26、   A big challenge facing children who are seriously ill is keeping up with schoolwork. One mom’s high-tech solution: having kids being treated in hospital attend classes via robots (the robot’s screen displays a live video to feed the child’s need), allowing them to almost join in discussions, go on field trips, and generally feel connected.

After Leslie Morissette lost her son, Graham, to cancer of the blood in 1997, she honored him by founding Grahamtastic Connection, a non-profit organization that provides free electronic equipment for other sick kids. Since its foundation she’s helped over 1,600 kids. “He was really into communication and keeping in touch, always asking the doctors and nurses for their e-mail addresses,” she says.

Though Leslie was an art director for 12 years and ran Grahamtastic Connection on the side, she now puts her mind into her organization full-time. Offering sick children free technology ―whether it’s a robot, an iPad, a laptop, or Internet access ―helps first and best with education.

“When a child is in hospital, parents want to do anything to allow him or her some normalcy (常态),” she says. “We connect kids to their normal world when it’s out of reach.” Some kids who have missed an entire school year can now go by robot and actually pass onto the next grade level without stepping foot inside the building. The equally important thing, though, is the social connection. “It stops the feeling of loneliness not just from the classroom, but from friends and family too,” she adds.

27、   Disease spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves?

Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they’ve developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.

The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.

Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming(“Simon”）Wong. He and schoolmate Kin Pong ( Michael ) Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.

After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide(二氧化钛）is known to kill bacteria. It’s already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.

Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet(紫外线的）light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.

To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass, Each end fits into a bracket (托架).Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light.

And here’s the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.

The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about $13 (about 81 yuan) to build.

29、“Does my smile look big in this?” Future fitting-room mirrors in clothing stores could subtly adjust your reflection to make you look--and hence feel--happier encouraging you to like what you see.

That’s the idea behind the Emotion Evoking System developed by Shigeo Yoshida and colleagues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The system can manipulate, or in other words, control your emotions and personal preferences by presenting you with an image of your own smiling or frowning face.

The principle that physiological changes can drive emotional ones that laughter comes before happiness, rather than the other way around- is a well-established idea.

The researchers wanted to see if this idea could be used to build a computer system that manipulates how you feel. The system works by presenting the user with a web-camera image of his or her face as if they were looking in a mirror. The image is then subtly altered with-software, turning the corners of the mouth up or down and changing the area around the eyes, so that the person appears to smile or frown.

Without telling them the aim of the study, the team recruited(招募)21 volunteers and asked them to sit in front of the screen while performing an unrelated task. When the task was completed, the participants rated how they felt. When the faces on screen appeared to smile, people reported that they felt happier. On the other hand, when the image was given a sad expression, they reported feeling less happy.

Yoshida and his colleagues tested whether manipulating the volunteers emotional state would influence their preferences. Each person was given a scarf to wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The volunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were more likely to report that they liked it, and those that saw themselves not smiling were less likely.

“The system could be used to manipulate consumers’ impressions of products,” say the researchers. For example, mirrors in clothing-store fitting rooms could be replaced with screens showing altered reflections. They also suggest people may be more likely to find clothes attractive if they see themselves looking happy while trying them on.

“It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University of Birmingham, UK. But he notes that using such technology in a shop would be harder than in the lab, because people will use a wide range of expressions. “Attempting to make slight differences to these and ensuring that the reflected image looks believable would be much more challenging,” he says.

Of course, there are also important moral questions surrounding such subtly manipulative technology. “You could argue that if it makes people happy, what harm is it doing?” says Creed. “But I can imagine that many people may feel manipulated uncomfortable and cheated if they found out.”

Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 【1】 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

The Queen’s speech was once a highlight of Christmas Day. However, according to a mathematical analysis of the festive messages, the speech is now one of the most repetitive and predictable television events. Of the 42,000 words the Queen has used, only 3,991 are distinct words which have never been repeated.

“Since she came to the throne (王位) in 1952, the Queen has given 63 Christmas broadcasts, only failing to appear once in 1969 when she issued a written message,” said Hannah Fry, a mathematician at University College London. “She could have said a lot in that time, but if you analyze the text, she has actually said very little and often repeated herself.”

Fry and his UCL colleague Thomas Léron Evans analyzed the speeches in the hope of “finding out what Christmas really means to Her Majesty (女王殿下).” Ignoring common words such as “the” and “of, ” they focused instead on nouns and phrases, looking at how often they were repeated. Almost predictably, they discovered that the Queen’s Christmas vocabulary was dominated by words such as “Commonwealth (英联邦),” “peoples,” “families” and “children,” and phrased such as “shining example,” “weak and innocent” and “tragic situation.”

“There are words about time, about society and some religious words… all very good and noble, of course, but also a bit dull and repetitive,” said Fry.

One clear tread the two mathematicians found in the Christmas messages was an increase in references to religion over the recent years. Jesus was hardly mentioned in the 1950s. From then to 1973, there was almost no reference to Christianity or religion. However, in recent years, religion has appeared frequently, peaking at 20 mentions 2000, with another dozen in 2011 and between five and ten mentions in most other recent years.

Fry and Evans have also designed a computer program that can take the Queen’s favorite words and phrases, and turn them back into a ready-made (现成的) speech.
