  • 27、   You may think that sailing is difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.

First, you must ask yourself, "Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?" You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let's start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. At should be at a 90° angle(角度)to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动). It shouldn't look like on a flag pole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try the sail will flap and the boat ail stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can't go in straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tucking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

1What should you consider first while sailing?

    A.Sailors' strength. B.Wave levels.

    C.Wind directions. D.Size of sails.

2What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The sail. B.The boat.

    C.The wind. D.The angle.

3What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

A.Move in a straight line. B.Allow the sail to flap.

C.Lower the sail. D.Tack the boat.

4Where can you probably find the text?

    A.In a popular magazine. B.In a tourist guidebook.

C.In a physics textbook. D.In an official report.

  • 28、   I once had a student who got his finger stuck inside a test tube in science class. It was really quite stuck. I knew something was up when I saw about 12 different shoulders around the room shaking as they heroically tried to hold back their laughter. This young man’s finger continued to get whiter and whiter right before my eyes.

Remaining calm, I suggested he carefully rotate (旋转) the tube. It wouldn’t move a bit. He tried soap and cold water. Still stuck. Meanwhile chaos was breaking out in my class, as my lesson became completely derailed. Finally, I sent this young man to the secretary, who raised six children of her own. With her in charge, I was completely confident all would be OK.

Forgetting about the lesson of the day, I masterfully got the students back in some degree of order by sharing my own story of getting my knee stuck between the rails of a balcony. Same kind of curiosity, I remembered wondering at the time how far I could thrust () my knee between the rails. Inch by inch, I kept pushing and before I knew it, my knee was stuck swelling right before my eyes and in front of lots of strangers at a popular Las Vegas hotel!

Many of the students listening to my story of humiliation (丢脸) shot up their hands eager to tell their own stories of heads, arms, fingers stuck in places they shouldn’t be. The laughter was refreshing while we waited for the finger tube boy to return. We returned to the science lesson on “total internal reflection” carefully now to use the equipment properly.

A few minutes later, the young man came back with a grin ear to ear, test tube unbroken and finger returning to a lovely shade of pink. I just couldn’t get mad at this kid. He’s only twelve after all. I too got my knee unstuck, but not without a tremendous amount of embarrassment. The excuse for me, however, was not youth but sheer stupidity. I was after all 51 years old when this happened.

1What do we know about the other students when they saw the boy getting stuck?

    A. They were curious about it. B. They thought it was funny.

    C. They pretended to be calm. D. They were frightened.

2Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “derailed” in paragraph 2?

    A. Out of control. B. In order.

    C. Beyond reach. D. In charge.

3Why did the author mention her own experience at a hotel?

    A. She tried to distract her students from the accident.

    B. She hoped to teach her students the lesson of the day.

    C. She wanted to inspire her students’ curiosity.

    D. She intended to show how she got unstuck from the rails.

4What did the author think of the boy?

    A. He was to blame for the accident.

    B. He was too young to get his finger stuck.

    C. He had good reason to make the mistake.

    D. He was responsible for his stupid behavior.

  • 29、   The artificial control of the weather, known as weather modification, seems like something out of a science fiction novel, but now it seems to have become a reality. Weather Modification International, a North Dakota-based company, is using planes to target clouds and draw out more rain from them.

The concept behind the practice, which is called cloud seeding, has been around for decades. But there is new urgency due to climate change and a rapidly growing global population, which have disrupted (中断) global water supplies.

Weather Modification describes cloud seeding as "an improvement"of the natural raining process. The technology makes storms more efficient by getting additional moisture (水汽) out of clouds.

"If there are no clouds in the sky that have any moisture in them, then we can't do anything."said Brian Kindrat, an aircraft captain at Weather Modification. "What we can do is tap into what is there and assist mother nature."

To do this, pilots target clouds with lots of moisture and put small amounts of a silver iodide (碘化银) mixture. The water in the clouds condenses (凝结) and becomes heavy. Then, it falls to the ground as rain.

The company sees cloud seeding as part of a solution for droughts (干旱). "We aren't going to solve large climate shifts in areas, but if you went back and you looked in California and said if we had an additional 10%, 15%, 20% of snowpack and rain over the last 10 year...it would be significantly different." said Neil Brackin, president of Weather Modification. "With such a program as cloud seeding, additional water for cities and agriculture is available. In fact everybody can benefit from it." Brackin added.

But there are concerns about cloud seeding's long-term impacts. For example, it's unclear how making it rain in one state affects a neighboring state. It's also up for debate who "owns" the water―such as which state or country―that comes out of the clouds. There are also environmental questions, such as ones related to the long-term impacts of silver iodide.

Although some critics may have concerns about companies impacting the weather, the company denies that it's "playing God". "We're not really playing God. I think that's really overstating what we're doing."Brackin said. "We're being very specific and environmentally friendly in what we're doing to enhance the natural raining."

1What can we learn about cloud seeding from paragraph 2 and 3?

A.It has not been put into practice yet.

B.It will enable people to control the weather at will.

C.It is a new concept put forward recently.

D.It can help deal with drought.

2What did Brian Kindrat want to say about Weather Modification

    A.It can create rain magically.

B.It can only depend on nature.

C.It has the ability to change nature.

D.It can produce rain from any cloud.

3What can be inferred from Brackin's words in the last paragraph

A.He is full of confidence in the future of cloud seeding.

B.He thinks the existing cloud seeding needs to be improved.

C.He disagrees with the criticism aimed at the impact of cloud seeding.

D.He believes cloud seeding can do much more than increasing rainfall.

4What's the author's attitude to the practice of cloud seeing

    A.Objective B.Critical C.Approving D.Doubtful

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

A brother and sister made their usual hurried pre-Christmas visit to the little farm, where lived their elderly parents with their small herd(群) of horses.

The young folks had fond memories of their childhood here. Everything was perfect except the aging old horse, ‘The Old One'.

Doubtfully, the young folks asked the old couple, “ Why do you not at least get rid of ‘The Old One’?”

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, and replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”

Worried and confused, the young folks wished the old couple a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

The old couple shook their heads in sorrow. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How was it that these young folks did not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?

Because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the first spark fall in the bam(马厩). None but the‘ The Old One'.

In a matter of minutes, the bam was full of hungry flames. With a cry of horror and despair, the old couple sank sobbing to the ground, helpless. The bam was in ruins.

The old man turned to his wife, forcing a smile, “We have lost much. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair and pray for our beloved ‘The Old One'”.

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they got to the peak of the hill, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and puzzled, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the pine tree was their Christmas gift-The Old One’ lay close to the trunk of the tree, with the entire herd.

    Paragraph 1:

As it turned out, the moment ‘The Old One' saw the smoke, she pushed the door and led the horses through it.
