26、 Radio newsreaders and television hosts at Ireland’s national broadcaster RTE are very angry at being told to pronounce words according to the Queen’s English.
A report in The Irish Sun newspaper says that RTE’s workers have been given an A-Z style guide of words which instructs them on how to pronounce certain words in an effort to make sure they are clearly understood. The A-Z comes with videos containing lessons of how to “properly” pronounce the “problem” words. An official at RTE told the Irish Sun that producers gave the guide to keep up standards. “The guide is there for anyone who needs it.” he said, “RTE often get letters from the public over how certain words were mispronounced. The word ‘issue’ is a big one at the moment, people don’t like how it’s pronounced. There is an expectation that as the national broadcaster we are correct.”
However, Irish linguistics expert Professor Raymond Hickey called the RTE’s actions “internalized colonialism (内化殖民主义)”. He expressed his disbelief that Irish speakers were being asked to use words with an English accent. He said: “The basic problem is RTE expects its workers to speak as if they were English. Why? We have our own form of English, which is different but fully reasonable and accepted worldwide.” Professor Hickey specially talked of some examples of the words Irish hosts are being asked to pronounce with a British English accent. He said: “The Irish don’t pronounce the TH [in ‘birthday’] as a fricative, but as a stop with no breath…The same is true of ‘news’ — the Irish pronunciation is and always has been ‘nooze’.”

D.Because they often make mistakes when reading the letters
【3】The official at RTE mentioned the letters from the public ______.
A.to make sure the guide is clearly understood
B.to explain why RET needed to take actions
C.to show how some words are mispronounced
D.to show how difficult it is to be a host
【4】In Hickey’s opinion, the Irish way of the word “news” is ________.
A.internalized colonialism
B.to be changed into the Queen’s English
C.reasonable and accepted
D.the same as the British way
27、 Navigation(导航)in unfamiliar places is a major problem in large cities. Therefore, the popularity of mobile GPS facilities has greatly risen. However,it is sometimes difficult for users to understand where to go.In addition, they have to regularly look at the screen to follow the route, thus increasing risks on the road.
Luckily, preuniversity students from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Moscow have created sneakers that can give directions, count a person's steps and measure the calories burned. The smart sneakers can lead users to their destination. The idea is simple. When moving towards a turn, the right or left shoe vibrates(震动)according to the directions.
“We've developed a facility that goes well with a special mobile app via Bluetooth and receives information about a route. The facility performs all the necessary functions without affecting walking and can be joined to the laces(鞋带)of ordinary sneakers. The user only needs to run the app once, and then puts the phone away and enjoys the walk.In addition to navigation, the system can also keep track of the distance traveled. This information can be found in the mobile app,”said Alexander Pinchuk and Maxim Levkin, the authors of the project.
The team plans to continue developing the project because the smart clothing market is growing every year.According to the creators,it is likely that in a few years, smart sneakers will become popular like smart watches.
This is not the first original project of preuniversity students from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI Valentin Klimov, deputy director of the Institute of Cyber Intelligent Systems of MEPhI,says,“Our preuniversity students have created rather original projects before. For example, last year, our students developed a useful system for people with poor eyesight and won an international children's competition;then they won the Junior competition and took part in the largest international competition:Intel ISEF.Now these guys are our first year students, and this shows the high level of our applicants.”
【1】In what way do the newly created sneakers give directions to users?

28、4 Eco-Friendly Bikes to Ride This Summer
Nowadays, many drivers are searching for more environment-friendly ways to get around and are starting to look back to bikes. Bikes don’t require gas. In terms of convenience, bikes can be easier to park and can help riders get their daily exercise in.
Companies everywhere are beginning to take the traditional bike and adapt it to people’s needs. Below are eco-friendly bikes to consider adding to your morning ride.
1. Bamboobikes
Ccycles produces Bamboo Bikes. The company sources bamboo and carbon fiber joints for their bike frames. Bamboo is ideal for bikes because it can absorb significantly more shock than carbon fiber. It is also very lightweight compared to traditional bike materials, like steel. But bamboo is incredibly strong and can take on twice the compression force as steel.
2. Cowboy
Cow offers Cowboy, a bike hides the battery in its frame under the saddle. The removable battery takes about two and half hours to charge and has a range of roughly 31 miles, but the best part is the app features. The Cowboy app gives travelers a real time dashboard (仪器板) to check out their speed and distance. Riders never need to worry about getting lost since it has navigation and can pull up your route history from your ride states. This smart tech also gives riders updates about the bike’s status. The Cowboy has a high tech locking system so the owner is the only one who can start up the bike.
3. The Faraday Bicycle
Faraday ebikes have a 250W motor, and the battery can be fully charged in less than 4 hours. Faraday recently partnered with the organization One Tree Planted to help reforest California after the state underwent serious damage from wildfires that destroyed thousands of acres of land in the area. The company stepped up and donated $100 from every bike sold to plant 100 trees.
4. The Donky Bike

29、 Australia is a society of people from a rich diversity (多样) of cultural, ethnic, linguistic (语言的) and religious backgrounds. Most Australians are immigrants or the descendants (后裔) of immigrants who arrived over the past two centuries from more than 200 countries.
Cultural and linguistic diversity was a feature of Australian life before European settlement and remains a defining feature of modern society. Immigration began with European settlement in 1788. It continued at a steady pace — reaching 50,000 a year during the Gold Rush Period of the 1850s — until the population reached seven million in the 1940s. Most settlers were from a British background. Since the Second World War, the Australian government’s immigration program has brought more than 6.6 million migrants to Australia.
Today, almost one in four of Australia’s estimated resident population of 24 million was born overseas. The last 50 years have seen a significant change in the source countries of people who choose to come here. In the 1960s, 45% of all new settlers were born in the United Kingdom and Ireland. By 2006 to 2007, this had fallen to 17%, with settlers and long-term visitors increasing from countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Africa and the Middle East.
Australia recognizes, accepts and respects cultural diversity. There are few countries in the world where migrants have achieved the level of economic, political, social and cultural participation that they have in Australia. Foreign languages are taught in most mainstream Australian schools and universities, as well as in community ethnic schools, many of which are funded by the Australian government. The Australian government spends a large amount of money every year supporting the teaching and learning for Asian, European and indigenous (本土的) Australian languages and Australian sign language for the deaf in mainstream schools as well as through community language programs.
Foreign languages are taught in both primary and secondary schools. The most popular languages studied are Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Indonesian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic and Latin. Around 50% of students study a foreign language at some time during their primary and secondary schooling. Almost 150 languages are taught in mainstream and non-mainstream settings.
