of vinegar and rice wine floats from her stove. For Ni, a small dinner for friends and family means preparing almost a dozen different dishes. She learned some of her techniques from her father, who made most of her family’s meals when she was a child. “I still miss the beef with stir-fried celery my father used to cook,” she says. And it’s the kind of comfort food that defines Chinese food for Ni.

【1】What is the new museum exhibition mainly about?

    A.Cuisine of different countries.

    B.Exploration of famous restaurants.

    C.History of Chinese immigration.

D.Stories of Chinese food and cooks.

【2】Why does the kitchen play a key role in many immigrants’ lives?

    A.It provides a wealthy life.

B.It brings a sense of belonging.

C.It helps them to accept new cultures.

D.It enables them to forget the past.

【3】What can we learn about Ni Biying from Paragraph 4?

A.She worked in a Chinese restaurant.

B.She made most meals as a child.

C.She learned cooking from her father.

D.She lives with a big family.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Cuisine Gains New Variations

B.Home Cooking Brings More to the Table

C.Immigrants Seek Their Fortune in the US

    D.Chinese Restaurant Tells Immigrant Tales

  • 28、   When I'm surfing the Web, I want to be attracted by articles on Europe's political history, but I end up reading trivia (琐事) such as a menu from a Michelin restaurant. Why am I not curious about the things I want to be curious about? Curiosity feels as if it's outside your control, but if you understand what causes curiosity, you might be able to direct it a little bit better.

Humans will give up the known benefit to explore the unknown. In one experiment, subjects were asked to choose one of four photos, each carrying some chance of paying a cash prize. Photos appeared again and again, so subjects learned to pick the best-paying. But when a novel photo appeared, they chose it quite more often. This preference for novelty is the reason why producers regularly change product packaging and advertising.

We're super curious when we sense that the environment offers new information to add to what we already know. Note that your brain calculates what you might learn in the short-term—your long-term interests are ignored. That' s why a cardiac surgeon (心脏外科医生) who is excited about her job will find a conference presentation on the operation boring if her brain decides that the talk won't add to her knowledge. However, when her friend persuades her to attend a lecture on arts, her brain may calculate that this will be a rich source of information—and she finds herself interested.

Why not just search for topics you truly want to learn about at present? That sounds logical, but a search for a topic like "universe" will lead to thousands of results. And there is no way of knowing which offers the just-right match to your present knowledge that will maintain (维持) your curiosity. You'll probably end up like the surgeon at the boring conference talk.

Albert Einstein advised a young student to "never lose a holy curiosity." But the challenge is changing its focus from something short-lived to something more lasting.

1What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.It seems difficult to control our curiosity.

B.It's no hard task to fully understand curiosity.

C.Trivia can always attract everyone's attention.

D.Europe's political history is too boring to focus on.

2Why does the cardiac surgeon find attending the art lecture interesting?

A.She is tired of her present job.

    B.She often attends art exhibition.

C.She finds it can expand her knowledge.

D.She considers it does good to her work.

3What can we learn from this text?

A.Subjects were more likely to choose repeated photos.

B.Well-matched results offer no way to maintain our curiosity.

C.Einstein suggested it was challenging to awaken the short-term curiosity.

D.Keeping our curiosity focused on the long-term interests is quite an effort.
