二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Judging from recent surveys, most experts in sleep behaviour agree that there is virtually an epidemic (流行病) of sleepiness in the nation. “I can’t think of a single study that hasn’t found Americans getting less sleep than they ought to,” says Dr. David. Even people who think they are sleeping enough would probably be better off with more rest.

The beginning of our sleep-deficit (睡眠不足) crisis can be traced to the invention of the light bulb a century ago. From diary entries and other personal accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have reached the conclusion that the average person used to sleep about 9.5 hours a night. “The best sleep habits once were forced on us, when we had nothing to do in the evening down on the farm, and it was dark.” By the 1950s and 1960s, that sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically, to between 7.5 and 8 hours, and most people had to wake to an alarm clock. “People cheat on their sleep, and they don’t even realise they’re doing it,” says Dr. David. “They think they’re okay because they can get by on 6.5 hours, when they really need 7.5, 8 or even more to feel ideally vigorous.”

Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researchers say, is the complexity of the day. Whenever pressures from work, family, friends and community mount, many people consider sleep the least expensive item on his programme. In our society, you’re considered dynamic if you say you only need 5.5 hours’ sleep. If you’ve got to get 8.5 hours, people think you lack drive and ambition.

To determine the consequences of sleep deficit, researchers have put subjects through a set of psychological and performance tests requiring them, for instance, to add columns of numbers or recall a passage read to them only minutes earlier. “We’ve found that if you’re in sleep deficit, performance suffers,” says Dr. David. “Short-term memory is weakened, as are abilities to make decisions and to concentrate.”

【1】People in the 18th and 19th centuries used to sleep about 9.5 hours a night because they had _________.

    A.no drive and ambition

    B.no electric lighting

    C.the best sleep habits

D.nothing to do in the evening

【2】According to Dr. David, Americans _________.

A.are ideally vigorous even under the pressure of life

B.often neglect the consequences of sleep deficit

C.do not know how to relax themselves properly

D.can get by on 6.5 hours of sleep

    【3】Many Americans believe that _________.

A.sleep is the first thing that can be sacrificed when one is busy

B.they need more sleep to cope with the complexities of everyday life

C.to sleep is something one can do at any time of the day

D.enough sleep promotes people’s drive and ambition

【4】The underlined word “subjects” in Paragraph 4 refers to _________.

A.the performance tests used in the study of sleep deficit

B.special branches of knowledge that are being studied

C.people whose behaviour or reactions are being studied

D.the psychological consequences of sleep deficit

  • 27、   In recent years, the leaders and islanders of many small-island nations have warned that climate change is an existential threat to their homelands, fearing they could disappear under rising seas as the planet warms. But according to the latest research, small, low-lying islands dotted around the Pacific and the Caribbean—often seen as the places most vulnerable to global warming—can naturally adapt and raise themselves above disturbing waves.

A three-year study led by Britain’s University of Plymouth, which looked at coral reef islands such as the Maldives, found that tides move sediment (沉积物) to create higher altitude, a process that may keep islands habitable. These islands were formed hundreds of thousands of years ago by waves moving and piling up reef material or sediment to create higher ground—a natural defence mechanism that continues.

Low-lying island states are judged to be at greatest risk from increasingly powerful storms and rising oceans, with some making preparations to resettle their people within decades. Many are already building sea walls, appealing for international aid or setting up projects to repair damage caused by climate change impacts. The world’s tens of thousands of coral reef islands are mostly uninhabited, but are home to about one million people who largely rely on fishing or tourism for a living.

Scientists built a model coral reef and island in a laboratory tank with rising water levels and used computer models to reproduce how such islands respond to higher seas in reality. The results suggest that by choosing climate-adaptable infrastructure (基础设施) that allows for occasional flooding, like building on stilts (桩子) and movable houses, islanders with enough space could adapt to their shifting environment. Sea walls, however, are compromising the natural ability of the islands to adjust to rising sea levels. “If you stop the flooding of the islands, you also stop the movement of the sediment on top of the island,” said lead author Gred Masselink, professor of coastal geography at the University of Plymouth.

1What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Unnoticeable. B.Beneficial.

    C.Significant. D.Sensitive.

2What do we learn from the three-year study?

A.Piling-up sediment creates a natural defence for small islands.

B.Disturbing waves keep the islands unlivable.

C.A computer model is used to provide more space for islanders.

D.Sea walls prevent the disappearance of small islands.

3Which word best describes low-lying island states’ attitude to rising seas?

    A.Casual. B.Joyful.

    C.Unconcerned. D.Defensive.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Small Islands May Not Disappear Under Rising Sea.

B.Climate Change Poses Threats to Small Islands.

C.The Climate-adaptable Infrastructures of Small Islands.

D.The Perfect Solution to Rising Seas for Small Islands.

  • 28、   You know that thrill you get when listening to your favorite music or that exciting feeling down your spine (脊柱) when you hear your favorite melody or rhythm? According to a recent study, it seems the same thing can happen while you are reading, but not with every kind of text. This opens up fascinating questions around how music, reading and emotions are connected in the brain.

“We decided we would do a comparison between four or five different kinds of texts to see how the brain responded,” explains Professor Adam Zeman, a neurologist. “The participants lay in an MRI scanner reading the texts, and then we compared brain activity for those five texts.” The texts ranged from deadly boring ones to highly exciting ones, including the Highway Code, passages from novels and poems.

As the researchers observed, participants found some texts more emotional than others. When they read these emotional texts, there was higher activity in brain areas associated with pleasure and reward — the same areas related to the thrill we get when we listen to music. As Zeman says, “It was a nice proof that the emotional response to literature and to music has quite a bit in common.”

When the participants were reading poems, the team found there was more activity in a particular group of brain areas called the Default Network. "These areas seem to be associated with things we do with our minds when we are resting, like thinking about what's happened to us recently, thinking about what’s going to happen in the near future, about other people, and that network seems to be more strongly associated with poetry than with prose” explains Zeman. The study shows that the different texts activate different areas of our brains when we read.

1What can we know from the study?

A.People may feel excited when reading poems. B.People aren’t thrilled when listening to music.

C.Music gives participants more pleasure than text. D.Deadly boring texts never excite the brain.

2What is the purpose of the comparison between different kinds of texts?

A.To thrill the participants. B.To scan the participants’ brain.

C.To check the response of human's brain. D.To teach the participants novels and poems.

3What happened in the participants’ brains when they were reading?

    A.Their brains preferred music.

B.Brain areas related to pleasure became more active.

C.Their emotional response to literature stopped.

D.Their brains were less emotional when reading the emotional text.

4Where is the text probably from?

A.A science magazine. B.A film review.

    C.An advertisement. D.A science fiction.

  • 29、This new packaging material looks like conventional plastic, but it's actually made from fish waste and algae(海藻)--and unlike plastic, if it escapes into the ocean, a fish could likely eat it safely. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year's James Dyson Award.

"It began with my desire to work with waste," says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and find new ways to use it. She focused on fish skins and scales (鳞片). "When I had it in my hands, I realized this has got potential, she says. "It's super strong and flexible." Hughes spent months experimenting with fish waste in her kitchen, running more than 100 experiments to find a binder and a process that could hold together the proteins in the fish skins and scales. "I had a lot of failed attempts—a lot of things either were too easily broken or too soft or easily went bad," she says. She finally landed on a type of algae that can be locally got.

The material can be used to replace oil-based plastic in packaging such as bags or the half transparent windows used to show products in boxes. As her research continues, Hughes says that she'll be studying how MarinaTex works and how long it could be used to store food.

Unlike some "compostable" plastics, which need to be processed in an industrial composting facility to break down, the new material can break down in four to six weeks in a backyard compost bin. 'All the ingredients are food-grade safe," Hughes says." So, this breaks down much like a piece of food would break down."

    【1】Why did Hughes develop MarinaTex?

A.She wanted to look for a new plastic.

B.She would like fish to eat it safely.

C.She wanted to win James Dyson Award.

D.She wanted to make use of fish skins and scales.

【2】What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The fish processing factory.

    B.The fish waste.

    C.Fish scales.

    D.Fish skins.

【3】What is the main advantage of MarinaTex compared with conventional plastic?

A.It is stronger and more flexible.

B.It can be used as plastic bags.

C.It has the nutritional value for fish.

D.It can break down very easily and fast.

【4】Which one is the best title for the passage?

    A.Working with Waste

    B.Developing New Ideas

    C.Making Bags from Fish Waste

    D.Getting Rid of Plastic Pollution

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Picture this: After saving up your money, you finally have enough to buy that toy, game, or piece of clothing you've been dreaming of. You go to the store and find the item. But at the counter, you see a sign: "Hello! We've gone cashless(不用现金)."

Situations like this may become common if more stores and restaurants stop accepting cash as a payment. Instead, customers must pay with a credit card, or by smartphone app. Many business owners believe that getting rid of cash has benefited the way their business run. Staff members don't have to worry about having enough money to make change or about delivering bills and coins to the bank.

But a growing number of people think that cashless stores are unfair. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, more than 8 million households in the US don't have bank accounts. Also, many people, including kids, don't meet the requirements for a credit card. "A cashless economy(经济)is not an inclusive(包容广阔的)economy," Tazra Mitchell told National Public Radio. She's a policy director at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute. In her opinion, cashless stores are "essentially discriminating (歧视)against people". Plus, people who do have credit cards might prefer paying with cash. "Cash is still very popular with consumers," Nick Bourke said. He's a director at the Pew Charitable Trusts' consumer finance project. "It's used by almost eight in ten adults in the US every month. That's more than any other payment type."

Lawmakers in several places have taken steps to ban cashless stores. A handful of major cities including New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have already passed laws to solve the issue. In San Francisco, California, a law banning cashless stores was passed in May. It says most stores in the city must allow customers to pay with cash. Cerek REmski helped write the San Francisco law. He works for the city. "It's really about equity(公平)," Remski said. "It's about understanding that not everyone has equal access to things."
