二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Light in a bottle

This is such a simple idea! It’s a special lamp that needs and costs nothing to run. It wasn’t invented by a famous scientist, but by a man called Alfredo Moser in Brazil sixteen years ago. In his hometown at the time, they had problems with electricity. 【1】 One day, Moser and his friends were talking about how they could create a signal in an emergency. One of them suggested using a bottle to reflect the light from the sun. This made Moser think.   【2】

All you need is a clean plastic bottle. Fill it with water and close it with a black top. The black top attracts the sun. A drop of bleach (漂白剂), the kind you use to clean the house, is added to the water to keep it clean. Then a small hole is cut in the roof of the room where you want the light, and the bottle is pushed through the hole. 【3】 It’s much stronger than the light from a candle!

Moser shared his idea with his neighbours and his light bottles were fixed in the local supermarket. Ten years later, the MyShelter Foundation in the Philippines heard about Moser’s idea. 【4】 Now there are Moser lamps in more than 140,000 homes throughout the Philippines and the idea has spread to a number of other countries, too. 【5】 Moser lamps have surely made life easier for a lot of people!

A.Why not use water to make light?

B.In India, the bottles are used in countryside schools.

C.Moser was very good at making things around the home.

D.People’s homes and small businesses were often left in the dark.

E.Following Moser’s method, the organization started making lamps in 2011.

F.While there’s sunlight outside, the light will be carried through the water into the room below.

G.MyShelter also offers training for people who want to earn money by fixing the lamps in their communities.

  • 27、What makes sports fun?

What makes organized sports fun for kids? A group at George Washington University (GW), led by Professor Amanda J. Visek, has been studying this question. The research is important because lots of kids give up playing sports around age 13 or 14.

The reason kids quit? 1 So if the group can figure out what makes sports fun, maybe more kids will play longer and develop better lifelong exercise habits.

First, the group brainstormed 81 things called "fun determinants" that can make sports fun. Then they asked the players aged 8 to 18 to assess how important each thing was to their enjoyment of playing organized sports. 2 The players ranked(排名) “winning” as only the 40th most important fun determinant. Unexpectedly, they ranked "trying your best," "exercising and being active" and “getting along with your teammates" in the top 10 most important fun determinants.

3 They also compared younger athletes with older athletes as well as recreational athletes and kids who play on travel teams. The recent study revealed (揭露) more surprises. Some people think girls like sports because they want to be with their friends, while boys like to compete. 4 It's true boys placed slightly more importance on "improving athletic skills to play at the next level," but for the most part, the study found male and female athletes’ answers were very close. 5 Although there were some differences between the groups -younger players, for example, like "playing different positions" more than older players-the groups shared lots of the same attitudes toward what makes sports fun.

    A.The result was surprising

B.They say sports aren't fun anymore.

C.Boys and girls react differently toward sports.

D.Different groups have different opinions on fun determinants.

E.The group compared males' and females' attitudes on what makes sports fun.

F.The study, however, showed girls' and boys’ attitudes were more alike than different.

G.The same was true for younger and older players as well as recreational and travel athletes.

  • 28、   It is hard, it hurts —and yet more than two million of us in the UK run at least once a week.

Of course, some people run to lose weight, or to get fit, and these are great reasons. Running is also easy to do, it's cheap, and you can do it when you want. All these factors certainly contribute to the fact that running is one of the most popular sports in the UK.

But for many of those two million runners, the real reason we head out to beat the roads until our legs hurt is more intangible (无形的) than weight loss or fitness.

Many runners become interested in times. They try to break the 40-minute barrier for the 10K, or run under four hours for the marathon. Yet, really, these times are almost meaningless. And as soon as they are achieved, another target is thrown out almost immediately.

The times are only the carrots we put in front of ourselves. But why do we put them there in the first place? Nobody ever gives a wise answer Deep down, we all know the answer.

Running brings us joy. Watch small children when they are excited, at play, and mostly they can't stop running. There's a great moment in The Catcher in the Rye when Holden Caulfield, caught in the uneasy space between childhood and adulthood, is walking across his school grounds one evening and he suddenly starts to run. “I don't ever know what I was running for---I guess I just felt like it,” he says.

This will to run is born. In fact, humans may well have evolved (进化) the way we did because of our ability to run. As children, and even adolescents, we can respond to this natural call to run whenever the feeling takes us.As we run, we begin to sense that childish joy, which is born to live a wilder existence. As we run, the layers of responsibility and identity we have gathered in our lives, father, mother, lawyer, teacher, all fall away, leaving us with the raw human being.

If we push on, running harder, deeper into the loneliness, further away from the world and the structure of our lives, we begin to feel strangely excited, separated yet a the same time connected, to ourselves. With nothing but our own two legs moving us, we begin 1o get a sense of who, or what, we really are. After a long run, everything seems right in the world. Everything is at peace. To experience this is a powerful feeling, strong enough to have us coming back, again and again, for more.

1Why does the author think setting time goals is almost meaningless?

A.Because those time goals can' be achieved.

B.Because those time goals can be achieved easily

C.Because people will be very proud once the time goals are achieved.

D.Because there will always be a new time goal once the former one is achieved.

2Which of the following words can best describe the author's attitude towards running?

    A.Uncertain. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Puzzled.

3What does the underlined word "this “in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.breaking the 40 -minute barrier for the 10K.

B.running under four hours for the Marathon.

C.feeling separated from the world after running

D.feeling everything is right after a long run.

4What may be the best tile of this passage?

A.Running to Keep Fit B.Running to Break Records

C.Running to Be the Real You D.Running to Become an Adult

  • 29、   Olympiads(奥林匹克竞赛)are a kind of competitive exam to tap exceptional students with the best of potential, talent, and IQ.These exams are conducted to challenge and motivate the brightest students from around the world and to urge more and more children to take up a career in pure science. But why do most parents nowadays want their children to participate in Olympiads?

Participating in and winning any kind of competition is one of the best feelings in the world.Competitions award merit(优点),performance, excellence—quite literally, the best in a human being. Thus,it might be understandable that:a lot of pride is associated with a child qualifying at any of the Olympiad levels.Who doesn’t want to be the proud parent of a smart, intelligent young child?

It has also been claimed that Olympiads can act as a great morale booster(信心增强剂).Bangalore-based programmer of Olympiad Helper,Vikash Anil says,“Even when students don’t win, their confidence grows.”

However, there are a number of serious considerations parents are missing out on,which has impacts on children. They are being burdened with the pressure of performing well in these exams—a pressure that is often too high and unhealthy for their young minds and bodies. They are also being introduced to peer pressure and“competition”in a very negative and ugly light.

What’s worse, the age at which children are being forced to take these exams keep dropping with each passing year.Children as young as 5 or 6 years old are being sent away to tuitions(辅导)right after school gets over. Many educationists are condemning this, because the International Science Olympiads is for high school students only.

The claim that Olympiads actually make children“more confident”cannot be readily accepted. While a lot of good outcomes are possible from Olympiads,it is also true that all students will not react positively to“failing”at Olympiads.More students are going to come out feeling miserable for having failed the exam.

Being a parent in today’s dynamic, commercial and material world is not easy.It is indeed a pity if parents are chasing“recognition”,rather than“excellence”and“merit”for their children. There is no such thing as a“good”,or a“poor”child.Parents should realize this, embrace this, and empower themselves and their children with this.

As a parting thought I would like to leave this Einstein quote:“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

1Why do most parents want their children to participate in Olympiads?

A.To prove their children’s potential and excellence.

B.To prepare their children for a pure science career.

C.To strengthen their children’s competitive awareness.

D.To make their children benefit from stress and failures.

2What is the author’s attitude to Vikash Anil’s words?

    A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Disapproving. D.Uninterested.

3Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Olympiads:Are Children Relying on Tuitions Too Much

B.Olympiads:Are Children Starting at a Too Young Age

C.Olympiads:Are Parents Being Driven by Commercials

    D.Olympiads:Are Parents Becoming Over-Ambitious

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
