  • 26、Americans are buying more products and services than ever before through the Internet. Online sales now represent as much as one-tenth of all retail sales in the United States. This has led traditional stores to seek new ways to keep their customers loyal.

Lynne Shaner used the internet to buy everything she needed for her wedding and holiday gifts for her husband and step-daughter. Other than food, 90 percent of her purchases were made on her home computer.

There are a lot of people like her. Experts say American online shopping hit records in both November and December. Fifty-seven percent of Americans have bought something electronically.

Store owners worry that this growing amount of online sales will hurt their business. Cornell University marketing professor Ed Mclaughlin says they should be worried.

Professor Mclaughlin says traditional stores can keep their customers by selling goods like clothing, which buyers may want to see and try on before purchasing. He says the stores could also offer things that are difficult to ship. He also says some stores can please customers by offering to set up or repair electronic products.

Bill Martin is the founder of Shopper Trak. His business helps stores learn about their customers. He says that traditional stores offer a social experience that some people enjoy.

Bill Martin says traditional stores can provide goods to buyers more quickly than online stores. And some retailers are using websites to persuade people to visit their stores.

While e-commerce worries some business owners, the only worry for delivery services like FedEx and UPS is keeping up with the number of packages. UPS manager Dana Kine says her company is very busy at this time of year. UPS is so busy that it has filled 56.000 temporary worker positions during the holiday season.

  • 27、   Most of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words.Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it wouldhinder (阻碍)our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone.Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message.Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words.

We don't always say what we mean or mean what we say.Sometimes our words don't mean anything except“I'm letting off some steam, so don't take it seriously.I don't really want you to pay close attention to what I'm saying.Just pay attention to what I'm feeling.”Mostly we mean several things at once.A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner,“This step has to be fixed before I'll buy.”The owner says,“It's been like that for years.”Actually, the step hasn't been like that for years, but the unspoken message is:“I don't want to fix it.We put up with it.Why can't you"The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it,when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said.

When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior.

We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words,“If sure has been nice to have you over,"can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically(例行公事地).The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.

1What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A. Words provide listeners with the most important information.

    B. Listeners can gain insight if they listen for words carefully.

    C. The comprehension of a message is influenced by a few factors.

    D. When messages are presented is of great importance.

2What does the underlined sentence“I'm letting off some steam”in Para.2 probably mean?

    A. I'm just kidding. B. I'm just calling your attention.

    C. I'm saying the opposite. D. I'm giving some important information.

3Why shouldn't people rely too much on words alone?

    A. Words are used to describe a big part of the many ideas.

    B. Words always successfully represent what we say.

    C. Listeners may not develop healthy relationships.

    D. Listeners will fail to understand the unspoken language.

4How does the author develop Para.3?

    A. By raising questions. B. By listing data.

    C. By giving examples. D. By analyzing causes and effects.

  • 28、The outbreak of locusts, an insect that mainly lives in Africa and Asia, is the worst experienced by Kenya in 70 years. The crowds are some three times the size of New York City, eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal grassland and destroying livelihoods in the process.

“These hungry things are alarming,” says Keith Cressman, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's senior locust forecasting officer. "A crowd the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined."

Desert locusts are infamous for their ability to breed(繁育)rapidly in large numbers every three months. And with some help from the wind, they can travel as much as 80 miles a day. Most years, the insects stay in African deserts. However, under the right environmental conditions, they can multiply quickly, spread as much as 400 times every six months and cause extensive destruction if left unchecked.

“The insect has the ability to take advantage of good conditions.” Cressman says.

The "good conditions" the scientist is referring to began in mid-2018 when a rainstorm from the Indian Ocean struck a remote area of the Arabian Peninsula known as the "Empty Quarter". Normally, it would dry out within a short period, killing most of the locust population, which depends on green plants for food. However, in late 2018, a second rainstorm struck the same region. The huge sandy area got wet, which is exactly what desert locusts need to lay their eggs and breed. The extra food supply caused the population to explode for the second time in six months.

Luckily, the locusts, experts say, are easy to control with chemicals. Kenya badly needs equipment and a steady supply of chemicals to effectively wipe out the massive insects. Hopefully, leaders worldwide will recognize the tough situation and contribute generously to control the locust outbreak.

【1】What can we infer from what Cressman says in paragraph 2?

    A.Little can dull locusts' appetite.

B.Urgent action must be taken against locusts.

C.Overpopulation in big cities leads to food shortages.

D.New York and California should meet challenges together.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Locusts' living conditions.

    B.Locusts' destructive effect.

    C.Locusts' daily travel distance.

    D.Locusts' super reproductive power.

【3】For what purpose does the author mention "good conditions"?

A.To explain immediate causes of the locust outbreak.

B.To remind locals to preserve the environment.

C.To analyze how to prevent locust outbreak.

D.To highlight the strength of two rainstorms.

  • 29、Shopping centers, stadiums and universities may soon have a new tool to help fight crime.

A California company called Knightscope says its robots can predict and prevent crime. Knightscope says the goal is to reduce crime by half in areas the robots guard.

William Santana Li is the chief executive officer of Knightscope. He says,"These robot security guards will change the world. Our planet has more than seven billion people on it. It's going to quickly get to nine billion people. The security equipment that we have globally is just not going to develop that fast. The company's Autonomous Data Machines can become the eyes and ears of law enforcement(执法)."

"You want them to be machines plus humans. Let. the machines do the heavy and sometimes dangerous work and let the humans do the strategic decision-making work,so it's always working all together."

The machines do not carry weapons but they have day and night video cameras which are able to turn 360 degrees and can also sense chemical and biological weapons.

Some people may become concerned about their privacy, especially in connection with the video recordings. Some people may worry that such recordings will appear on the Internet. Eugene Volokh, a law professor at the UCLA School of Law, says the machines have to be used in the right way and it will be interesting to see how state laws deal with this kind of video.

William Santana Li says there is a long waiting list for the robots in the US. Workers in the company are working overtime to meet the demands of the market. At least 25 other countries are also interested in these robot security guards.

【1】What can this new tool do for humans?

    A.Make strategic decisions.

    B.Keep watching day and night.

    C.Carry heavy weapons.

    D.Stop crime autonomously.

【2】Why are some people worried about the new robots?

A.Their privacy may be let out.

    B.The robots are very expensive.

    C.Robots will replace humans.

D.They will be out of work soon.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 1, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.

Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was 2 for the COVID-19 disease after 3 a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement.

All of the cats are expected to recover, it said. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after 4 to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.

Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger. "This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 5 we will all have a better understanding as a result.

While the other tigers and lions were also 6 symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and  had started to lose her appetite already, and they did not want to 7 all the cats to anesthesia(麻醉), Calle said.

Nadia 8 X-rays, an ultrasound(超声波) and blood tests to try to figure out what was making her sick . They decided to test for COVID-19 9 the surge in cases in New York City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States. The first tiger at the zoo, which has been shut since mid-March, began showing 10 of illness on March 27, according to the US Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Reading a book and watching a film are two very different experiences, but it’s normal to have high expectations when a film of a favourite book is made. There are very many times I have been disappointed by a film of a book I love. The films can be adapted from classic novels, short stories, comic books and stage plays, as well as non-fictions, even those written by ghostwriters. All can work well, but why do many adaptations fail with both cinema audiences and critics?

A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is. Since a typical film is only around two hours long, it becomes a question for the screenwriters to decide what to leave out and how to write the dialogue. Sometimes there may be changes to the plot, additions, and even different endings. I, like many people, have often left the cinema feeling “the film is not like the book”.

Another problem is the cast. Finding actors acceptable to film audiences can mean the difference between success and failure. Readers have their imaginations about how characters look and sound. This is where I think many film adaptations fall down.

Some books are just too difficult to film for technical reasons, although movies like The Life of Pi are very successful. CGI (Computer Generated Image) technology has had a huge impact on the movie industry. It allowed the previously unfilmable to become a reality.

One may think that it is the book writer who is in the best position to do film adaptations. In fact, this can actually be a bad thing because they may be too close to the material and find it difficult to adapt. Also, some writers have been very unsatisfied with the film versions of their work. Roald Dahl and Stephen King are examples of this. For me, anyway, it is always a bad idea to watch a film of a book you love.
