  • 27、On March 10, 2019, eight-year-old Tanitoluwa 'Tani' Adewumi defeated 73 young competitors to win the New York State Scholastic Chess Championship in his age group — kindergarten to third grade — with five wins and one draw. While the achievement is remarkable in itself, what is even more so is that the youngster, who was homeless at the time, began learning the game less than a year ago.

Tani and his family arrived in New York City from Nigeria in 2017, seeking religious protection. A church pastor(牧师)helped find the family of four space in a homeless shelter in Manhattan and, soon after, Tani entered the local elementary school. It was here that the young talent was first introduced to the basics of chess by a part-time teacher. Attracted by the game, the then seven-year-old begged his mother, Oluwatoyin, to allow him to join the school's chess club. The family were concerned that they would be unable to afford the fees and expenses, which add up to thousands of dollars due to travel and chess competition admissions, Oluwatoyin emailed chess instructor Russell Makofsky, who ran the club. To her surprise and delight, Makofsky agreed to waive all costs for young Tani. The rest, as they say, is history. The young boy, who has got seven prizes in less than a year, currently ranks 27 in America in his age group.

Though the chess club certainly helps, Tani's success can be largely owed to the efforts he has put into the game. The chess talent practices the game for several hours a day either on the floor with his board, or online, using his dad’s laptop. Every Saturday, Tani and his mother head to Harlem for a free 3-hour class to help further sharpen his game skills.

Not surprisingly, Tani's incredible story, first reported by The New York Times, has resulted in an outpouring of support from the American public. Shortly after the young boy won the New York State Championship, Makofsky began a GoFundMe campaign for Tani and his family to 'secure a home where he can continue on his journey'.

And the heartwarming story gets even better! Since they now have a home, the family have decided to 'pay it forward' and donate the over $200,000 collected on GoFundMe to African immigrants in America who are struggling the way the family was.

【1】What made Tani's achievement especially remarkable?

    A.His young age

    B.His quick learning

    C.Support from his family

    D.Help from his teacher

【2】What does the underlined part 'to waive all costs for young Tani' in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.To pay for Tani's schooling.

B.To raise money for Tani's family.

C.To teach Tani free of charge.

D.To spend more on Tani’s training.

    【3】What's paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Success of Tani.

    B.Activities of the chess club.

    C.Tani's devotion to the game.

    D.Public reaction to Tani's story.

【4】What does the last paragraph tell us about the family?

    A.They are caring.

    B.They live in poverty.

    C.They are honest.

    D.They are pitiful.

  • 28、   We have a tendency to think highly of mankind’s impressive complex inventions. But sometimes, it’s the simple technologies that truly change the world. These little-known inventions maybe don’t appear incredibly complex at first glance, but they improved the lives of countless people.

A smokeless solar cooker for developing countries

The problem: Cooking in the developing world often requires large amounts of costly fuel and creates harmful smoke.

The solution: The Infinity Bakery and other similar solar ovens aim to reduce disease and save energy by offering an affordable, sun-powered cooker to developing communities. The oven, which concentrates the sun’s rays, is made from recycled oil drums, wood, bamboo and clay, so it can be produced locally and quickly.

Water pipes that monitor their own leaks

The problem: We lose between $12.5 million and $92 million worth of clean drinking water every year in the U.S. due to leaking pipes, according to a 2005 study by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The solution: “Smart Pipe” technology, which is still in development, would use sensors to monitor leaks in public water systems, making our water use more efficient. If brought to scale, this type of innovation could help communities detect leaks when they occur, and fix them early.

A shower that reuses its own water

The problem: Showers waste a tremendous amount of water and require a huge amount of energy. Every year, 1.2 trillion gallons of water are used to shower in the U.S. alone, according to the EPA.

The solution: The OrbSys shower promises to reduce water use by 90 percent and energy use by 80 percent. The OrbSys recycles shower water by pumping it through a filter in a closed-loop system, and the clean water that comes out of the filter only needs to be reheated minimally. The device could result in dramatic water and energy savings if used on a large scale.

1Why is the Infinity Bakery fit for developing countries?

A.This kind of oven can be easily made and costs little.

B.There is much more sunlight in developing countries.

C.It can produce more food without giving off smoke.

D.Developing world is rich in the materials to make it.

2What can we know about the Smart Pipe?

A.It is used in developing countries. B.It saves water by recycling.

C.It has not been put into practice. D.It can fix the leaks by itself.

3What is the similarity of the three inventions in the text?

    A.Energy-saving. B.Sun-powered. C.Water-based. D.Environment-friendly.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.New Ways Found to Protect Environment

B.Simple Inventions to Change the World

C.Developing World Benefits from New Inventions

    D.Modern Technology Improves Living Condition

  • 29、   You know that thrill you get when listening to your favorite music or that exciting feeling down your spine (脊柱) when you hear your favorite melody or rhythm? According to a recent study, it seems the same thing can happen while you are reading, but not with every kind of text. This opens up fascinating questions around how music, reading and emotions are connected in the brain.

“We decided we would do a comparison between four or five different kinds of texts to see how the brain responded,” explains Professor Adam Zeman, a neurologist. “The participants lay in an MRI scanner reading the texts, and then we compared brain activity for those five texts.” The texts ranged from deadly boring ones to highly exciting ones, including the Highway Code, passages from novels and poems.

As the researchers observed, participants found some texts more emotional than others. When they read these emotional texts, there was higher activity in brain areas associated with pleasure and reward — the same areas related to the thrill we get when we listen to music. As Zeman says, “It was a nice proof that the emotional response to literature and to music has quite a bit in common.”

When the participants were reading poems, the team found there was more activity in a particular group of brain areas called the Default Network. "These areas seem to be associated with things we do with our minds when we are resting, like thinking about what's happened to us recently, thinking about what’s going to happen in the near future, about other people, and that network seems to be more strongly associated with poetry than with prose” explains Zeman. The study shows that the different texts activate different areas of our brains when we read.

1What can we know from the study?

A.People may feel excited when reading poems. B.People aren’t thrilled when listening to music.

C.Music gives participants more pleasure than text. D.Deadly boring texts never excite the brain.

2What is the purpose of the comparison between different kinds of texts?

A.To thrill the participants. B.To scan the participants’ brain.

C.To check the response of human's brain. D.To teach the participants novels and poems.

3What happened in the participants’ brains when they were reading?

    A.Their brains preferred music.

B.Brain areas related to pleasure became more active.

C.Their emotional response to literature stopped.

D.Their brains were less emotional when reading the emotional text.

4Where is the text probably from?

A.A science magazine. B.A film review.

    C.An advertisement. D.A science fiction.

A huge milestone has just been reached in the field of artificial intelligence: AlphaGo, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind unit, has defeated legendary Go player Lee Se-dol in the first of five historic matches being held in Seoul, South Korea. Lee 1 after about three and a half hours, with 28 minutes and 28 seconds remaining on his clock. The series is the first time a professional 9-dan Go player has taken on a computer, and Lee is 2 for a $1 million prize.

“I was very surprised,”said Lee after the match.“I didn’t expect to lose. But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

In December 2018, The Guardian changed its wording-using 'global heating' instead of 'global warming' -after scientists found that Earth's temperature is set to rise from between 2.5C and 4.5C. There had been a goal to keep the rise within 2C. And on May 1, the UK parliament (议会) declared a 'climate emergency', becoming the first parliament to do so.

It's true that 'global heating' and 'climate emergency' are – in terms of language – two simple phrases. But they send out plenty of messages.

If with 'global warming' we're still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, entering the state of 'global heating' is like heading to a point where the delicate (微妙的) balance of nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral will die, polar bears will lose their habitats completely, and extreme weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen at a higher frequency. There is no denying that we're entering a 'climate emergency'.

'Decades ago when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts could be seen as an issue for future generations, ' but, as Katharine Mach, a Stanford University climate scientist, told The New York Times, now it's definitely our issue, 'a shift (变化) we all are living together'.

However, getting these messages through is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution – if there are any solutions left to find.

'We have no time to waste, ' said the UK's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to the BBC. Corbyn urged that 'we take rapid and dramatic action now'.

Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.
